To think this is a very privileged view on life

Saw this shared on social media today and my immediate thought was “aye, tell that to the women being raped to death by the Iranian national guard.”

am I a miserable cow, or does this represent an incredibly privileged and narrow experience of life? Is it unbearably trite?

To think this is a very privileged view on life

I mean, it’s twee, but it’s hardly
offensive.

MarieRoseMarie · 15/02/2023 10:20

I mean 90% of the complaints on mumsnet would sound pretty stupid to women being raped by the Iranian National guard so…

MaryMcCarthy · 15/02/2023 10:21

I've got chronic health problems and mental health issues but hey, at least I'm not being raped by the Iranian guard. Thanks for putting things into perspective OP.

FiveShelties · 15/02/2023 10:22

So are people only allowed to post about the very worst things that could happen.

harrassedmumto3 · 15/02/2023 10:26

I mean, it's crappy, but you're being a miserable cow (you did ask!) Wink

squashyhat · 15/02/2023 10:27

If you live your life by social media memes you are away with the fairies anyway 🤷‍♀️

HermioneWeasley · 15/02/2023 10:28

@MaryMcCarthy do you find sentiments like this helpful? Im very happy to be wrong if this does help people with genuine problems.

Idkrealorfake · 15/02/2023 10:28

The kiddie font is the most offensive thing about this. While it is twee in its expression, the sentiment is "don't give up hope" and "don't give in" which is probably quite useful for anyone being tortured by their oppressors.

HermioneWeasley · 15/02/2023 10:29

@harrassedmumto3 i did ask!

OP posts:
Merlott · 15/02/2023 10:29

The target audience for that sort of "motivation" isn't people with significant issues though is it?

If you don't find it helpful block and scroll on 🤷‍♀️

Squiblet · 15/02/2023 10:29

Use it to remind yourself how happy you are that you are not being, and never will be, "spiritually life coached" by Julia.

WandaWonder · 15/02/2023 10:31

Maybe you are following the wrong people

Maybe follow the people that have had the most serious things happen to them instead if that makes you feel better

Sure I don't get the tweeness but far out if that is the worse thing they post

HermioneWeasley · 15/02/2023 10:31

@Merlott i think that’s my objection. (Subject to what a PP says in response to me question), if your problems can be solved by this then they aren’t significant in the first place.

@Squiblet well quite. I shall give gratitude for that every day!

Personally no, but I know numerous people who seem to live their lives by twee memes. Whatever works for you I guess.

Dotcheck · 15/02/2023 10:33

There’s a strong possibility you are overthinking this.

WhatNoRaisins · 15/02/2023 10:33

It's when people claim that happiness comes from within oneself or that it's a choice and has nothing to do with ones circumstances that bothers me. Maybe with that logic these Iranian women need to buck their ideas up and look within to find happiness.

BYOFARTSdotCOdotUK · 15/02/2023 10:33

It's not meant to solve problems, it's meant to lift your spirits

😂I now feel very uplifted!

^^ This
I'm sure that there will be accounts out there that are more serious in nature.
I use SM for first world things like keeping in contact with people and recipe inspiration and I'm not going to apologise for that

bbgx · 15/02/2023 10:37

The sentiment is fine. The font is a bit patronising. Some people will like it though.

WinterFoxes · 15/02/2023 10:37

It's not intended to lift people up from rare trauma. It's intended to keep us on an even keel in daily life. Surely that's obvious?

Toadallyinlove · 15/02/2023 10:37

It's very twee, it makes me yawn.

It's all a bit Amanda from Motherland #yummymummy #bossbabe etc

Otoh: you are totally overthinking it

FrustatedAgain · 15/02/2023 10:37

It's just supposed to be trying to spread a little positivity, and you are just trying to spread a little negativity!

bingoitsadingo · 15/02/2023 10:38

Eh I think its a personality thing as to whether this stuff is helpful to you or not, and its not really related to how "serious" your problems are.

I've led a pretty priveleged life and I find it to be twee nonsense. But I have friends dealing with far more difficult things than me who love this kind of stuff. Each to their own!

bbgx · 15/02/2023 10:38

Yeah, trying living in solitary confinement and see how much happiness from within you find. Happiness comes from people/things around us
