To head straight back to work after fasting bloods?

I’ve an apt during a weekday morning for fasting blood tests. I’ve said I’d be back immediately after. But I just realised as I’ll have been fasting combined with the taking blood I’ll probably be a bit weak 🙈 AIBU to go straight back or would you take time to eat something first? I don’t want to take advantage of the time but maybe I should ask for another hour to collect myself!

Take something to eat/drink on your way to work.

hennaoj · 03/02/2023 16:29

Fasting bloods is always my excuse to have a McMuffin for breakfast.... (Minus the bun though :-( )

LeatherSoledShoes · 03/02/2023 16:30

Just take a snack with you to eat after your appointment. It’s a few ml of blood. You won’t notice it.

Iam4eels · 03/02/2023 16:30

I'd stop and get something to eat, quick trip to McDonalds or Costa on the way back to work.

Hiphopopotamus · 03/02/2023 16:30

Just have something to eat afterwards 🤷🏻‍♀️you’re basically asking if you should have extra time off work for skipping breakfast.

bluetongue · 03/02/2023 16:31

I’ve done fasting bloods in the way to work loads of times. I’m not always easy to find a vein in either. I take a yoghurt to eat once I’m at work.

GCWorkNightmare · 03/02/2023 16:31

how much blood are they taking?! 😂

FadedRed · 03/02/2023 16:31

Take a sandwich and a drink for after the blood test, they only take a couple of teaspoons of blood, not even an armful Grin

Christmascracker0 · 03/02/2023 16:32

A snack bar/fruit for immediately after and then a porridge pot you just add hot water to once at your desk.

Ponoka7 · 03/02/2023 16:33

Either get something in the hospital to eat/drink, or close by. Then carry on to work. It'll put half an hour max on to your appointment time. Work won't know.

Cosyblankets · 03/02/2023 16:36

Just eat a banana you'll be fine
What time do you need to fast from? Is it not just missing breakfast? It's really not a big deal

namechange3394 · 03/02/2023 16:36

Just eat something on the way to work?

How are work going to know if your appointment was running 15 mins late or you stopped to get breakfast?

Of course ywnbu.

SnackSizeRaisin · 03/02/2023 16:38

Just eat something straight after and go straight to work. You don't need an hour but take ten minutes for a coffee and sandwich

Devoutspoken · 03/02/2023 16:39

people donate blood in their lunch break, I think you'll be ok

Bayleaf25 · 03/02/2023 16:39

Just take a banana, cereal bar or sandwich and eat straight after appointment on way back to work, it’ll only take a couple of minutes.

ClaudiusTheGod · 03/02/2023 16:41

You’ve got eight pints of blood in there, they take maybe two or three teaspoonfuls. All you’ve done is skip breakfast. Woman up!

MatildaTheCat · 03/02/2023 16:42

You are overthinking this.

A blood vial contains roughly a teaspoon of blood. So even a whole raft of tests is a negligible amount. You are just looking at a slightly delayed breakfast. Which you can eat while getting into work.

MrsCarson · 03/02/2023 16:48

I used to get mine done as soon as the lab was open for patients (8am) But was up at 5.45 to get kids up out and off to school, so would have a Starbucks and a granola bar in the car for after. Sometimes there would be anywhere from 5 to 10 people in front of me doing the same.

Musicaltheatremum · 03/02/2023 16:48

An hour to collect yourself! No way. Just have a banana in the car and eat it before driving off you'll be fine.

DuplicateUserName · 03/02/2023 16:51

It's up to you really and what you're comfortable with.

I have fasting blood tests every 3 months and always go straight to work, but then again I never eat breakfast anyway.

CapitanSandy · 03/02/2023 16:55

Banana in your bag, eat as you’re leaving the hospital. Sorted.

Tillow4ever · 03/02/2023 17:09

Have you never had blood tests done before? It's not like donating blood - it takes seconds and is a few mls.

If you'd normally feel lightheaded after not eating breakfast, take something with you. If not, the blood draw will make zero difference.

I never have breakfast or lunch, have had frequent blood tests, where sometimes I didn't even have dinner the night before, so hadn't eaten properly for around 36 hours. No dizziness etc. you'll be fine short of a medical condition that requires you to eat regularly.

Paturday · 03/02/2023 17:11

You’ll be fine. Think of it as 16:8 rather than ‘ugh I have to fast for this nasty blood test’. It’s just skipping breakfast, I doubt you’ll be weak. Have food in your bag for after if you want.

doadeer · 03/02/2023 17:11

Just eat on your way to work.... I think you're overthinking it

whatyoulookingfor · 03/02/2023 17:11

Bloody hell, you need an hour to recover after a blood test and delaying breakfast?! I've heard it all now. Do what the rest of us do, take a flask of tea and a snack for after!!
