Random Mumsnet opinion check please brought on by tissue disaster in our load of washing for Christmas Day outfits

In a house with two adults. Who has the responsibility to check pockets in hoodies and trousers before putting the wash on (ie straight from laundry basket)?

The person who put their clothes in the basket should empty pockets first-YANBU

The person putting the wash on should check pockets as items go into the machine-YABU

Yanbu. It gets shoved straight in here. Like fuck do I have time to check every pocket.

My husband is a mechanic and there are all sorts of oily unmentionables in his pockets. I refuse to do it

carefulcalculator · 24/12/2022 17:33

Both, and if it gets missed it is no-one's sole blame to carry.

Every household I have ever known has occasionally had this issue at times - don't let it ruin your day.

Suzi888 · 24/12/2022 17:35

The garment owner, but the garment washer needs to check too.

Nimbostratus100 · 24/12/2022 17:38

It has to be both, doesn't it. ANyone can miss a tissue occasionally, even with checking. But if both people check, you should be ok

shreddies · 24/12/2022 17:39

Person putting into basket

Probablymagrat · 24/12/2022 17:41

Adults should be responsible for their own pockets, however I always check them before I put them in the machine as I keep any loose change I find as a tip for doing the washing. I draw the line at folding money, I do have some standards. 😀

fancyacuppatea · 24/12/2022 17:41

The wearer should check their pockets before putting anything in the wash.

It is not the responsibility of the person putting the washing in the machine to go through another persons pockets.

RandomMess · 24/12/2022 17:41

Person putting in basket, the other person should always double check though.

Zombiemum1946 · 24/12/2022 17:41

I'd say both but the main responsibility lies with the person the clothing was used by.

Cranarc · 24/12/2022 17:44

The person putting the clothes into the basket. But I am the person who loads the machine and I always check DH's pockets. If there's cash in there I keep it.

xogossipgirlxo · 24/12/2022 17:46

In my house it’s double check😂 My mum also had trust issues and always checked our pockets despite telling her it’s already done.

taurussally · 24/12/2022 17:47

It's always the clothes wearer's responsibility in this house. I happily do the washing but I'm not the only adult. If its not in the basket, it doesn't get washed. If you leave something in a pocket that's not my problem. If the jumper and tshirt have been removed in one layer and dumped in the basket that's also how they are washed. Dh got the message quickly.

Blueuggboots · 24/12/2022 17:52

YANBU! But I have this argument with my OH who believes YABU.

autienotnaughty · 24/12/2022 17:54

THERE IS ONLY ONE ANSWER!!!

The person who was wearing the clothes. Why the fuck should I have to handle snot ridden tissues belonging to someone else?

Your welcome

From the person who does the washing (and not her allergy/cold/sinitus ridden husband)

SomeCommonThing · 24/12/2022 17:56

This is a regular thing in my house. I think DH should empty his pockets before putting his clothes in the basket. He never does.
I don't always check them before I put the wash on (partly cause he's the only person in the house who leaves shit in his pockets) and have ruined vapes, bottles of vape juice, cash, bank cards, and almost destroyed his passport.

Fraine · 24/12/2022 17:57

Person who puts the clothes in the washing up basket should check.

Tell your husband to check his fucking pockets!

BarbaraofSeville · 24/12/2022 18:01

YANBU. The person putting it in the wash of course.

Saying it's down to the washer loader is ridiculous.

Hopeyoursproutsarealreadyon · 24/12/2022 18:03

Surely it's a simple as the clothes item wearer is responsible..

TeenDivided · 24/12/2022 18:04

The person putting the item into the laundry basket.
I've better things to do than check through a load of pockets when getting a load on. Especially DD's college work trousers and overalls which have about 1000 pockets each.

notacooldad · 24/12/2022 18:07

Both.
The person whose clothes they belong to should check, but we are human and sometimes people forget.
For the sake of a couple of seconds it’s worth a quick check to make sure nothing valuable is left or maybe something like a screw or bolt has been forgotten to be taken out and could damage the machine. DS 2 was a pain at leaving small metal things it’s work trousers!

barelyfunctional · 24/12/2022 18:13

I check the kids pockets because they’re little and forget. Empty my own before putting them into the basket. I don’t check my partners because he’s an adult and can do it himself, just like I won’t wash his clothes unless they’re in the correct basket.

Iwant2move · 24/12/2022 18:14

The person putting the washing in the laundry basket. I empty my pockets before putting in the laundry basket, so ask and expect everyone else to do the same. You only have to wash a mobile phone or debit card a few times before it sinks in.
I honestly never think to stop and check pockets.

namechangeymcchange · 24/12/2022 18:16

If you have a tumble dryer, bung the clothes in there. The tissue goes into the lint trap.

wolfmom · 24/12/2022 18:19

The rule in this house is empty your pockets before putting them in the basket (it is not my job to deal with another adults rubbish) and any money left in pockets becomes the property of whoever does the wash
