To ask what I should buy/bring back from New York?

I'm going to New York next month, it'll be my first time visiting America so I'm really excited!

I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for particular things to buy when out there e.g. particular American candy/food, makeup, etc.

Thank you :)

Neosporin antibiotic cream.

Livetoplay · 03/01/2023 15:44

I love US paperbacks, they’re matt covers and soft where our books are glossy covered and stiffer. Oh, and vitamins. They sell vitamins in tubs the size of your car.

Bit of a random one - on my next trip I’m planning to go to Trader Joes for some ‘everything but the bagel’ seasoning!!

Maybe go to a Walgreens and get some Crest White Strips & some melatonin?

I weirdly enjoy this sprinkled on cheese on toast

FlibbertyGibbitt · 03/01/2023 15:48

Went before Christmas and only did a chemist ! Definitely go to Ground Zero tour and Statue of Liberty boat trip . The shops are the same as here tbh, the $$ is a bit crap too.

make sure you wear good footwear as we walked 13 miles in one day as taxis weren’t stopping

JustCakeInDrag · 03/01/2023 15:50

I was going to suggest Tajin chili-lime seasoning but Waitrose sell it now. TBH internet shopping means there’s very little you can only get in the USA these days. I have very fond memories of trips in the 2000s when there were two dollars to the pound and I would go nuts in Sephora buying all the brands you couldn’t get here, but those days are largely gone and I’m afraid you will find it very very expensive. Enjoy your trip and don’t worry too much about shopping!

Lcb123 · 03/01/2023 15:52

NY is amazing - don’t waste time shopping.

Totally agree shopping for us is just for unusual snacks at trader joes and target

Lakeyloo · 03/01/2023 15:57

I bought back:
A pile of Bloomingdales little brown bags (the paper ones they put your shopping in)
Branded matchboxes from the restaurants we ate in
All the toiletries from our hotel room
Some Autumn leaves from Central park
A Christmas bauble in the shape of a big apple from Maceys
Our used subway tickets (and any other tickets from attractions we visited)
Some knickers from Victoria's secrets
One of those heart shaped pendants from Tiffany
Most importantly, LOADS of photos and memories :) Enjoy, its a fabulous place.

Friends recommend a helicopter ride if you're not scared of heights. Said it's amazing.

Love this response - agree with all of it!

American chocolate is not very nice, but I like See’s. They have a store in Greenwich Village.

Try the rainbow bagels! The original one in Brooklyn closed down I think, but Liberty Bagels in midtown Manhattan also sells them.

"There’s pharmacy shops right in the city it’s not going out of way you’ll probably go in for drinks and snacks anyway."

Earlier pps we're recommending the op travel out to Walmart etc. which is about as bonkers as 1000 paracetamol

maddy68 · 03/01/2023 20:20

Don't waste your time shopping. It used to be really cheap but now with the crap exchange rate it isn't so enjoy the sightseeing instead of shopping

dinmin · 03/01/2023 20:22

Another vote for peanut butter M&Ms!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/01/2023 20:25

Rotel chopped tomatoes with green chillies. I'd bring back a whole suitcase full if I could...

MintyPrincess · 03/01/2023 20:26

@FlounderingFruitcake you can get melatonin and crest strips here.I get both fairly regularly :)

FannyFifer · 03/01/2023 20:29

Medication is the main one, melatonin, big tubs of ibuprofen, acetaminophen (paracetamol).

Argh I hadn’t seen that. We went into Duane Reade (wallgreens) or cvs for drinks/snacks and a few things to bring home. No I wouldn’t travel miles.

@FleasNavidad

its not about getting stuff cheaper (although I got 200 Advil for about $17 last month; pretty sure the last time I bought nurofen it was about £7 for 12) but about the convenience of not being restricted to buying 12 at a time.

in a family of 6 we can easily get through 100 tablets a month between period pains, headaches, sports injuries and hangovers.

Shunkleisshiny · 03/01/2023 20:38

FlounderingFruitcake · 02/01/2023 23:21

Amazing! I’m still working through my 200 bottle of Up&Up acetaminophen from 2020 so granted it’s been a while since I bought painkillers. But the point is big quantities, so much better than those ridiculous packs of 16 you get here, so stock up!

I brought back 6x300 220mg tubs of Naproxen from my recent holiday in the States. I have a problem and with back pain from time to time and I just haven't the wherewithal to deal with a G.P. about it. They are a lower dosage than what are prescribed in the U.K., so lanzoprosal isn't an issue.

Going through security made me a bit twitchy, but absolutely no problem.

Are you aware that you can get a pack of 96 Cuprofen 400mg OTC ibuprofen for about £9 in UK pharmacies? 400mg is double strength so the box is equivalent to 192 standard tablets.

familyconflict · 03/01/2023 20:51

I love their Ghirardelli Chocolate and would defo get some of this. Also made nice gifts and much nicer than Hersheys. From memory there is a store in NY. Also loved the massive choice of Ralph Lauren clothing/dresses at Macy's. Really cheap compared to uk. Dresses about £50 equivalent (though can't remember exchange rate) Enjoy.

gogohmm · 03/01/2023 20:51

It's very expensive there, there's nothing worth buying there unless it's specialist or you want melatonin

They also sell rainbow bagels in London (and have done for quite a few years), at places such as Rinkoffs and the Brick Lane beigel shops. Those are just my local shops, I'm sure there are plenty of others in the UK.

Lordofmyflies · 03/01/2023 20:54

Don’t bother OP! Enjoy the city and soak it up but the days of cheaper goods in America are long gone.
