To ask what I should buy/bring back from New York?

I'm going to New York next month, it'll be my first time visiting America so I'm really excited!

I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for particular things to buy when out there e.g. particular American candy/food, makeup, etc.

Thank you :)

Macys every brand available..huge discounts love it. Could spend days in it.

Macy's for bedding. Adore their bedspreads stop the duvet slipping. Have it shipped home. They sort out the taxes too.

Gold Bond. Best aftersun cream in the world. I pay a fortune to get it sent over here.

YYY to Midol and the big containers of acetaminophen, and also melatonin in different strengths.

If you can get to a supermarket, Jiffy Corn Muffin mix makes delicious corn muffins, and jars of decent salsa are nice too. If you buy corn tortillas on your last day they should be freezable when you get back.

Crest products and hand sanitizer from bed bath and beyond

Hahah I always get both of these plus Tylenol PM

BabyMomma2021 · 02/01/2023 23:41

I also love to bring home liquid coffee mate creamer in various flavours and honey in a bear shaped bottle!

ZenNudist · 02/01/2023 23:42

We went recently and you can pretty much take all the UK prices which are expensive enough and double them. Portions may be big but they cost a fortune.

In terms of shops it's hideous. Soooo expensive. We were looking at sports kits like the redsox and celtics (in boston) and then ended up ordering souvenir kits for the kids from the UK website.

Just spend on experiences and food. Shop when you are back in the UK.

choochooandspook · 02/01/2023 23:43

I always get payday bars (fudge, caramel and nuts), they're lovely

saltinesandcoffeecups · 02/01/2023 23:44

Sorry one more suggestion… the goldbond brought it to mind. I’m guessing you don’t have it, apologies if you do).

If you or anyone gets really dry skin in the winter… this stuff can’t be beat. It is what it says… a heavy duty moisturizer. Like it’s thick. But I’ve found nothing better. (Think cracked dry skin)

I always stock up on NyQuil when I’m in the US or Canada. Seems much more effective than NightNurse.

Emilizz34 · 02/01/2023 23:55

Crest Whitening Strips , Huge bottles of Ibuprofen containing 1,000 capsules for very low price compared to UK.
The pharmacies like Duane Reade and CVS have absolutely huge selections of skin care etc .
Also Sephora for cosmetics
However there’s very little that you can’t get at home now and no bargains due to exchange rate .
Have a lovely time. It’s such an experience

Cheap converse, Abercrombie and Fitch and Bath & Body shop stuff.

Next sells Bath and Bodywork’s here.

Emilizz34 · 02/01/2023 23:58

They also have great cough medicines that you can’t get in UK . In fact the medicine aisles in the pharmacies have to be seen to be believed .

The better stuff is in the pharmacy aisle with a tag you have to bring to the pharmacist… pseudoephedrine is OTC but must be dispensed by the pharmacist in case yYou have designs on meth production.

So if there is a bottle of medicine and a little card next to it that looks like the same medicine, bring that to the pharmacist and you’ll get the better stuff.

Defiantlynot41 · 03/01/2023 00:18

Oh, and Lucky Brand jeans if you are curvy(big waist/hip difference). Not cheap but much better fitting than anything available in UK IME

Aprilx · 03/01/2023 00:50

I have been travelling there since the mid 90s and never found it particularly good for shopping bargain. These days I don’t think there is much there that you won’t find here anyway. I’d focus more on sightseeing and dining.

Womencanlift · 03/01/2023 01:15

Stay away from Hershey it is disgusting

If you do want to bring back chocolate, get yourself to a drugstore or 7/11 type place and grab some bags of Dove Promises. It’s the same as our Galaxy chocolate but little individually wrapped blocks and flavours we don’t have

Same re Everything But The Bagel. I have a US colleague send me it by post.

Yes! it’s a staple in my kitchen cupboard

PegasusReturns · 03/01/2023 01:34

I also get everything but the bagel seasoning Grin

other than that, large bottles of AdvilPM and trail mix with Reece’s pieces.

Tiffany is a fraction cheaper if you’re in the market for jewellery but savings on everything else have been eclipsed by the current exchange rate.

handbagsandholidays · 03/01/2023 01:39

Generally kids branded clothing from Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin klein and dkny is so much cheaper out there. The variety is also much better x

Intemperatefatty · 03/01/2023 01:52

Bath and Bodyworks stuff. The whole shop 😀

Yes I know you can get them in Next here but the range is really limited and they don’t do the kind of multi buy offers that you get over there.

Oh and also peanut butter M&MS.

Enjoy your trip to the big apple OP!

mrsbyers · 03/01/2023 01:55

Everything bagel seasoning is pretty easy to buy now in U.K. a few people are selling it

SmartWatch · 03/01/2023 02:03

What the deal with Melatonin? I'm going soon and am thinking of getting some as I'm suffering from insomnia a bit. All my colleagues neck it as soon as we get on the plane home. What kind of dosage should I go for? Does it make you groggy for getting off the plane?

oswego · 03/01/2023 02:10

I live in the US, but if I move home the things I would stock up on are:

Crunchy Cheetos
Tony Chacheres Cajun seasoning
Trader joes mushroom powder
Annie's white cheddar Mac and cheese
Chewy chips ahoy cookies (not the crunchy ones)
Burts bees products (is this available in the UK?)
Dots pretzels (the red pack)
Melatonin
Yellow bird hot sauce
Trader joes umami seasoning
Chick fil a sauce
Tajin
Watermelon sour patch

PossiblyPertunia · 03/01/2023 02:16

Peanut butter m&ms

GreenUp · 03/01/2023 02:36

I'd buy melatonin.
