AIBU?

Surely nobody can eat a pack of pate?

There are 4 of us. Once a week we have lots of different types of salads with French bread and pate as our evening meal. We love pate. It gets eaten at breakfast on toast in the days afterwards.

We never managed to eat it all before we’re scared of it. Why don’t they sell it in usable portions?

I agree, OP. I don't eat it, but DH and a few of the DCs do. We very rarely get the end of one before it's deemed too risky to eat (and DH will eat pretty much anything, however old it is unless I confiscate it!). If people remember to have it for breakfast/lunch then it will get used up, but that's rarely happens.
DH doesn't spread it thinly, either. DCs do though as they find it a bit strongly flavoured.

I can't even stand the smell of it, unfortunately.

I could polish off a pack of pâté in one day no bother Grin

How can it be the once a week centre piece treat of a meal that you all look forward to and simultaneously you eat it for days afterwards?

Report
ODFOx · 25/01/2023 23:03

Buy a smaller slab OP.
I wouldn't eat it once it has gone two tone either.

I too was confused by this.

And by a normal pack of pate being a treat for 4, yet not finished. Finish the pate on the Saturday night!

How much pâté are you buying, OP? I won’t sleep til I know!

After a quick google I find that it freezes well (who knew?) so if you regularly have leftovers OP freeze them after 1 day instead of waiting for it to go off.

It’s because you’re eating it with such a massive salad.
Cut the salad out, you gluttons and just eat the pate!!

DH ate a packet with a baguette last night with the leftovers for lunch today.
I genuinely can’t believe that 4 of you can’t eat a pack in a week.

You're not spreading it thickly enough, OP.

This is it in a nutshell. I bloody love the advice on here!

I have to wonder what size pack you are buying.

I can get through a tub of pate before it goes off when I am the only one in the house eating it.
I would have thought 4 people having it for their main meal would demolish the vast majority of a tub just in that meal, but I can't see how you wouldn't if you then all have some on toast another day Confused

You definitely are nowhere near busy enough if you have time to think about stuff like this!

This is so weird.

I love pate and DH and I can polish off a slab in 10 mins on a few slices of toast.

With absolutely no contest about the size of the pate @pyracantha it's hard to say.

But if it's a 1kg pate - YABU and a 200g pack - YABVVVVU 😂

Here, chicken liver pate lasts for one meal.
I suspect your toast ratio.

We do a pate lunch sometimes. Chicken liver, Brussels and a vegetarian choice.
The toaster is on constantly.
You need good butter, salad leaves, chutney and pickles.

And stand the toast up so it doesn't go soggy.

OPs house on a Friday night: OMG peeps tomorrow is Saturday - which means pate night. God I love pate, will it be duck this week or perhaps a coarse terrine?

Saturday night: OP pushes back plate with small contented sigh of satisfaction "salad, baguette and pate" we are blessed

Sunday morning: Joyous news, pate on toast for breakfast for us all

Monday morning: Goodness, it's like the magic porridge pot but liver based -more pate still!

Tuesday; Ooft, sad news chaps, the pate is looking a little terrifying. Omelette, anyone?

Wednesday, Thursday- foraging amongst the tumbleweed

Friday: Yay, praise beans only 24 hrs till our super special meal of the week - who is excited for pate day?!

Are you buying some Costco-style industrial size pate?

We have it for lunch two days a week. Two packets for 2 adults and 2 (small eating) children so one pack a day (except we’re fussy and like two choices).

how are 4 of you not eating one whole packet in a week?

DH and I can eat a whole pack with toast chilli jam, that's after we've had dinner so for supper. I like it spread so that I can see teeth marks Grin

I need to know where to buy super sized pate from. I can polish off a pack of my own in one sitting but if I can get packs too big for a family of four, I'm there!

We buy the white tubs from the coop - it’s not from a pricey deli or anything.

We all like it very much as a treat. It sounds like people are putting it on as a thick layer on French bread rather than a spread? I’d find that tricky.

We have it on toast in the days afterwards

Once it’s gone grey in the fridge with a still pink middle I’m scared of it.
