Rihanna's pregnancy on the news

ImAvingOops · 13/02/2023 13:55

Aibu to think that this has no place on national news?
Currently watching ITV news and they've just done a piece on Rihanna at the Super Bowl, during which they showed no actual footage of her performance (only photographs) and said she's revealed her pregnancy.

I have nothing against Rihanna, on a personal level I'm pleased for her. ^But, what is the point of reporting on a performance without actually showing any of said performance and why is a singer's pregnancy on national news in Britain?

It's not like there's nothing else going on so they need to fill time with this vacuous shit. That's what tabloids are for!^

I agree that it will be because they don't have the rights but have you seen Rihanna's performance? I could barely get out of bed at 3 months pregnant. She's a queen.

Yeah, because rubbing your fanny and sniffing your fingers is so queen like Confused

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 10:26

Eww, that sounds gross! Can people not just sing and dance without all that?
I have only seen a few clips, not the whole performance but I do agree with pp that doing a 15 minute set isn't work in the same way as doing a normal full time job while pregnant.
What is nice though, is that female performers are now celebrated when pregnant and not made to feel that performing is somehow inappropriate or shameful - I remember when women like Siobhan Fahey and Neneh Cherry were given criticism for being on TOTP and dancing while pg.

Still shouldn't be on the news though!

It's massive news that a celebrity of her status is actually pregnant rather than hiring another woman's womb.

SunnySnowdrop · 14/02/2023 10:30

I find itv and bbc news utterly watered down these days.

Her performance was dire and she can't sing. 3 months pregnant or not

CatJumperTwat · 14/02/2023 10:33

I didn't watch the Superbowl but I've heard so much about it, I feel like I have. People are clearly very interested and that's why it's on the news.

Blame the vacuous, celebrity-obsessed public. Not the news outlets giving their viewers what they want.

TangledBlue · 14/02/2023 10:34

I'm not sure exactly what you were expecting from the ITV Lunchtime News, sandwiched in between Loose Women and Dickinson's Real Deal, but you might be better switching it off and reading the Financial Times or something in future...

Slightly off topic but I was more baffled by the BBC front page telling us that Camilla has tested positive for COVID. Why did anybody need to know that at all? The phrasing 'tested positive' makes it feel like we are being told some private personal health info that we shouldn't be privy to (would they tell us if she tested positive for other infectious diseases...I doubt it?), and it's simply not news. They could simply say she's unwell so not attending her engagements. It just feels gratuitous to know more than that.

Given her age there'd be all sorts of speculation. I can understand them just telling the truth. I now believe that we are being fed just what whoever is in charge wants us to know. Having seen the Police completely lie about criminal activity and go into denial, it is all bread and circuses. I'm wondering what's going to be slipped through in May while the coronation, H&M dominate the News.

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 10:43

It takes me all week to read the weekend FT as it is!
But I should be able to watch the news and it be actual news, even if it is on amongst the usual itv shite.

I'm not sure the media are giving the public what it wants - it seems to be telling us what we want.
Although I do take your point that itv daytime is absolutely dire

So you deny that lots of people are interested in Rihanna and other celebrities?

LOL at this. Most women work, exercise, look after kids etc. in first trimester and aren't called queens.

LOL at the women who don’t have good pregnancies, right? LOL at me who was in hospital for the entirety? LOL at me who was 10kg lighter at 3 months than at conception. LOL at the women who are so unwell that they lose their baby? LOL at me being in a wheelchair from six months from muscle atrophy and sickness?

LOL LOL LOL because “most women” are able to do every day things it’s just hilarious when someone can’t 🙄and even more hilarious when someone is actually showing solidarity and support for another woman instead of relentless nastiness and bitching (because, let’s be honest, it’s clear bullshit to think “most woman” could pull off that level of activity or stress whilst pregnant).

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 11:05

People might well be interested in Rihanna. But that doesn't mean her pregnancy is news worthy. The place for that is Loose Women, not the news!

@Dijoduo you're taking her comment way too seriously🤣🤣

I don't think three letters warranted a two paragraph response, it was a fairly generic reply. Unless you're a big Rihanna fan, no, she's not a queen just for existing while pregnant. She gets paid millions to do that. If I did, I'd turn up on stage too.

  1. She didn’t just “exist”, did she?
  2. She didn’t get paid
  3. It’s funny how people on this site seem to think being nasty is the default and being a decent human is some outrageous behaviour
Holidayhomehell · 14/02/2023 12:13

The news that is reported is always a mix.

Talking about Rhianna’s performance or pregnancy does not in any way take away from the importance of other news stories or tragedies that are taking place around the world.

What it does offer is some light relief for
some people.

It is crucial we know about Turkey, Syria, Ukraine, the murder of innocent teenagers etc.

But it is also important that we are not consumed by negativity and scary news. News is so accessible now and it is important that we have a balance.

Rhianna and Super Bowl might not seem relevant to you but it might to others - it’s subjective.

As an aside - just watched and think it was a pretty good performance. But kept thinking she must be roasting dancing about it all those clothes!

DaddyPiglet · 14/02/2023 12:13

•She did just exist like everyone else. She's doing her job not saving lives. Good for her, but why are you worked up that someone said she's not a queen? I have to agree with pp - LOL

•someone disagreeing with you isn't nasty. You don't win by calling other people mean. Pp made a simple comment and you make it into a personal attack about your pregnancy sickness but she's actually saying the opposite- not being sick doesn't make you a queen.

DaddyPiglet · 14/02/2023 12:13

Forgot to quote @Dijoduo

Holidayhomehell · 14/02/2023 12:14

But OP, Loose Women is just another news outlet. No different to national or tabloid news. Just a different format.

I don’t watch Loose Women but I click regularly on BBC News and like a variety.

ImAvingOops · 14/02/2023 12:15

Is Loose Women a news outlet? Not imo - it's a chat show.

I’m not “worked up” that they said she isn’t a queen. I‘m “worked up” that “someone” thinks it’s funny that some women are bedbound in pregnancy. That is actually nasty - it’s not a matter of disagreement. Disagree all you want but laughing at others misfortune and difficult situations is nasty in my opinion.

We clearly have different definitions of “exist” - I’ll continue using the correct one and you keep using the incorrect one. See how we can disagree on that without me thinking you’re nasty just because you’re wrong?

RecoIIectionsMayVary · 14/02/2023 12:27

Wtf @Dijoduo the poster did not say any of those things. Weird.

CountryMusicHottie · 14/02/2023 12:28

Just thought you would like to know OP, that S Club 7 have announced their comeback tour today and it’s being reported by BBC news. I know you’ll be thrilled to hear this.

The half time super bowl performance is never repeated, it's only broadcast live during half time and isn't shown again even by the networks that showed the game and can show the highlights!

The daily mail played a clip of her performance. And let's not forget that the clip of justin Timberlake and Janet jackson's performance is played all the time on those 'big scandal' lists.

Yes they did.

“I could barely get out of bed at 3 months pregnant.”
“LOL at this. Most women work, exercise, look after kids etc. in first trimester”

That was the statement and that was the response. What was said was said and the thread has gone from saying what she said isn’t nasty to trying to pretend it was never said at all.

Jesus Christ, calm down 😂What does your pregnancy have to do with post I replied to and Rihanna's pregnancy? But yeah, good for you, you let it all out, I think that was the aim, right?
