To head straight back to work after fasting bloods?

I’ve an apt during a weekday morning for fasting blood tests. I’ve said I’d be back immediately after. But I just realised as I’ll have been fasting combined with the taking blood I’ll probably be a bit weak 🙈 AIBU to go straight back or would you take time to eat something first? I don’t want to take advantage of the time but maybe I should ask for another hour to collect myself!

The hour was including grabbing something to eat and the journey back to work. I’ve donated blood and feel very faint and nauseous after on occasion - the same with blood draws. That’s where I was coming from really. But as I said I won’t take time I don’t need.

It takes what 5 mins to grab something to eat and eat it? I think you're overthinking it!

Clymene · 03/02/2023 17:15

Just buy a breakfast bar and shove it in your bag. Unless you're a pilot, I'm sure you'll be fine to go straight back to work.

Overthebow · 03/02/2023 17:17

I’d give an extra half hour to go sit in a coffee shop and get something to eat and drink. Then go back to work.

You've felt very faint and nauseous after they drew a teaspoonful of blood?

pilates · 03/02/2023 17:19

You’ll be fine. Just buy something to eat or take food from home.

MavisFlump · 03/02/2023 17:22

I’ve always gone from work and straight back. I take a banana to eat afterwards. It’s only a few mls of blood not pints (thankfully!)

Quveas · 03/02/2023 17:25

If this procedure would make you weak, then you have a lot more to worry about than when you get to work.

NorthStarRising · 03/02/2023 17:28

As others have said, it’s a few ml, not a pint like blood donation.
I do it every six weeks, grab a snack bar and go to work. I’m a teacher, so it’s full-on and I’ve never had a problem.

NorthStarRising · 03/02/2023 17:31

I have seen adult men keel over or come over funny if a needle pokes them.
So it’s entirely up to you if you need to take more time than average.

IheardYouButDontWantToAnswer · 03/02/2023 17:33

You will be perfectly fine to go to work! Just eat a banana or have some fruit juice.

N00bz · 03/02/2023 17:35

Surely this is a decision you can make for yourself?

I get we all look for reassurance from time to time, but as an adult, isn’t this one of those things where you know how you’re likely to feel and can plan accordingly?

UnicornsHaveDadsToo · 03/02/2023 17:40

It's less than a teaspoon of blood per bottle, you have nearly 1000 (yes, one thousand) times more than that circulating in your blood vessels. You'll be fine.

Oblomov22 · 03/02/2023 17:49

I've had fasting bloods for nearly 50 years. Never been weak yet. A drink and a sandwich 🥪 soon after sorts me right out!

Lis1992 · 03/02/2023 17:51

I get weak and feel sick from my reaction to the needle - I know it’s only a tiny bit of blood for blood draw!

And hungry?

I agree with a PP. This one's not really a decision anyone else can help you make.

sunshinesupermum · 03/02/2023 18:09

Turn your head away when your blood is being taken, which is what I always do. Then stop off for a coffee and bun on your way to work if you must.

silvermantella · 03/02/2023 18:13

are you a heroine in a victorian melodrama that needs an hour to 'collect herself' on the chaise lounge?
If you are now including 'travelling back to work' in your hour then you will have to do that either way, so won't be able to get back 'immediately' in any case, unless you can magically transport.
If you feel ok, then drink a coffee and eat a snack on your way back, if you feel ill take a few minutes first before driving - from a safety perspective rather than an avoiding work one.
Either way, how will your work even know exactly when your appointment ends?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/02/2023 18:57

Pack a couple of protein bars and get a coffee on your way into work.

Ten minutes added onto your time isn't a big deal if you feel a bit weird after tests - said as somebody who would have them at work if it were possible because I really don't give a monkey's about them (just as well when I have so many of the things) - and if you're fasting perhaps it's a blood sugar issue more than anything else?

LIZS · 03/02/2023 19:03

Take something with you to eat afterwards?

Johnisafckface · 03/02/2023 19:16

whatyoulookingfor · 03/02/2023 17:11

Bloody hell, you need an hour to recover after a blood test and delaying breakfast?! I've heard it all now. Do what the rest of us do, take a flask of tea and a snack for after!!

😂Right??? I fast for blood tests a few times a year and have always returned to work right after with no issues. I may eat a banana or grab some food on the way, but even without I would be fine, they dont drain half your body weight of blood. 😂

BCBird · 03/02/2023 19:18

Take something to eat with you

Beneficialchampion2 · 03/02/2023 19:19

Have you always been such a wet wipe.

Take a kit kat with you.

IneedcoffeeinanIV · 03/02/2023 19:20

Honest to god there are some absolute weapons on here lately. Just answer the question without being rude or don't respond at all

DillDanding · 03/02/2023 19:23

Actual lol! They take a few ml.

You will be fine.

Eat something afterwards if you’re someone used to having breakfast.
