To think that a jokes in Gavin And Stacey were lifted from Friends?

Anyone else notice this? So often when I’m watching Gavin and Stacey, I think of Friends, and how the jokes seem to have evolved from there.
Nessa has so many characteristics of Phoebe, how she’s a woman with a wild past who randomly drops surprising anecdotes into the convo. Lots of other random bits that will come to me!

Great series but using at least three surnames of serial killers isn't cool

Anyone remember The upper Hand in maybe the early 1990s which was the UK version of a US series called Who's the boss?

Anyone rmemr the Ofiice Us which was the US version of tbe Office?

Iliveditwizbit · 20/01/2023 22:46

@Lost123454 I agree, I’m not sure the names (and the accompanying jokes like ‘A Shipman should never keep secrets’) are funny enough to warrant upsetting the victims families.

Where can I find Ofiice Us and tbe Office? They sound great, if not difficult to pronounce Grin

TimeToFlyNow · 20/01/2023 22:49

I've seen the us version of the office but not the UK one

@ComfortablyDazed but when she does appear there are similar jokes . Like the physical sibling fights that continue into adulthood. Or the bit where Smithy and his sister do their well rehearsed rap, it reminds me of the bits in friends where Monica and Ross do their dance routine.

Monica and Ross might have been competitive with each other but they loved each other and had a strong bond ,Smithy and his sister also Smithy didn't even like each other.

I read a theory the other day that out of every film ever made, there are only 9 (I think) actual different plots, so I can imagine something similar for TV shows.

It's seven. And it applies to all stories ever told. See here

Iliveditwizbit · 21/01/2023 11:19

Referring to the jokes rather than the plot/ storyline really.

No but friends stole multiple storylines from Seinfeld and didn't pull them off nearly as well!

Was about to say the same thing

Friends is the most overrated comedy ever it’s so predictable and dull I never understood it’s mass appeal especially in the UK our comedies tend to be more dour

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia takes quite a bit from Seinfeld but takes it to extremes and is very funny

Oxterguff · 21/01/2023 11:24

YABU, Gavin and Stacey was actually funny. Friends on the other hand was utter shite!

Only sunny is great, I'm not sure why it hasn't gained more traction in the UK.

I'm going to look this up!

It's on Netflix 160 odd episodes to go at.

Fabulous! Thank you!

This thread is reminding me of Ghosts when they all started watching Friends and then compared themselves to each character.

I'm a massive fan of both Gavin and Stacey and Friends and I've never thought that.

However, Coronation Street ripped off a story from Rob Beckett and Josh Widecombe's Parenting Hell podcast!! A woman wrote in saying she had twins and one was a biter that would bite the other one. She had a phone call from nursery to say that twin B had been bitten but they couldn't tell her which child had bitten them. She had a feeling that it was twin A. After she put the phone down she got a call from another member of nursery staff saying that twin A had bitten a child.

They used the exact story on Corrie the other night with Gemma and the quads!

What?! I have twins and this happened to me!
