Rihanna's pregnancy on the news

ImAvingOops · 13/02/2023 13:55

Aibu to think that this has no place on national news?
Currently watching ITV news and they've just done a piece on Rihanna at the Super Bowl, during which they showed no actual footage of her performance (only photographs) and said she's revealed her pregnancy.

I have nothing against Rihanna, on a personal level I'm pleased for her. ^But, what is the point of reporting on a performance without actually showing any of said performance and why is a singer's pregnancy on national news in Britain?

It's not like there's nothing else going on so they need to fill time with this vacuous shit. That's what tabloids are for!^

@Dijoduo you're taking her comment way too seriously🤣🤣

I don't think three letters warranted a two paragraph response, it was a fairly generic reply. Unless you're a big Rihanna fan, no, she's not a queen just for existing while pregnant. She gets paid millions to do that. If I did, I'd turn up on stage too.

Exactly this. She's no hero by any means for just dancing on stage for loads of money, but media like hyperbola, calling someone queen etc.

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 12:34

@CountryMusicHottie Grin

I am worried about how dumbed down everything seems to be getting. People banging on about Strictly Come Dancing or S Club reforming etc, like it's actually important! I don't really mind that entertainment shows talk about trivial shit all day long but the news really shouldn't.

Yes they did.

“I could barely get out of bed at 3 months pregnant.”
“LOL at this. Most women work, exercise, look after kids etc. in first trimester”

That was the statement and that was the response. What was said was said and the thread has gone from saying what she said isn’t nasty to trying to pretend it was never said at all.

Read it again, before you jump to any conclusions. LOL wasn't at post that woman couldn't get out of bed. LOL was at calling Rihanna queen for doing her work, like many many women do while pregnant. And stop being so worked up, you're being ridiculous.

I just don't think it's news. It's a personal event that millions of women do every day - Im happy for Rihanna on a personal level but I just don't think national news is the right place for celebrity pregnancy announcements. And I find it a bit jarring having vacuous stories tacked on to the end of the news or headlines going across the bottom of the screen when the news has been reporting on massive suffering and loss of life.

The news has always ended on a more lighthearted story though- be it celebrity based or community/animal related.
I cannot get worked up.

On Rihanna, i thought her performance was utterly dull as she could barely move.

No she wasn't. She was LOL at Rhianna being called a Queen because she pranced around on stage for a few minutes.

@CountryMusicHottie 🤣

Jesus Christ, calm down 😂What does your pregnancy have to do with post I replied to and Rihanna's pregnancy? But yeah, good for you, you let it all out, I think that was the aim, right?

Tbf, you were clearly intending to be insulting, you just thought you were insulting someone who wouldn’t read it (Rihanna) and ended up accidentally insulting women who were sick in pregnancy.

Another one... Sorry Rihanna, I don't think you're queen for dancing for few minutes while 3 months pregnant

The half time super bowl performance is never repeated, it's only broadcast live during half time and isn't shown again even by the networks that showed the game and can show the highlights!

I've watched Prince loads of times. Or am I missing the point?

RecoIIectionsMayVary · 14/02/2023 12:39

Big LOL at the dumbing down, lack of comprehension is evident.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 14/02/2023 12:39

mastertomsmum · 13/02/2023 22:56

They probably didn’t have rights to play the footage.

the baby thing is news cos the gap between the kids is very small

I thought I imagined that she’s just had a baby! That is a very small gap isn’t it!

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 12:41

Maybe it's time the lighthearted story was dropped. But okay on a day when the news is just talking about HS2 or a budget or something, but it feels crass on a programme reporting on mass death.

They weren’t responding the opinion about Rihanna. They were responding to the inadvertent bitchiness to a large group of women, that Rihanna is just one member of.

You don’t have to agree she’s a queen. I thought Beyoncé was supposed to be the queen anyway? The point is that an opinion about Rihanna can be expressed without being insulting to posters on here (and a large number of women in general).

"I thought Beyoncé was supposed to be the queen anyway?"

Why do we have to call singers queens anyway?

I don’t think I’ve ever personally called one a queen. I just thought it was Beyoncé’s “title”, not Rihanna’s. Fully prepared to be wrong on that.

Regardless, PP said something that was, at best, insensitive and dismissive and, at worst, incredibly insulting and hurtful. Even giving her the full benefit of the doubt, her intention was to be rude about a pregnant woman who hasn’t (to my knowledge) done anything wrong. Even if we gave her absolutely all the benefit of absolutely any doubt we could find, it was a comment that shouldn’t be defended. It was nasty to any reasonable inspection.

DaddyPiglet · 14/02/2023 13:03

If you're offended by PP laughing at your opinion on Rihanna - and then make it about yourself to win an argument- it might be time to have a day off. She said nothing offensive. Have also been very sick, why would you think she is laughing at morning sicknessConfused

I had morning sickness too, it's just crazy how they jumped to this nonsense conclusion. I laughed at calling Rihanna queen. I'm bit fed up with this conversation, because they're just deaf to any arguments. I would probably drop it in real life at this point too. It's just me, me, me, my sickness, I'm feeling offended and now Rihanna feels insulted.

mastertomsmum · 14/02/2023 13:10

Just to say I didn’t express an opinion on Rihanna being pregnant again quite quickly after her last pregnancy, I just think that’s one reason it’s made the news.

TitoMojito · 14/02/2023 13:16

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 08:12

To me it doesn't matter how cool Rihanna is or how well/badly the performance went - it still has no place on national news. Especially not in a week when there are thousands of people buried under buildings in Turkey and Syria, people are dying in wars etc. Totally crass to put that in the same programme, as if a celebrity's pregnancy news is on a par with these other events

Maybe it was supposed to be a happier story to offset all the sadness.

You’re actually not doing yourself any favours at this point. I think most people assumed you didn’t intend to cause offence but it’s becoming increasingly clear that it was your intention after all.

My intention was to state the obvious that women aren't called queens for dealing with every day life (maybe they should? Why don't we call nurses/paramedics/teachers queens while they work in first trimester?) The post I laughed at was ridiculous, if you feel it's offensive, not my problem.

thecatsthecats · 14/02/2023 13:35

Eh, I quite like Rihanna.

A domestic abuse victim who doesn't allow herself to be defined as such. Creatively daring in her music, not worrying about it being mainstream. Creator of a genuinely inclusive brand that has a very wide view of beauty.

I think stories about inspiring people are still news, and not every female role model should be a Malala etc

I take much more issue with the slew of "Take a break" style human interest stories about Jenny from Uttoxeter who shaved 18p off her heating bill using old socks.

DarkShade · 14/02/2023 13:48

Friends, 'Queen' is an expression. Do you also object to people being called 'Legends'?

I think it's in the news because the super bowl show is a big deal in the US, and using it to announce a pregnancy is designed to be newsworthy. It's fine not to care, I agree with you that the story holds 0 interest.
