Is my hairdresser unreasonable to think that the hair colour adverts are lying when they say celebrities use them?

Hairdresser is adamant there is no way that they could acheive the top quality colours with a box dye and the adverts are lies.

Is my hairdresser spot on?

I dunno how to vote, but of course you can't. Or hairdressers would be out of business.

LBFseBrom · 23/12/2022 20:01

I think they often do lie or might try something, quite like but prefer what they used before. It all depends on the celeb, some will lie and others wouldn't dream of it.

BrookieButter · 23/12/2022 20:01

Of course your hairdresser is right

do you honestly think Holly Willoughby is sat there at home every 6 weeks with a box of garnier open doing her hair in the sink?

hay5689 · 23/12/2022 20:02

Yes. Stacey Solomon springs to mind with her transformation from red to blonde. You only have to watch a few Brad Mondo videos to see the results home dying achieves and it's never pretty 😂

Anothernamechange3 · 23/12/2022 20:02

I’ll concede theres a (slight) possibility they have used them applied by a hairdresser. No way they’re at the bathroom sink with the gloves on doing it themselves though

YouScumbagYouMaggotHeresKevinTheCarrot · 23/12/2022 20:02

Even if they actually used a box dye, which I doubt, they are hardly going to be tipping their head over the bath. They'll have proper celeb hairdressers applying it. Plus toners, conditioning treatments and special lighting.

girlmom21 · 23/12/2022 20:03

Yep YABU

Kfjsjdbd · 23/12/2022 20:04

I worked for L’Oréal and Holly and Davina both use the Garnier dyes.

Cas112 · 23/12/2022 20:06

She is definitely right

Plus they have hair stylists and top notch products to enhance the looks

TofuonToast · 23/12/2022 20:06

People don’t actually believe celebs use the home dye kits do they?? Wtf?

TofuonToast · 23/12/2022 20:06

😂

Badger1970 · 23/12/2022 20:06

Given the state of Holly Willoughby's hair most of the time, I highly doubt that's the work of a professional..............

StephanieSuperpowers · 23/12/2022 20:07

Well, all of those producers have high end products for salons. My guess is that they have the high end dye equivalent of what you get in the supermarket applied by professionals so it's not technically a lie from an advertising perspective but it also not exactly what they're saying in the ad.

xmaslurgy · 23/12/2022 20:07

They probably have someone apply it for them once then 4 weeks later get it done professionally

AppleKatie · 23/12/2022 20:07

I’m prepared to believe they have used them. Under the supervision of a hair dresser/stylist/lighting designer.

do they use them monthly? Do they apply them themselves? No of course not.

Do they get their hair professionally dyed in between box dye promo uses. Yes, of course.

35965a · 23/12/2022 20:08

They may use the dye (unlikely) but they don’t apply it themselves and don’t do it regularly.

Onebelow · 23/12/2022 20:09

Hairstylist with 20 years experience here, your hairstylist is completely correct. Celebrities don’t use box dye and Pantene, even if they’re being paid to tell you they do.

TellMeWhere · 23/12/2022 20:11

I think contractually they're obliged to use L'Oréal. I imagine they are dyed by L'Oréal stylists, using L'Oréal products, but not donning plastic gloves and dying their necks purple in their own bathrooms.

MorningMeditation · 23/12/2022 20:11

A certain morning TV presenter used them, when her hair looked yellow...not anymore. 🤭

torquewench · 23/12/2022 20:13

When I text her to ask during 1st lockdown, my hairdresser told me that Shwarzkopf are the nearest to salon dyes/colour looking like it does on the box.

I waited til she was back in business again just to be on the safe side...

WunWun · 23/12/2022 20:14

No celebrity with money is using box dyes. I'm cringing that anyone thought they might be.

catsonahottinroof · 23/12/2022 20:15

I think they would have to have used it if they're in an advert saying so, otherwise it would be in violation of advertising standards. They've obviously had it applied by a professional though, and probably once as a one off.

Also I don't think box dyes are any worse than professional dyes if just doing a block colour. The times I've been to a hairdressers and had a solid colour on it's looked very flat and hairdressers always seem impressed in the past when I've dyed my hair myself (usually Castings).

Walkingtheplank · 23/12/2022 20:16

Davina might as her partner is a hairdresser and he could do it.
Wouldn't it be great to gave a hairdresser at home?

marmaladepop · 23/12/2022 20:22

I'm in the trade and I agree with you, however her hair colour has always looked like it comes out of a box as it's so brassy and 'flat'. It looks like a full head colour, which flatters nobody. Hair naturally has lots of different shades, and box dyes if applied as a full head, are just awful.

ItsOverFlo · 23/12/2022 20:23

We cut and dye our own hair in this house. You can buy good quality dyes from any shop. If you want vibrant colours, then bleach first.
Every day I get comments on how my hair looks and ask where to get colour etc. We buy manic panic normally but scharzkoft is also good.
Take the plunge and try it. Of couse a hairdresser is going to tell you that you won't get the same results.
I've given up on them. I don't use them for me a and my daughter but I honestly cany even find a decent barber for my son.
