Random Mumsnet opinion check please brought on by tissue disaster in our load of washing for Christmas Day outfits

In a house with two adults. Who has the responsibility to check pockets in hoodies and trousers before putting the wash on (ie straight from laundry basket)?

The person who put their clothes in the basket should empty pockets first-YANBU

The person putting the wash on should check pockets as items go into the machine-YABU

It might be the responsibility of the person who put their stuff in the laundry basket, but the washer loader would be daft not to check, if their own clothes are in there too.
It's nice to be morally right, but I'd rather not have my own clothes spoiled

Rainbowshit · 24/12/2022 21:08

It's idiotic to put clothes in the washing machine without checking the pockets.

BMW6 · 24/12/2022 21:08

It is ALWAYS and only the responsibility of the person who last wore the garment.

There is no other rationale. Ever.

Ultimately the laundry person, after much suggestion to others to check pockets, over the years I've found loads of useful things with the best finds being money; finders keepers...

Just to add, I often do a Laundry Fairy Dance as I deliver clean folded clothes - it's so highly embarassing for them that they can hardly ignore the Laundry Fairy and what he/she does.

I do all the laundry in our house. I only do things that are put in the laundry basket. I will always assume if it's in the basket it is ready to be washed - doing laundry is a pain at the best of times without being expected to go through every single pocket to try to find someone else's forgotten about snotty tissues.

The only exception for me is if clothes are picked up off the floor and put in the wash, in that case the person picking up and washing needs to check.

Exactly this.

berrycakeandcustard · 24/12/2022 21:40

I think the person putting the clothes in the laundry basket should check and empty all pockets beforehand and then the person putting on the wash should also check in case anything was missed the first time.

Notanotherone6 · 24/12/2022 21:53

The person putting the clothes in the machine because they will have to deal with the aftermath if they don't.

Onnabugeisha · 24/12/2022 21:54

Surely it’s the fault of the Elf on the Shelf if this has happened at Christmas?

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 24/12/2022 22:25

YANBU - garment owner. No way I am going through pockets with snotty tissues in. Yuck.

featheryfancy · 24/12/2022 22:25

100% the basket putter. Once it's in there it's going in full pockets or not

DdraigGoch · 24/12/2022 23:50

Both. Belt and braces approach.

Hankunamatata · 24/12/2022 23:52

Person putting stuff on washing basket

JoyBeorge · 24/12/2022 23:54

It's simple in our house. I make DH check his own pockets because he knows that if I find any pound coins in the machine once the wash finishes, they go straight in my pockets.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/12/2022 23:56

The flip side of this is that all money found in the washing machine belongs to the launderer/finder.
