I recommend Covonia throat spray, numbs it completely.

I had this last week.

Awful.

Honey and lemon water helped loads. Extra lemon.

MarmiteCoriander · 09/12/2022 23:24

Have you tried strepsils, a medicated gargle or throat spray from a chemist to help numb it? Lemon and honey might provide some, limited, relief.

I have a sore throat currently, but related to a cold. The worst sore throat I even had, just like swallowing glass was when had glandular fever as a teen. Speak to a pharmacist tomorrow for advice or 111 if nothing else helping.

@SavoirFlair

nasty!

why do you delight in being so horrible to people?!?!

SkylightSkylight · 09/12/2022 23:31

@cookiemonst

it is horrible!! I keep seeing the colonists recommended on here, I might get some in for 'just in case.

when I had an incredibly sore throat I got some tissues and spat into them instead of swallowing. I tried all kinds of lizengers, drinks but everything just hurt too much, they helped once it eased a bit, but when I litterally couldn't bring myself to swallow, I just didn't.

I hope you can get to sleep & feels bit better in the morning!

take no notice of little miss nasty pants, here is the perfect place to post 🤗

TheFauxFighters · 09/12/2022 23:32

Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in warm water.
Gargle for 10 seconds (don't swallow any)
Repeat once an hour.

Will help soothe the pain.

Hope you feel better soon. A really severe sore throat is horrible.

Nat6999 · 09/12/2022 23:34

Suck ice cubes or an ice lolly.

TheFauxFighters · 09/12/2022 23:34

*glass of warm water

Pettv · 09/12/2022 23:39

Gargle with purple listerine on the hour, it helped me. Or salt water gargles.
It sounds like severe tonsillitis which I've had several times and to me the pain rivalled giving birth so I really feel for you. Sometimes you cannot do anything but wait it out with antibiotics. Make sure you get antibiotics from the gp asap! X

Stopandlook · 09/12/2022 23:41

ugh I had this a few weeks ago - nothing touched it apart from ice cream (temporarily!) I was so miserable. I got some lidocaine pastilles from the late night pharmacy and they did nothing. Took ibuprofen and a codeine and slept. Ended up taking antibiotics- don’t know if needed or not but was desperate and it seemed to work. See what doc says but you have my full sympathy! Console yourself with fact it WILL get better…..

Blinky21 · 09/12/2022 23:48

Sage, sounds mad but works, also penicillin

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 09/12/2022 23:50

Gargling soluble aspirin might help.

Solmum1964 · 09/12/2022 23:52

Dequacaine lozenges are the best thing I have ever found, or gargling with tcp if you can bear the taste.
I used to be prone to sore throats when I was younger and persevered with the above for a week before seeking medical attention. A lot of sore throats are viral and don't respond to antibiotics but do monitor for other symptoms with a mind to it being strep A.

1Dandelion1 · 09/12/2022 23:53

Just recovering from something similar, only thing I could do was sucks boiled sweets (asda blackcurrant and liquorice are a favourite) and drink iced water.

nocoolnamesleft · 09/12/2022 23:57

Difflam is usually pretty good.

Misunderstoodagain · 10/12/2022 00:03

I currently have glandular fever AND a bacterial throat infection 🤒😪 I have never been so ill and I'm on week 3. I feel your pain, literally 💔 bed rest and ibuprofen and paracetamol ever 2 hours alternating. Lots of little sips of water to wet your mouth, it's 10 times worse if you let you throat dry up!
You may need antibiotics so out of hours doctors for a prescription. Gargle salt like warm water.
Good luck OP

Wheezing at this glorious typo GrinGrinGrin

IntheSnowySnowyMountains · 10/12/2022 00:13

Gargling with Corsodyl mouthwash might help, it contains an antibacterial I believe, the same one as some throat sprays. Keep on top of your pain meds - alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol. Codeine might make your throat dry so doesn't always help.

Can your doctor do a rapid test for strep throat? I have it a few years ago and the test is like a home Covid test. Takes the guesswork out of it. My throat was very red but no pus, so there does not have to be pus to need antibiotics.

Agapornis · 10/12/2022 00:13

Sorry, you can't swallow D?!
🍆GrinXmas Grin
Swallowing D wouldn't be my priority when ill...

Unsureofitall · 10/12/2022 00:16

The only time my throat felt this bad was when I had tonsillitis. Absolutely horrible. Soluble paracetamol helped a lot.

goldenshoe · 10/12/2022 00:19

I have this too! Haven't been able to sleep for the last 2 nights it's so painful. I ended up at the doctor's today and she's prescribed some amoxicillin which I've started this evening and hope it acts fast, I just want to sleep.

I think mine is covid related though, have you tested?
