I saw this, wondered why a story from 2018 is still being shared

Our benefits system is very generous compared to other countries. I’m not sure of the ins and outs of this sad case but the system isn’t ‘brutal’.

Sadly OP, the first four answers on your thread are a perfect illustration of why this kind of shit keeps happening to people and there are plenty in this country totally prepared to let it keep happening.

If he was suicidal, it wasn’t the fault of the benefits system. if he wasn’t suicidal, a “brutal” benefits system could not make him hang himself.

Suicidal people will always have a reason.

Its sad, but nobody else is to blame for this. I speak as someone who moved across the country for a man, ended up unemployed and was ultimately left to starve. I didn’t hang myself because I’m not mentally vulnerable.

It isn’t. Mr Dooley took his life in 2018. The story relates to now because his daughter has recently met with the Shadow Home Secretary to lobby for changes to the system.

I thought it was “hanged” if an executioner did it to a person, but “hung” if you did it to yourself.

I disagree and you wouldn’t know because unemployment benefits are MUCH easier to claim than disability benefits.

Why do we need to compare it to any other country?

Surely it's enough for us to look at our own country and decide what's good enough?

Without more information, about his mental health, the background of the decision, etc it's not really something anyone can judge..

Try being someone FIGHTING tooth and nail and having your disability and health condition questioned, and have a bunch of witless fuckers who have NO medical experience 'assessing' you and deciding if your disability is worthy enough of receiving state benefits.

OR having your jobseekers benefit STOPPED because you were 30 seconds late for your appointment, and are then expected to live on fresh air.

That's from the DWP spokesperson but the article also says this:

Doesn't make it clear whether or not he was receiving benefits and which ones and during which part of the appeal process.

Sounds like an overly complicated system.
