To think this is a very privileged view on life

Saw this shared on social media today and my immediate thought was “aye, tell that to the women being raped to death by the Iranian national guard.”

am I a miserable cow, or does this represent an incredibly privileged and narrow experience of life? Is it unbearably trite?

To think this is a very privileged view on life

I wouldn't say privileged, but I think 'twee' is the right word.

RestingMurderousFace · 15/02/2023 11:51

It’s the pastels for me.

It depends on your situation. ‘This too shall pass’ is a nice sentiment when anxious and stressed about something. ‘There’s always hope. Everything’s solvable’ goes down like a dose of the shits when you have an incurable chronic health condition.

None of it says "everything 's solvable".
The message is, you don't have to solve everything; just face it and move on.
Find your way to get round it, past it, over it and survive.

aSofaNearYou · 15/02/2023 11:57

i think that’s my objection. (Subject to what a PP says in response to me question), if your problems can be solved by this then they aren’t significant in the first place.

Why do they need to be extremely significant? These sorts of sentiments seem like they could be useful for someone with problems on the sort of level of going through a bad breakup, struggling to find a job etc.

Do you really view those sorts of things as so very insignificant that a person shouldn't even be thinking about them or mentioning them, even just to share or enjoy a few words of encouragement?

Alexandernevermind · 15/02/2023 11:58

I always think that the people who share this sort of thing aren't necessarily trying to help other people by sharing it, but it's something they have found helpful for themselves. It's a bit like writing "you are brave" on a banana skin with a Sharpee. The only exception is the MLM "mumboss" who constantly shares crap like this, along with # blessed 🤮. I don't think anyone is sharing it to help a woman experiencing the extreme scenario in the op.

There are many examples I used to read when I was in the worst place I have been that would say or infer there was ‘always hope. Nothing was insurmountable’. I can remember those messages were particularly difficult as I’d been diagnosed with a chronic, incurable health condition that had torn down everything important to me and left me suicidal.

Im not sure what the right message is but it definitely was t the ones I was seeing.

The target audience for that sort of "motivation" isn't people with significant issues though is it?

If you don't find it helpful block and scroll on 🤷‍♀️

Agreed. It is basically for people just dealing with everyday life. It is why it always makes me want to go - oh just fuck off.

ExistenceOptional · 15/02/2023 12:17

Some things are insurmountable. Some things really are shit.

Butchyrestingface · 15/02/2023 12:20

I find these pronouncements to be twee, nauseating shite. However, unless OP is herself an Iranian being raped by the National Guard, it's beyond bizarre that this is where her mind jumped to upon reading this. Confused

Usually, my mind just does a very non-specific 🤮🤯😵😵‍💫

reddwarfgeek · 15/02/2023 12:36

I didn't think privileged when I saw that, it's just a bit naive nauseating .

Ceryneianhind · 15/02/2023 12:40

MarieRoseMarie · 15/02/2023 10:20

I mean 90% of the complaints on mumsnet would sound pretty stupid to women being raped by the Iranian National guard so…

Yeah, my DH is cheating on me with the au pair, my house is falling down around me, I've been fired from my job because my long term illness makes it hard for me to go to the office, which is 3.5 hours away by public transport and my car will cost 25k to repair, but hey, at least i am not being raped by the Iranian National guard so.....

(obviously in italics is all made up)

bussteward · 15/02/2023 12:43

I mean it’s twee and stupid but just unfollow? And ideally our bar for whether our lives are going OK should be higher than merely “not getting raped by the Iranian national guard”. That’s sort of a minimum.

chartreuseabuse · 15/02/2023 12:47

Why are you complaining about a meme when women are being raped to death by the Iranian national guards?

WonderingWanda · 15/02/2023 12:57

Those sort of positive affirmations aren't really aimed at the women being raped by the Iranian Nattional Guard though are they? That's not what it means by a hard day. A hard day might be the kids were grumpier than normal, work was busier than normal, it rained on your washing and the cat vomited on the carpet and so on. So, yes it's aimed at the privileged. They are twee and a bit cringy when you see people posting them know social media but it's never a bad thing to remember that most of us are incredibly privileged and not living in deep poverty or persecution like so many in the world.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 15/02/2023 13:03

Never pay any attention to material written in faux-childish-handwriting font.

icelolly12 · 15/02/2023 13:16

I'd hazard a guess that these hard days refer to times when we're feeling a bit down in the dumps and sorry for ourselves rather than being raped. There's far worse things to get offended about in life. YABU

Bubblebubblebah · 15/02/2023 13:20

Is this the new "stop moaning about the food, kids in x are starving and would be very grateful for that"?

BellePeppa · 15/02/2023 15:03

I’ve never been a fan of empty platitudes and ‘motivational’ slogans but there has been the occasional one that has resonated with me so I can’t completely diss them.
