To eat food my dog has got her teeth into

I dropped a packet of sauce/paste on the floor. It’s a thick plastic packet.

My dog picked it up and ran off with it. By the time I chased her down and wrangled the packet out of her mouth, her teeth had made a small piercing in the packet (one or two piercings, but very tiny as she’s got very small teeth).

AIBU to use the sauce inside, or would you bin it and consider it too safe/unhygienic?

I love my dog but ewww
if you’re cooking the sauce suppose it’s not that bad

Suzi888 · 12/02/2023 19:05

Meh ~ eat it.

Trust me. If you eat out a little dog slobber is nothing! When I was in Uni I was a silver spoon waitress for a fancy hotel and bread rolls were dropped on the floor and then put on to plates to be served. Servers would stick fingers in to plates of food and take eg slices of meat, lick finger and back in for seconds then the plates were taken out 🤢grim!

The responses here are why I don't eat people's houses often, especially if they have pets

QueenCamilla · 12/02/2023 19:05

Oh dear, the old wives tales about the cleanliness of a dog's mouth... And from the vets too... 🙄
It's not got less germs. It's just that most of them in a dog's saliva, are not "interested" in humans.

The human saliva is more dangerous only for it's potential to contain human diseases, the HIV virus for example.

Many bacteria and some viruses do overlap though, so I wouldn't take the risk with that unheated sauce.

Bootsandbooks · 12/02/2023 19:36

Hi all - thank you for all the responses! It seems I have opened up quite the debate.

To clarify, this dessert would only be for me - not feeding it to kids or the rest of the household. I have asked them what they think and they’ve said it’s fine, but I’m still a little uncomfortable. The offending packet continues to sit on the counter top whilst I debate what to do with it.

In response to comments from @VladmirsPoutine and others about feeding this to strangers - I would never do that. I find the comments that seem to have extrapolated the general state of my house and hygiene from one question quite insulting - I have not been in this situation before and not even sure if I should eat it myself, hence why I started this thread.

The dog doesn’t pick up anything grim (like dead animals, as suggested by one poster) from outdoors. She generally tends to chew grass or plants. She is very clean (bathed after every walk and her face washed before bed and if she eats particularly messily after meals), and we try to brush her teeth too (although she doesn’t always let us).

In any case, I understand that washing the dog doesn’t deal directly with the question of bacteria in her mouth transferring to a packet of sauce, but just trying to defend the cleanliness of my pet and household!

No way would I use it, do you know how much bacteria us on your dogs gnashers? That bacteria will be multiplying inside the sauce. Bin

To the woman who's shared an ice lolly with her dog 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Don't knock it till you've tried it. Sharing is caring.

lovescats3 · 12/02/2023 19:57

Bin it dog bites are very dirty because dogs mouth s are full of germs

You bathe the dog after every walk???????
Wow 🤔
I mean, how often do u walk the dog then?!

So on the basis that I've used my teeth to get into sauce packets before, I'd probably use it.

FFS of course you can eat something that's already been in your mouth.

That's not even a close analogy.

What it's more like is being in McDonald's and asking some worm ridden stranger who's never brushed his teeth and who licks his own arsehole to open your ketchup sachet with those teeth, then putting it on your fries and tucking in.

🤣🤣🤣

Intestinal parasites

userxx · 12/02/2023 20:02

Washed after every walk and her face cleaned each night ??? Why do you clean her face every night ? Think we've been doing dog ownership wring.

Gufo · 12/02/2023 20:11

Laughing at the image of a big dog serving up the sauce sachets in McDos, while dribbling parasites and bum droppings over them.

The butter thief..
Who also licked the edge of dd's chocolate bar. I just wrapped it up better..
Dd is still alive and well.

Perfectly put.

@userxx & @Euchariahere she’s my (retired) DM’s pride and joy. My DM lives with us but doesn’t have much to do during the day, so dedicates all her time to the dog - including bathing her after every walk!

Human mouths are dirtier than dog mouths. If you are unlucky enough to get bitten by a human you're much more likely to develop an infection.

So on the basis that I've used my teeth to get into sauce packets before, I'd probably use it.

I’ve seen dogs eat the poo of other digs.

Never seen a human do that (thankfully).

Bin it OP, fruit sauce isn’t worth tum ache

I can't say anything my parents remember the dogs birthday but not mine 🤷‍♂️

XenoBitch · 13/02/2023 17:41

On account of your massive dripfeed (cold sauce, it being just for you), yep I would eat it.
I would not feel right giving it to anyone else, but I would have no issue still having it.

asblindasabat · 13/02/2023 17:49

Personally I would still use it

SunscreenCentral · 13/02/2023 17:49

I'd not eat it. If I HAD to eat it (ie there was absolutely nothing at all else and I was really very hungry) I'd not enjoy it.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 13/02/2023 17:52

I’d eat it, it’s only a little pub prick hole. Last night my dog nicked a few laps of my glass of milk 😠. I wasn’t going to waste it so I still drank it and he definitely isn’t bathed after every walk (he would not be happy with that!).
