To eat food my dog has got her teeth into

I dropped a packet of sauce/paste on the floor. It’s a thick plastic packet.

My dog picked it up and ran off with it. By the time I chased her down and wrangled the packet out of her mouth, her teeth had made a small piercing in the packet (one or two piercings, but very tiny as she’s got very small teeth).

AIBU to use the sauce inside, or would you bin it and consider it too safe/unhygienic?

In all honesty I’d bin it. Dogs mouths are germ factories and I don’t think I would take the chance. Sorry.

WildOats5678 · 12/02/2023 17:25

Absolutely I’d use it, it’s a sauce so I assume it’ll be cooked and piping hot when served. Can’t see an issue personally.

MoggyMittens23 · 12/02/2023 17:26

I don’t think it’s that gross but could be dodgy. If that makes sense. So I wouldn’t eat it

userxx · 12/02/2023 17:26

Use it. I've shared an ice lolly with my dog 🤷‍♂️

kissthegirlshesnotbehindthedoor · 12/02/2023 17:26

Blitz it, you'll be fine.

Lavender14 · 12/02/2023 17:27

I think it's fine if you cook until piping hot.

WiddlinDiddlin · 12/02/2023 17:28

I would use it, it's going to be heated up pretty hot.

But then I would share an icecream/ice lolly with my dog too!

By “share an ice lolly with dog” do you mean you’ve given your dog what’s left of yours - or you and dog have had it in turns to lick the same lolly? So dog licks lolly - and then you lick the lolly too? Just wanted to check what exactly you meant by this

Bootsandbooks · 12/02/2023 17:28

To clarify - this won’t be heated! It’s a sweet fruit sauce that would go over a chilled dessert/pudding.

WiddlinDiddlin · 12/02/2023 17:29

Meh, still use it.

growgrowinggrown · 12/02/2023 17:30

I'd use it, I'm also a firm believer in the 5 second rule.
Now I'm off to hide before the masses freak out.

Mum2jenny · 12/02/2023 17:30

I’d use it

MissMaple82 · 12/02/2023 17:31

No way would I use it, do you know how much bacteria us on your dogs gnashers? That bacteria will be multiplying inside the sauce. Bin

To the woman who's shared an ice lolly with her dog 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Lockheart · 12/02/2023 17:33

Human mouths are dirtier than dog mouths. If you are unlucky enough to get bitten by a human you're much more likely to develop an infection.

So on the basis that I've used my teeth to get into sauce packets before, I'd probably use it.

Why am I laughing so hard at this?

I'd throw it away mainly because dogs lick their own arses.

Buildingthefuture · 12/02/2023 17:35

Having had multiple dogs for many years that I share all sorts with, I wouldn’t give it a thought. I can say in absolute certainty, my dogs have never made me ill!

jannier · 12/02/2023 17:35

Some people have dogs luck their faces and eat off humans plates I guess if that's you eat it.

WiddlinDiddlin · 12/02/2023 17:35

@SittingNextToIt

Icecreams - for those who lick with little licks and a pretty dry tongue - yep, one lick for you, one for me (but one is really all they get).

For those who bite or have drippy wet tongues, no, I scrape a bit off.

Ice lollies actually id save a bit or bite a bit off as its more likely to freeze their spit onto my icelolly.

With icecreams I figure what their tongue has touched, is now in their mouth, not still on my icelolly.

I did once have a huge row with one of my dogs, he swiped a slice of cold pizza and it was the last slice and the only food I had in at the time... Took it out of his mouth (he had the pointy end bit), cut off the bite marks and ate the rest myself whilst he looked HORRIFIED that I had broken all the rules of dogdom and theivery. I may have told him to go fuck himself too. They were dark times. (He did have dog food available!! and he certainly wasn't sharing that...)

Rosie22xx · 12/02/2023 17:36

If you're feeding other people, bin it. If it's just yourself, do what you want.

Oysterbabe · 12/02/2023 17:37

Bin it.

Dontlistitonfacebook · 12/02/2023 17:37

Bin. My vet told me that they'd encountered people who had apparently got helicobacter pylori from their dogs.

zurala · 12/02/2023 17:38

Ugh, I'd have to bin it.

Clymene · 12/02/2023 17:39

I'd eat it because you've probably got the same amount of germs from picking up a toy she's played with

Having just watched my dog lick his bum and then move on to give his privates a good tonguing I would respectfully disagree !!

Runningonempty01 · 12/02/2023 18:32

I would eat it, probably won't feed it to anyone outside the immediate family.
