I know you have to be 13 but have you let your 11 year olds have these apps?

Dishwashersaurous · 20/12/2022 15:09

No

LucyWhipple · 20/12/2022 15:10

No

CoffeeLover90 · 20/12/2022 15:10

Some do. I've known friends kids set up a Facebook at 10.

Panpastels · 20/12/2022 15:11

Mine are older now but yes they did at 11. Most people on here will say no though I am sure, but in the real world yes they do.

Seymourcrelborne · 20/12/2022 15:11

Yes to tiktok he hasn't asked for Snapchat. I monitor his phone all the time though.

123woop · 20/12/2022 15:11

Most I know do once they get to high school

Goldensunnydays81 · 20/12/2022 15:11

Some of ds have them but I have said no to both!

Yerroblemom1923 · 20/12/2022 15:12

My 14 yr old doesn't.

UnsolicitedOpinions · 20/12/2022 15:12

No my 11 year old doesn’t and nor does my 15 year old!

Boooooot · 20/12/2022 15:13

Most I know do

AndyWarholsPiehole · 20/12/2022 15:16

Absolutely not.

Iam4eels · 20/12/2022 15:17

My 11yr hasn't got any social media and neither does my 13yr old. My 13yr old has asked for a FB account nd I've said no for now, maybe in a year or two.

vinoandbrie · 20/12/2022 15:20

No, my child is in year eight now and has neither of these, and won’t be getting them either.

stargirl1701 · 20/12/2022 15:20

No.

MilkyYay · 20/12/2022 15:21

My niece is 13 and has neither.

chrispot · 20/12/2022 15:22

In my real life most have these apps albeit they range in age 11-13. I'm at that stage of always saying no but being a bit influenced by my DC being left out / mocked potentially for not having them.

Nope to TikTok, we put it on my phone in safe mode and it was still vile (she still sees a lot of the content on friends phones or YouTube though so probably pointless.

She had Snapchat briefly but I had an issue where I need to verify a conversation she had had with another girl. As it was on Whatsapp I could, with Snapchat I wouldn't have been able to, so we got rid for a bit. I might let her have it back soon but have concerns about all the boys she doesnt know that send follow requests (or god.knows who pretending to be a boy), she promises she wouldn't add them but it is a concern.

Dishwashersaurous · 20/12/2022 15:22

And no to everyone else at school etc at that age

BeggyMitchell · 20/12/2022 15:22

Please avoid it as long as you can.

Mine does, but doesn’t actually use her phone that often.
I suspect I’d think differently if she was always wanted it (she prefers gaming - which I do limit!(

napody · 20/12/2022 15:26

Snapchat could have been designed by someone with the specific intention of circumventing safeguarding. Don't have an 11 year old yet but that's one I hope has been banned or needs verification of being over 18 by then.... I won't let her have it anyway but it'll be a lot easier if her friends can't have it either!

GoldenPineapple88 · 20/12/2022 15:33

Absolutely not. I have 2 teens and one in primary and the rule is that social media of all types is banned in our house for anyone under 16. I have very carefully explained my reasons for this, and my teens have nice quality phones that I pay for on the condition that no social media apps are downloaded. (I have full access to Internet browsing history/WhatsApp etc but so far they have proved to be very trustworthy).

Mobile phones go in a box at 6pm each evening and they get them back the following morning. There have been some complaints (everyone else has x, y, z!!!!) but on the whole they are happier without it.

They have games consoles and Netflix just in case anyone thinks I'm a monster 😂
