Is my hairdresser unreasonable to think that the hair colour adverts are lying when they say celebrities use them?

Hairdresser is adamant there is no way that they could acheive the top quality colours with a box dye and the adverts are lies.

Is my hairdresser spot on?

Given the state of Holly Willoughby's hair most of the time, I highly doubt that's the work of a professional..............

I was going to say this too!

NeelyOHara1 · 23/12/2022 20:31

Even so called permanent dyes fade so they could use them and it's washed away after a month or so?

Puppers · 23/12/2022 20:33

There is absolutely no way that Holly and Davina are sitting there with clingfilm round their heads waiting for the box dye they’ve applied to develop. Come on surely nobody believes that 🤣

I imagine they probably have to use the dyes at least around the time they shoot the ads but that will be professional application by a top notch hairdresser with tons of additional products, styling, lighting etc.

I actually don't think Holly's hair is particularly great day-to-day. She always seems to have a harsh line where her roots are growing out and her hair is just one, solid, unnatural colour. It's not a brilliant advert for box dyes.

Erictheavocado · 23/12/2022 20:34

Don't know about celebrities, but I am often complimented on my hair colour, including by my hairdresser. I use a box dye and have done for years. Maybe it's because I have a lot of grey, but my hair seems to creat its own tones and shades so it really doesn't look 'flat'.

lovechickencrisps · 23/12/2022 20:34

I would not be paying a professional for the result Holly Willoughby ends up with.
You'd have to pay me for that.... oh wait a minute ....

hmmmintereting · 23/12/2022 20:36

Yes, they do use the box colours. I know this for a fact. Applied by professionals and corrected/toned/high/low lights added i.e nothing like doing it at home.

Sparklingbrook · 23/12/2022 20:37

Walkingtheplank · 23/12/2022 20:16

Davina might as her partner is a hairdresser and he could do it.
Wouldn't it be great to gave a hairdresser at home?

IIRC her other half Michael Douglas said the ingredients in the box dyes are the same as at a salon but the difference is a hairdresser can apply it better than doing it yourself.

I've seen footage of Davina doing hers using the box dye.

I would imagine hairdressers would prefer you not to do it yourself and go to them though. So use words like 'top quality colours'.

Permanent dyes don’t wash out, hence the name. They may go brassy or fade slightly but they don’t wash out.

NannyGythaOgg · 23/12/2022 20:58

I use the same Nice and Easy shade as Stacey Dooley uses and my hair comes out pretty much the same colour. I'm not crazy when first done (bright but flat) but after one wash, the over brightness fades and my own tones start showing through.

Agree she won't do it herself though.

Claudia and Head and Shoulders is the one that really mystifies me.

Lennybenny · 23/12/2022 21:01

I have mixed hair. I remember seeing an ad for Beyonce using a box dye. That was when I knew it was rubbish because someone with her money and hair wouldn't use a basic cheap dye on her hair. You just can't risk it. There's a very fine balance with mixed or black hair. You can't just put anything on it. Beyonce would never risk her hair on a dye plus they use a lot of wigs.

AppleKatie · 23/12/2022 21:12

I’m prepared to believe Claudia uses head and shoulders.

with deep conditioning treatments etc.. fortnightly at a salon and 3 x a week blow drys.

purpledalmation · 23/12/2022 21:58

A celeb hairdresser used the products on the hair.

I don't believe she does because every time I need to fade a dye I use head and shoulders so I find it hard to believe she uses it and maintains her colour. I do have serious hair envy though because Claudia's hair always looks so healthy and shiny!

Speedweed · 23/12/2022 22:08

Ha, yes, she's right. A few ways to do it: celebrity wears a wig dyed with the box colour.Or the celebrity goes to their usual hairdresser, who matches the colour on the box using whatever techniques and colours are used normally, then a few extensions for volume are used which have been dyed with the box colour. Or a semi permanent similar to the box colour goes over the celeb's normal highlighted colour. Or the colour is retouched in post production. Or the celeb's hairdresser uses the box colour but then adds a load of highlights etc.

Celebs definitely aren't slapping the box colour on at home and then turning up for the photo shoot.

Soubriquet · 23/12/2022 22:09

No chance. On the slim chance they do use a box die, supermarket shampoo won’t get the hair such a good state or maintain a good condition.

HairyAffairs · 24/12/2022 07:09

I didn’t honestly think they use a box dye. I don’t think of their hair very much at all! I have just always idly wondered!

People don’t actually believe celebs use the home dye kits do they?? Wtf?

🤣

Although to be fair, Holly’s hair is awful

My friend dyes her own hair and it always looks glossy and shiny. But mostly I'd agree with you.

CactusFlowers · 24/12/2022 08:45

I think the Josh wood dyes are pretty close to salon colour but generally I doubt Celebs are doing their own with a box dye.

Readabookgroucho · 24/12/2022 08:48

Look, if I can afford to get my hair done properly rather than at home using a £6.99 box dye then I’m sure the celebs all can.

sashh · 24/12/2022 08:52

For the adverts they have to use the actual dye kit, but they can employ a professional to do the application and to style it afterwards.

Afterfire · 24/12/2022 08:52

Hollys hair is awful. I wouldn’t be surprised if she did use the box dye as it’s so flat and in terrible condition.

Yes I think it would be against advertising standards if it was not true.

Which does not mean they do it at home, but the product mentioned is used.

VHSyeah · 24/12/2022 08:54

Holly's hair is awful so I expect it is a DIY job. It's SO brassy!

Brad Mondo would be having a fit if he saw it.

Grapewrath · 24/12/2022 08:56

You could tell Holly did as her hair was always yellow and different colour at the roots. I think Stacey Dooley might as her hair is one colour as opposed to balayage or foils and it actually looks good.
On the whole though, I think you can tell a box dye from a professional job easily and no, most celebs aren’t dying their hair over the bath
