To think that a jokes in Gavin And Stacey were lifted from Friends?

Anyone else notice this? So often when I’m watching Gavin and Stacey, I think of Friends, and how the jokes seem to have evolved from there.
Nessa has so many characteristics of Phoebe, how she’s a woman with a wild past who randomly drops surprising anecdotes into the convo. Lots of other random bits that will come to me!

YANBU, I tried to warch Gavin & Stacey once and the entire plot of that episode was completely copied from Friends. So closely that I even knew the ending! Can’t stand lazy writers, didn’t bother again.

Which episode?

No but friends stole multiple storylines from Seinfeld and didn't pull them off nearly as well!

Agreed!

lljkk · 20/01/2023 20:50

Friends lifted its gags storylines & jokes from every other American sitcom that came before it.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 20/01/2023 20:52

I'm convinced the Midsommer Murders writing team get their inspiration from MN.

Fizbosshoes · 20/01/2023 20:57

Anyone remember The upper Hand in maybe the early 1990s which was the UK version of a US series called Who's the boss?

Iliveditwizbit · 20/01/2023 20:58

I can’t think Phoebe is like Nessa exactly, just that her character is used as a springboard for similar jokes . The implication of a colourful sex life (I didn’t have my bag / my cloak/ my tools- Nessa) Lots of similar jokes around Phoebes character. The weird surprisingly worldly odd jobs of their past tossed into conversation.
And there’s the kind of odd insular relationship between Monica and Ross, which is mirrored in lots of jokes between Smithy and his sister.
The Christmas present opening scenes, just lots of little things.
I guess friends has been going so long it covered most eventualities.

YABU. I've seen every episode of friends and G & S and I've never seen any similarities. Ness and Phoebe couldn't be more different. Also in an interview James Corden said he based the idea on an ex girlfriend who lived in Barry. Him and Ruth became friends on Fat Friends and started writing together.

I think any similarities are a bit of a stretch. Gavin and Stacey is one of the most British of British things I've ever seen.

Yep! Was about to comment this!! So many storylines friends just ripped off from Seinfeld!

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 20/01/2023 21:03

A lot of joke theft goes on in the comedy world.

But James Corden was called out recently for copying one of Ricky Gervais' jokes almost word for word.

And Friends owes a LOT to Seinfeld.

RedHelenB · 20/01/2023 17:10

Not really. Friends went on for ages so.theres bound to.be some plot similarity. But Phobe is nothing like Vanessa.

This they are not the same at all

ComfortablyDazed · 20/01/2023 21:09

Smithy’s sister barely even appears in G&S.

So because one character has a sibling, that’s reminiscent of Friends / Ross and Monica?

Againstmachine · 20/01/2023 21:09

Gavin and Stacey is terrible, never took to it, it's just boring rubbish.

Iliveditwizbit · 20/01/2023 21:10

@Fizbosshoes yes, it starred a young Kellie Bright , who played/ plays(?) Linda Carter in eastenders . Comfort crap tv!

All shows do this to an extent. I’ve heard jokes in OFAH that were first used in Man About the House. A lot of the plots in 2.4 Children and One Foot in the Grave were similar; not surprising as Andrew Marshall (writer of 2.4) was the writing partner of David Renwick (writer of OFITG).

I always thought My Family was an updated version of Butterflies. Mum who was an awful cook, grumpy dentist dad called Ben, one of the kids became an unmarried parent (less shocking in MF).

SD1978 · 20/01/2023 21:19

I'd say that most plot line are going to similarities, all over, but I don't see Friends & G&S as a particular rip off. And really pushing to try and see similarities between Ross and Gavin, completely different way of meeting. Basically anyone not English who marries an English person in any plot is ripping off friends? They weren't the first.

Iliveditwizbit · 20/01/2023 21:19

Well it does seem James Corden was a big friends fan. So perhaps that’s the reason!

@ComfortablyDazed but when she does appear there are similar jokes . Like the physical sibling fights that continue into adulthood. Or the bit where Smithy and his sister do their well rehearsed rap, it reminds me of the bits in friends where Monica and Ross do their dance routine.

Some of them are sooo blatant too! The cleaner storyline....they didn't even try to hide that one!!

Not to mention man hands vs giant head!

I feel irrationally irritated by this 😂😂

Iliveditwizbit · 20/01/2023 21:35

@DressingForRevenge that’s a strangely bitchy comment for a lighthearted thread .
Rest assured, I’ve travelled the world , had a varied career, raised a family and my life is full 🥰
which is why I’m decompressing on the sofa musing about nonsense to chill out. If that’s allowed? 😂
I’ve met Ruth Jones, she was lovely , but I don’t recall saying she wasn’t?.

I think it happens a lot. Heard lots of one liners in The Big Bang Theory that were already done in Friends.

Calmdown14 · 20/01/2023 22:25

No. The whole premise of Gavin and Stacey is the joining of two families (not really in friends other than the the wedding episode and even then played differently).

It's about the daft customs and traditions of a family being seen through very different eyes. Repeated in the final Christmas special when they've become one and instead we see it through Smithy's girlfriend on the outside.

If the writers borrowed from anywhere I'd say it was Only Fools and Horses. They mix the daft with the serious moments and the moments of affection between the characters like the beach episode where Gavin talks to his dad. The storylines are different but I think they drew on the interaction between the characters (and why wouldn't you as it's what sets the really good ones apart).

Orangey25 · 20/01/2023 22:31

A lot of the jokes in Big Bang Theory are from Friends ive noticed.
