Rihanna's pregnancy on the news

Aibu to think that this has no place on national news?
Currently watching ITV news and they've just done a piece on Rihanna at the Super Bowl, during which they showed no actual footage of her performance (only photographs) and said she's revealed her pregnancy.

I have nothing against Rihanna, on a personal level I'm pleased for her. ^But, what is the point of reporting on a performance without actually showing any of said performance and why is a singer's pregnancy on national news in Britain?

It's not like there's nothing else going on so they need to fill time with this vacuous shit. That's what tabloids are for!^

They probably didn’t have rights to play the footage.

the baby thing is news cos the gap between the kids is very small

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 07:39

It's news for Rihanna but not everyone else. By all means put it on Instagram or something but the national news should be more concerned with the serious events going on in the world not gossiping about celebrity pregnancies.

The other thing that's wound me up is the reporting on that rugby player who got filmed cheating on his wife and the footage put on SM. How are twitter allowed to post this and why is it headline news? There's no consideration for his kids and really it's a private matter

I agree that it will be because they don't have the rights but have you seen Rihanna's performance? I could barely get out of bed at 3 months pregnant. She's a queen.

Her performance was rubbish and crass. She should have stayed at home.

RecoIIectionsMayVary · 14/02/2023 07:42

The rugby thing isn't private because it happened in public. The only person who had no consideration is him.

I agree about Rihanna, I don't get that it is news. Also I don't like when people highjack things and make it all about them.

Hidingawaytoday · 14/02/2023 07:47

I said something similar to my dh yesterday - we were watching bbc news, and it had that line at the bottom that goes through the headlines - there was various ones about the earthquake and a couple of other important things... then Rhianna reveals her pregnancy. It's lovely for her, but not really on a par with actual world news.

HRTQueen · 14/02/2023 07:52

The news was that she performed half time at the Super Bowl and announced she was pregnant regardless is she was pregnant this was still news

if it was at a concert or announced on Twitter it wouldn’t be on the news unless in a celebrity news section

Deliaskis · 14/02/2023 07:58

Slightly off topic but I was more baffled by the BBC front page telling us that Camilla has tested positive for COVID. Why did anybody need to know that at all? The phrasing 'tested positive' makes it feel like we are being told some private personal health info that we shouldn't be privy to (would they tell us if she tested positive for other infectious diseases...I doubt it?), and it's simply not news. They could simply say she's unwell so not attending her engagements. It just feels gratuitous to know more than that.

StrawBeretMoose · 14/02/2023 08:03

Agree that Rhianna's pregnancy is not on a par with actual news and shouldn't be reported as such.

Camilla's covid is probably reported because there will be speculation when she misses engagements.

Well I'm pretty sure she's crying all the way to the bank because you didn't like it

namechangeforthisbleep · 14/02/2023 08:07

Because it was cool AF

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 08:12

To me it doesn't matter how cool Rihanna is or how well/badly the performance went - it still has no place on national news. Especially not in a week when there are thousands of people buried under buildings in Turkey and Syria, people are dying in wars etc. Totally crass to put that in the same programme, as if a celebrity's pregnancy news is on a par with these other events

The half time super bowl performance is never repeated, it's only broadcast live during half time and isn't shown again even by the networks that showed the game and can show the highlights!

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 08:24

I've seen highlights on Sky though. ITV news just showed photos.

The Super Bowl has no cultural relevance in the UK anyway, so imo shouldn't be on our national news anyway. At best, it should be on Lorraine or something

Loving all the use of ‘should’ and ‘shouldn't’ be on the news when it is and it’s generated conversation.

Some people think it’s newsworthy, some don’t - neither are correct.

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 08:32

If I had a loved one who was missing or a relative caught up in the earthquake, I'd consider it pretty insensitive to see Rihanna's pg news given coverage in the same programme. It's celebrity gossip, rather than news.

I do love celebrity gossip btw - I'm just not convinced that tacked into the end of a news broadcast when there's serious stuff going on in the world, is the place for it

Sapphire387 · 14/02/2023 08:44

Tbh, I think it's nice to have a bit of respite from the constant bad news.

LakeTiticaca · 14/02/2023 09:06

Assuming it wasn't the leading story and it was just added at the end of the programme, why I it such a problem?
The national news often tags on a little story at the end that is not doom and gloom.
It's not Rhiannas fault ther has been an earthquake in Turkey!!

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 09:14

I just don't think it's news. It's a personal event that millions of women do every day - Im happy for Rihanna on a personal level but I just don't think national news is the right place for celebrity pregnancy announcements. And I find it a bit jarring having vacuous stories tacked on to the end of the news or headlines going across the bottom of the screen when the news has been reporting on massive suffering and loss of life.

This. As if what that poster thinks will matter one jot to her.

purpledalmation · 14/02/2023 10:07

I totally agree. Rihanna/Beyoncé et al are not of national importance. Not even in the category of 'good news' news.

LOL at this. Most women work, exercise, look after kids etc. in first trimester and aren't called queens.

Agreed. Celebrity news section is right at the very bottom of new website.

Namechangedforthisonetoday · 14/02/2023 10:16

On a separate note, where has this thing about calling Queens come from? If anyone is a Queen for getting up and cracking on, I’d say it’s all the doctors, nurses, firefighters, women in the army/police etc putting your neck on the line everyday for the public and working themselves in to the ground. Or the women ditched by their partner and fighting to keep their families heads above water in this current climate. Not someone parading about on the telly singing a song.
