To think that a jokes in Gavin And Stacey were lifted from Friends?

Anyone else notice this? So often when I’m watching Gavin and Stacey, I think of Friends, and how the jokes seem to have evolved from there.
Nessa has so many characteristics of Phoebe, how she’s a woman with a wild past who randomly drops surprising anecdotes into the convo. Lots of other random bits that will come to me!

Typo random a in the title

Should have read ‘a lot of the jokes’ !

OP posts:
IhearyouClemFandango · 20/01/2023 16:05

Never noticed that.

PacificallyRequested · 20/01/2023 16:06

Er, no. I've watched every single episode of both series (some several times!) and have never noticed this.

Iliveditwizbit · 20/01/2023 16:10

Just me then 😀

Never seen G&S but Friends ripped off the turkey-stuck-on-the-head joke from Mr. Bean. And the entirety of Friends is a rip off from a black American show that premiered a few years before it.

I read a theory the other day that out of every film ever made, there are only 9 (I think) actual different plots, so I can imagine something similar for TV shows.

Iliveditwizbit · 20/01/2023 16:22

Interesting @Keyansier . Which black American show was that?

OP posts:
neverknowinglyunreasonable · 20/01/2023 16:26

Agree 100%. Also in Gavin and Stacey the characters Gavin and Stacey fall in love and get married AND one of them is English. Erm, hello. Ross and Emily anyone? They also fell in love, nearly got married and one of them is English. Complete rip off.

James Corden, you should be ashamed of yourself (and not just for Gavin and Stacey).

BusySittingDown · 20/01/2023 16:30

I'm a massive fan of both Gavin and Stacey and Friends and I've never thought that.

However, Coronation Street ripped off a story from Rob Beckett and Josh Widecombe's Parenting Hell podcast!! A woman wrote in saying she had twins and one was a biter that would bite the other one. She had a phone call from nursery to say that twin B had been bitten but they couldn't tell her which child had bitten them. She had a feeling that it was twin A. After she put the phone down she got a call from another member of nursery staff saying that twin A had bitten a child.

They used the exact story on Corrie the other night with Gemma and the quads!

I feel like this is full circle because here's the actress talking about it on...The James Corden show 😂

It's called Living Single. This was one of the top comments on that video:

She's being kind. They stole it.

Hellsmovie · 20/01/2023 17:05

Looks like living had the same same diversity issues friends did

Hellsmovie · 20/01/2023 17:06

Living single

RedHelenB · 20/01/2023 17:10

Not really. Friends went on for ages so.theres bound to.be some plot similarity. But Phobe is nothing like Vanessa.

IhearyouClemFandango · 20/01/2023 17:29

Two people getting married and a quirky single friend? Those are your similarities?! 😂

Gavin and Stacey lived a few hundred miles apart, a fairly quick run up the motorway.

Ross and Emily lived thousands of miles apart, requiring air travel.

Gavin and Stacey got to know one another over a fairly long period of time via work phone calls.

Ross and Emily had a whirlwind holiday romance in a few days.

Gavin and Stacey actually got married and lived reasonably happily ever after

Ross and Emily did not get married and did not live happily ever after.

So yeah, wheres the rip off exactly?

DressingForRevenge · 20/01/2023 17:50

Bless your heart.

If the only ever time in your life you’ve encountered 2 women with colourful lives is through the medium of tv, you probably need to get out more.

ps I’ll not have a bad word said about Ruth Jones.

kierenthecommunity · 20/01/2023 18:10

Corrie are not above nicking a Friends storyline too. There was one with Tim buying Kev a tasteless bracelet then overhearing him bitch about it. Then (I think) Daniel telling Sinead her pregnancy test was negative when it was in fact positive to get her ‘real reaction’, like Phoebe did with Rachel.

I think there gave been a couple more but I can’t recall those.

Actually Ross and Emily did get married ,but she ran away as soon as they said I do , and she nearly came back to Ross but in the end decided she couldn't trust him but yeah I agree with everything else Ross and Emily were nothing like Gavin and Sracyb
and neither is Nessa like Phoebe

Ruth Jones and James Corden stole the idea for G&S from some Swansea boys who wrote it

Corrie also ripped off a story from Elis James and John Robins podcast....the song that producer Dave sings to his daughter in the morning appeared on Corrie. They had the writer from Corrie on the show and she admitted she just took it from the podcast.

VioletaDelValle · 20/01/2023 19:45

No but friends stole multiple storylines from Seinfeld and didn't pull them off nearly as well!

ComfortablyDazed · 20/01/2023 19:48

Nessa is nothing like Phoebe Confused

ComfortablyDazed · 20/01/2023 19:49

I’ve always thought This Is Us pulled two of its main story lines from Friends -

Triplets, but one of them is black (Phoebe’s psychic said that’s what she would have).

The Manny.

Really? How do you know?

Tbh it's not the overall idea that makes it great really... its the jokes (and the singing!)

OP I don't see it but give some examples of similar jokes- haven't seen one yet?
