It's amazing what people will do when offered a huge amount of money.

Okaaaaay then. So in episode 3, Harry says

"It's amazing what people will do when offered a huge amount of money to sell photos and a story". This was in reference to Thomas Markle agreeing to have photos taken of himself by the papers, looking excited about and preparing for the wedding, for which he was paid.

AIBU to wonder what Thomas Markle did wrong? I thought he looked nice in the photos? The money was probably helpful for him given we are not all multimillionaires. Not sure what he did wrong? What was so bad?

Also, how is what Thomas Markle did worse than what H&M are doing by selling their life story, videos and pictures to every media outlet going for considerably more money than Thomas Markle got? Plus, H&M are managing to put down their entire family, and the UK, in the process.

Harry, when you said "It's amazing what people will do when offered a huge amount of money to sell photos and a story", did you forget that you said this while accepting $100,000 for selling your photo, and your story to netflix? And also selling family photos and stories about your family and country without their consent, for a netflix deal?

and yes, the rationale for having cut off Thomas is very hypocritical at this point. I got it, at one point. But now? What has he done that they haven't done but for a million times more

You are being disingenuous.
This man betrayed his daughter for cash. When he sold the photos she still stuck by him. She advised him not to talk to the press and told him that they would get him out of Mexico. He ignored her and continued to liaise with TMZ
He didn’t even tell her that he wasn’t coming to the wedding. She found out that he wasn’t coming at the same time as Joe public. That is a complete and utter disgrace
He then continued to berate her after the wedding and hasn’t stopped since.
He is a terrible father

Fundays12 · 09/12/2022 16:16

I don't like H&M and find them quite disrespectful, spoilt and entitled but her dad selling photos was a poor judgement and she must have feel betrayed but equally she is a millionaire why let your dad struggle financially enough to have to do that in the first place.

Great she's informed the UK how ridiculous our long held traditions are.

i don't hold a torch for either of them but the bowing and curtseying in private to members of your own family (or anyone else for that matter) is batshit. No way I'd be doing that.

The thing is, the US has certain protocols of it's own - say for example MM's father was President of the US, and she was inviting a new boyfriend over to meet him for the first time. Do you really think he wouldn't address him as 'Mr. President', speak when spoken to etc. and give proper dues to his rank.

Yes it's a bit of a faffy thing, but so are the royal titles (that they both cling to desperately), it's part of the whole package, which they seem to want to dismantle and only pick out the nice bits.

Peedoffo · 09/12/2022 16:21

Hahah you are right. They have literally done the same even worse than Thomas. Thomas got cut off they are expecting reconciliation despite the have thrown both families under the bus. The mental gymnastics must be exhausting.

AclowncalledAlice · 09/12/2022 16:24

You know it's not an obligation to watch it don't you? I mean if you clearly dislike somebody why spend time analysing every word/move/anything else they make? All this "I watched it and I'm FUMING" rhetoric is getting beyond boring now. People moan about H&M being nowt more that publicity obsessed money grabbers, yet you give them the publicity and fail to see the irony of your outrage.

People are weird.

GeneratedRandomly · 09/12/2022 16:25

You are being unreasonable to not put a warning in the title for people who don't want to read any more threads about Harry, Meghan etc.
I wouldn't have opened it if I had known.

Geville · 09/12/2022 16:25

"It's amazing what people will do when offered a huge amount of money to sell photos and a story".

Isn't this exactly what H&M did?

Now Harry and Meghan are exploiting their connection to the royal family for their own personal gain

He doesn’t have a ‘connection’ to the royal family - he IS the royal family. He’s the son of the King. And whatever he does, he will always be royal, always be a prince and people will always be watching him and talking about him. Literally anything he does could be considered ‘exploiting his connection’ because he can’t change who he is.

Yet everyone wanted them to earn their own money and not live off the taxpayer. Now they’re doing it and they’re still criticised. No one has to watch the docu or buy the book, it’s completely voluntary.

Harry is only doing what his family taught him. Charles thinks it is okay to accept money and valuable goods from foreign donors - the most recent that has come to light was this summer when it was revealed his charity took receipt of nearly £3 million in cash stuffed in Fortnum & Mason bags from a billionaire who used to be prime minister of Qatar.

Charles has acknowledged his charity received that money in three payments between 2011 and 2015. But we aren't to know why such a large donation was paid and why in such a questionable and often untraceable form. Neither has it been explained just why this man felt so generous, In other news, Charles's charity, The Prince's Foundation is already under investigation for arranging a potential honour for a Saudi businessman.

Charles also employed Michael Fawcett, his right-hand man and toothpaste squeezer despite him being sacked twice for questionable dealings including flogging off valuable but gaudy presents from foreign bigwigs including a solid gold model of an Arabian dhow - that's a boat. The third time came this year. But who knows? Charles might take Michael on again..

Prince Andrew is another one with the most egregious payment coming from the sex abuser Jeffery Epstein. Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall aren't too fussy on checking who their sponsors are. They are not the only ones in the family.

I expect their helpers will all get rewarded with front row seats at the coronation.

'This man betrayed his daughter for cash. When he sold the photos she still stuck by him. She advised him not to talk to the press'

They paid betrayed his family for cash. When they sold their story on Winfry the rf still stood by them. They advised them not to talk to the press.

They are just the same as Markle Senior! Worse in fact as they cut him off for what he did yet they still expect to turn up here at events to earn their Netfkix grubby dollars.

I’m not a Harry and Meghan fan but I agree with this. Her dad was and continues to be a shameless, abhorrent man

i have no issues addressing a democratically elected head of state as "mr president". I have severe objections to addressing someone as "highness" or "majesty" or curtseying to anyone as though they are better than me just because they were born from the "correct" uterus. And bad enough to be expected to do that in public on an official occasion (i have met several members of the royal family, on occasion been required to salute them, which is ok, but i have never curtseyed to them in my life). I would no sooner cut my nose off than curtsey to someone i was meeting in a private capacity.

Were i Meghan and that had not been explained to me, i would have been furious with him for not telling me before, and i would have politely declined to do it.

"proper dues to rank" apply to senior members of military forces when I'm a serving member. It applies to democratically elected leaders who will get the appropriate clothing and a "Mr/Dr/Mrs President" as required. Anyone who gets "rank" because of where they were born and to whom? Nope.

BeautifulDragon · 09/12/2022 16:55

Plus he didn't take millions to slag off the in-laws.

People keep saying these types of comments, but what have they actually said to 'slag' them off??

As far as I am aware, they've only spoken about what life as a royal is like, what personal comments have they made about anyone?

Have I missed something?

The only thing interesting about that doco was David Olusega and that other woman talking about inequality and the commonwealth as empire 2.0. The rest of it was self obsessed whining trash. It’s a great shame they didn’t use their influence more wisely. Now they have used it up.

David Olusega is a very interesting person. I don’t know why he got himself involved in this shit.

If Harry was complaining about the ridiculousness of hereditary privilege, he’d have my full support. He’s actually just pissed off that he can’t be king.

If he complained about the ridiculousness of hereditary privilege but didn’t hand back or give away the millions he’s inherited, would he still have your full support?

LadyHarmby · 09/12/2022 17:07

Genuine question: what would be an acceptable to way for Harry & Meghan to make a living?

Maybe bc he has something interesting to say about the origins of the Commonwealth?

As a white middle class Brit, I always thought that the UK was less racist than other areas of Europe where I work and now live, but now I am beginning to think that’s it’s just better hidden in the uk than elsewhere and other EU countries are more overt about it?

I certainly agree that Brexit gave certain sections of society “permission” to be more overtly racist than they were previously (remember Nigel Farage and his now infamous refugee poster?)

He does have lots of interesting things to say but when you say them in a documentary about over privileged whingers, the bigger picture is lost, I think. Britain is definitely less racist than all of Europe but it’s not perfect. I say that as a woman married to an Arab with children of mixed ethnicity. We’ve had some negative experiences here but generally positive. My husband travels and works around Europe and has family and friends living in various European countries. They all agree people in the UK are the most welcoming and tolerate. Germany and France are awful. Ds2 has a mixed race friend whose cousins live in Sweden. He says Swedish people are awful and even got hit by a police man on one visit. He was only 15 at the time!

Harry: something related to the Army, something paid upholding the values of the country that's given him so much privilege (eg ambassador for the Commonwealth, payment through the public purse etc), something related to helicopters

Meghan: acting

If they gave up their royal titles, then they could do media work, she could do acting, and charity work then fair enough. They have lots of money, the world is their oyster.

But to simultaneously benefit from the royal connection, and keep using the royal titles while complaining about how horrible it all is just seems petty.
