As a seasoned severe tonsillitis sufferer, I can highly recommend the strongest dissolvable Solpadeine tabs they sell. Yes it hurts like a bitch to drink it so make it small and strong but it's worth it and makes you nice and sleepy too.

You have my sympathies, I know how horrendous it feels 💐

Woahbodyforrrrm · 10/12/2022 00:22

www.weldricks.co.uk/products/solpadeine-max-soluble-pack-of-32 This are the ones I'd recommend!

maddy68 · 10/12/2022 00:25

Gargle with Drambuie

britsabroad · 10/12/2022 00:29

Sounds like it could be strep throat, see your GP for a throat swab as you may need antibiotics. Usually have a fever too

Lalalalalalafalalalafalala · 10/12/2022 00:59

I had this last week. The severe pain only lasted for 1 day but it was like swallowing glass and i couldnt speak! Eventually broke into a cold, with cough and runny nose for a few more days.

Hope you feel better soon

I currently have glandular fever AND a bacterial throat infection 🤒😪 I have never been so ill and I'm on week 3. I feel your pain, literally 💔 bed rest and ibuprofen and paracetamol ever 2 hours alternating. Lots of little sips of water to wet your mouth, it's 10 times worse if you let you throat dry up!
You may need antibiotics so out of hours doctors for a prescription. Gargle salt like warm water.
Good luck OP

Oh my god, my memories of glandular fever are so vivid that I just wanted to say how much I feel for you. Must be awful exacerbated by something else painful.

Really hoping you feel better soon Flowers

Blankscreen · 10/12/2022 01:08

Gargel with really hot (hot as you can take it) dissolved aspirin. Absolutely rank but it doe help.

I agree to spitting out the slime as that is what stings.

Ice lollies/ice cubes really help.

Lozenges can help but some times it's so bad they don't touch it and they can make you feel sick.

Misunderstoodagain · 10/12/2022 01:09

@monsteramunch thank you, I'm hoping no more fever and I start coming through the other side! X

lapasion · 10/12/2022 01:13

I have every sympathy. Had tonsillitis a few weeks ago and it was horrible. 111 were actually pretty helpful. They got me in with an out of hours doc and I got antibiotics. They seem to take it pretty seriously when you can’t swallow as it can be a symptom of something nasty.

The antibiotics did work pretty quickly. After a day, I could drink water without making pained noises and I could eat mushy foods after a couple of days! So hopefully they will give you something to help you fight this off.

SiobhanSharpe · 10/12/2022 01:23

Strefen throat lozenges contain ibuprofen or a derivative thereof. You can get them in any chemists, they can help with the pain.
Gargling little and often with warm water or soluble aspirin helps ease the throat. You do need to do it every hour or so (but just with the water!)
Chloraseptic throat spray will numb the area.
Hope you feel better soon.

Valeriekat · 10/12/2022 07:19

You have strep infection!

Wilkolampshade · 10/12/2022 07:23

As PP's have said, gargle with a hot solution of soluble aspirin. As there's a limit to how often you can do this, top up gargles with warm water.
Hope yr better soon.

Valeriekat · 10/12/2022 07:19

You have strep infection!

I do wonder ! Both my kids have been very unwell with high temperature, they're both on antibiotics, as a precaution.

I have looked in my throat and there are some white spots. But not sure if that's definitely strep a.

111 called me back twice, but I was passed out. Does anyone know if they call back again ?? I'm guessing I need to call them again ?

Throat is still raging, but not the worst I have ever had. It's bad, but I was able to sleep- so it's not the worst I've had. Although I am exhausted from looking after two sick kids, so I did really need my sleep. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I had something very similar 5 weeks ago. Just finished 3rd round of antibiotics which finally got it. Dr suspected strep or tonsillitis, glandular fever came back negative. Like you, pain killers were almost ineffective. Cocodamol took the edge off so I took that before bed so u could sleep.

The pain was horrific, bracing before swallowing. In my case the whole back of my throat swelled up, neck visibly thicker. Couldn't open my mouth to speak or eat it was too painful.

With mine, the pain worsened very quickly over 24-36 hours went from scratchy throat to crying with pain. It also suppressed the cough I had before, both of these are signs of strep.

Mr Dr was very willing to perscribe antibiotics over the phone and they made a noticeable difference within 24hours.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 10/12/2022 08:04

I'm currently suffering too. I've had it since Wednesday night. I got antibiotics on Thursday but they are working yet. It's so bloody painful that I just keep crying!

I've seriously had enough now.

Greggsyumyumsmum · 10/12/2022 08:15

Worst sore throat I had wad when I was strep throat in 2013. It was terrible, but did clear up after 2 rounds of antibiotics. Good idea to call 111. I hope they've got you sorted since you first posted last night.

“I keep seeing the colonists recommended on here, I might get some in for 'just in case“

Wheezing at this glorious typo GrinGrinGrin

@WetBandits fucking phone is going to get me shot.

@cookiemonst how are you doing today??

tothelefttotheleft · 10/12/2022 15:18

@SkylightSkylight

What was colonists supposed to be?

monsteramunch · 10/12/2022 15:22

tothelefttotheleft · 10/12/2022 15:18

@SkylightSkylight

What was colonists supposed to be?

Covonia I think!

DahliaMacNamara · 10/12/2022 15:23

Blinky21 · 09/12/2022 23:48

Sage, sounds mad but works, also penicillin

What do you do with the sage? I have a ready supply of that at least. Penicillin, not so much.

Janieread · 10/12/2022 15:26

I had such a severe sore throat a couple of months ago that I ended up swigging oral morphine (leftover from a broken arm) and even that didn't help!

Chloraseptic spray
Difflam
And ice cream were the only things that gave a few minutes relief.

HaggisBurger · 10/12/2022 15:31

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 09/12/2022 23:50

Gargling soluble aspirin might help.

This. I’ve got same and Difflam didn’t help. My late mum used to do this and as if by magic I found a packet of soluble disprin in the drawer. I like to think she put them there. Hope it improves for you - it’s grim.

i also gargle TCP diluted and warm salt water.

SkylightSkylight · 10/12/2022 17:31

monsteramunch · 10/12/2022 15:22

Covonia I think!

@tothelefttotheleft

@monsteramunch is correct! It was covonia when I typed it! Bloody phone is a nightmare for looking fine, then changing it to its own version once I hit send!!

the worst thing it does is swap positive & negative things around!! Like I'll type 'I wouldn't do that' it'll change it to 'I would do that' It's going to get me shot.

cookiemonst · 10/12/2022 21:29

Not feeling good. Now have a fever. 111 called back in the night while I was asleep. I called back this morning m, but no call back. In the line again now. Wish me luck .

cookiemonst · 10/12/2022 21:30

That meant to say, they called me in the night- I called back this morning, but no one has called me. I'm calling back again now. 1 hour in the queue.
