It's amazing what people will do when offered a huge amount of money.

Okaaaaay then. So in episode 3, Harry says

"It's amazing what people will do when offered a huge amount of money to sell photos and a story". This was in reference to Thomas Markle agreeing to have photos taken of himself by the papers, looking excited about and preparing for the wedding, for which he was paid.

AIBU to wonder what Thomas Markle did wrong? I thought he looked nice in the photos? The money was probably helpful for him given we are not all multimillionaires. Not sure what he did wrong? What was so bad?

Also, how is what Thomas Markle did worse than what H&M are doing by selling their life story, videos and pictures to every media outlet going for considerably more money than Thomas Markle got? Plus, H&M are managing to put down their entire family, and the UK, in the process.

Harry, when you said "It's amazing what people will do when offered a huge amount of money to sell photos and a story", did you forget that you said this while accepting $100,000 for selling your photo, and your story to netflix? And also selling family photos and stories about your family and country without their consent, for a netflix deal?

He's only able to be surprised by it because he's never needed money, he's always had more than he could possibly use and easy access to infinite times more if he did need it. He has safety net after safety net.

He wouldn't be amazed by what people would do for money if he had ever had to deal with not having it.

Blondbombsite · 09/12/2022 11:58

I’m not H&M’s biggest fan but what her father did was awful and a complete betrayal of trust. If he needed money that badly he should have spoken to Meghan and he should have had the decency to give her an explanation after the whole wedding fiasco. He was clearly embarrassed he’d been caught out and hid like a coward.

MichelleScarn · 09/12/2022 12:00

But as is emerging frequently H and M only attribute this moral judgement to others, they can do the same and that's OK as it's them so it's of course not the same...

FourTeaFallOut · 09/12/2022 12:01

😁 He had his photo taken, it's hardly Squid Games.

Getoff · 09/12/2022 12:01

I'm not sure what you are referring to him selling, but $100,000 sounded much to low if you were talking about a deal that included the documentary series. According to my quick google, it's a $100 million deal. A thousand times more than you said.

NashvilleQueen · 09/12/2022 12:06

I'm not going to watch but did he say that with a straight face? Having monetised his entire existence?! Hilarious

StreamingCervix · 09/12/2022 12:12

He really is tone deaf to the privilege he has.

they are upset about the hierarchy in the family? Does he have any grasp of what monarchy Is as a concept? He’s not actually saying ‘I don’t agree with a system of monarchy in the modern era’ he’s just saying ‘it’s not fair for me!’ With seemingly no irony.

Don’t complain about systems of hierarchy when your title is that of a Prince, something he is adamant he won’t give up.

The absolute audacity of a man who’s dressed in different ethnicities as a costume, and as a bloody nazi! Complaining about ‘ingrained racism’ as part of the U.K.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 09/12/2022 12:18

He's gotta realise how hypocritical that statement is surely?! Or is it only okay to sell out your family when it's them doing it 😂

They showed him excited and preparing for the wedding, reading up on UK life etc.. He got a bit of money for it. Not sure what was so wrong with that? Definitely not something to lose a lifelong parent child relationship over.

Absolutely straight faced! And said as a big put down to Thomas Markle, and with an air of moral superiority and an unsaid message of 'id never do that'!

The whole programme lacks any challenge or rigour at all.

They've now told "their truth" it's all out there. Hopefully they can stop rehashing it and move on to the new chapter.

I genuinely think he's clueless regarding the hypocrisy and can't see he is doing EXACTLY what he's despising in others (if not worse, as he's not only selling photos and stories of himself, but of other people who cannot defend themselves and haven't consented)

Thomas Markle behaved appallingly and continues to do so.

that said, it’s a little bit rich complaining about somebody selling them out for cash when he’s sort of doing the same thing to his family. He has plenty of his own money to live a simple, quiet life with his family.

OrraBoralis · 09/12/2022 12:33

It's her doing that over dramatic curtsey that finished me. What a disgrace. This was filmed before The Queen had died, she thought it was amusing, I'm not sure many others did especially Harry.
She needs to go away, they need to go away. I am over saturated with the beggy bastards.

It was the look on Harrys face when she performed it on the sofa that finally got me wanting to chuck stuff at the telly.

What a pair of arses. They bloody well derserve each other.

As for Harry saying "It's amazing what people will do when offered a huge amount of money to sell photos and a story". Yeah, trash their entire family for $100m.
No going back now, mate.

Oh yes, I wasn't keen on that curtsey bit either! Megan looked very proud of her own joke and her put down of years old royal tradition. Well done her. Great she's informed the UK how ridiculous our long held traditions are. Thanks Megan, what a saviour.

OP posts:
Precipice · 09/12/2022 12:46

Well, bowing to a particular family is ridiculous. The very institution of the monarchy is a ridiculous affront to a country that claims to be democratic. We don't all have to pretend otherwise just because some British people think it a long-held tradition. If anything, the issue is more the dissonance between being part of and supporting this institution while airing out personal troubles within their members like it's some big outrage.

Cheeseandhoney · 09/12/2022 12:49

I honestly can’t believe how much harry and Meghan have sold, their childhoods, their relationship, the, proposal, text messages, private family info, info and images of their kids, I mean they have literally sold all their privacy, and that of those around them, to the highest bidder. And clearly always intended to, as they were videoing it from the start.

it’s shocking they have nothing left, they have sold it all. From a couple who declared ro want privacy, it now looks like they just wanted to keep it private to sell to the highest bidder.

but they judge others for doing a tenth of what they are doing.

I think the issue for them was that the parent/child relationship was already lost, she already wasn’t in good contact with her dad, and he was profiting off pretending they were fine.

I’d be pee’d off if my NC family did the same, not excusing the rest of the behaviour but I’d take issue with that for sure

RedToothBrush · 09/12/2022 13:01

H & M have absoluetely no self awareness.

I think this is the funniest thing about the whole debarkacle.

They are hypocrits of the highest order.

I'm not a royalist, but I have a massive eye roll at what they are doing now.

Yep, we get it. You are persecuted. You are shat on by a hierachical system.

Now how much money are you getting for hyping up all this?

I might take it more sincerely, if they have given up their Royal titles that generate money and withdrawn from the public eye. But ultimately its about 'maintaining the lifestyle they have become accustomed to' and wanting to maintain a public profile rather than life like commoners - albeit ones who still would have a comparitively good lifestyle to many.

Its bollocks. All of it.

FlamingWreath · 09/12/2022 13:02

Harry’s ridiculousness is evident when he talks about his ‘lived experience’. His lived experience is so fucking rarified, I don’t doubt there a ludicrous number of things he’d be amazed at. He’s drinking his own kool aid.
Meghan’s dad was even less prepared for being in the spotlight than Meghan was. Unlike Meghan, Thomas Markle had nobody to ask for help. She at least had Harry, and security, to rely on. I’m sure we’d all have the potential to make stupid decisions in his position.
