murder in my town, anxiety through the roof

TunaSpaghettiSub · 26/11/2022 18:26

not an aibu as such but my anxiety is going crazy right now.
there has been a body found in wierd circumstances a few streets down from me.
not sure how much is true as there is only limited amounts in local papers but a neighbour said someone was shot, a hazardous sunstance poured on them and dumped out of a car. i know immediate neighbours have been told to stay in. and not much else has been said. everyone else seems to either be curtain twitching and just trying ti get what info they can (understandable) but no one else i know is experiencing the same level of panic, i dont usually feel like this but this is just so close to home. not sure what im asking really, how to just feel like im not panicking over the top?

I heard about this, in Wigan? it’s awful but sounds to me like it’s been a targeted attack not just random

Notjusta · 26/11/2022 18:35

I understand how scary that feels, but it sounds like a very specific and targeted 'hit' not a random killing.

I wouldn't be surprised if the police make some kind of statement to local people fairly soon.

I hope you can find a way to distract yourself and relax.

x2boys · 26/11/2022 18:39

I haven't heard about this ,I'm not too far from Wigan ,I'm in Bolton ,aounds.awful.do.the police have suspects?

TunaSpaghettiSub · 26/11/2022 18:40

thank you , yes in shevington. it does sound targeted which i guess is reassuring but its so scary. just feels really really close to home. the hazardous substance and people being told to stay inside is worrying, i just wish we knew more what was happening really

You should live in Belfast

lljkk · 26/11/2022 18:46

Something awful happened to that person but it's nothing to do with you.

noeyesbarry · 26/11/2022 18:47

Why, do you think you’re a target or something?

noeyesbarry · 26/11/2022 18:47

abblie · 26/11/2022 18:43

You should live in Belfast

spoken by someone who either doesn’t live in belfast or can’t move past the 80s

well no it isnt and im greatful for that but the fact my neigbours have been advised to stay indoors is worrying

OP posts:
TinySaltLick · 26/11/2022 18:49

If there was a risk for you, you would also have been asked to stay indoors

The very fact you haven't been asked to do anything indicates you are of course fine and needn't worry

Themind · 26/11/2022 18:50

Shevington is a lovely place normally

ChocolateCakeYum · 26/11/2022 18:52

Two murders happened to wear I lived in my last house. One person was shot and then a few years later a teenager was stabbed to death. Both were domestics. It’s sad but you need to keep in mind that the majority of murders are domestics or a fight that gets out of hand between people that already know each other. Killings are rarely random and despite what you may hear or read about serial killers and the like are very rare.

You’ll be fine.

Testina · 26/11/2022 18:53

It’s shocking when something is so close to home, but this wouldn’t make me anxious as it’s so obviously not a random attack. Gangs, drugs… that sort of thing.

Januarcelebration · 26/11/2022 18:54

Who asked the neighbours to stay indoors and why?

It’s highly likely they were told to stay indoors to get people out of the street trying to have nosey.

I very much doubt the police told them to stay indoors due to risk of murder. Even if it is due to the substance, staying indoors will ensure people are fine. The risk of getting harmed by a substance used a few streets away is going to pose a huge risk.

Try and think rationally about the situation. You aren’t in any immediate danger.

Hawkins001 · 26/11/2022 18:54

Get the deer hats and note pads,

All the best op

TellMeWhere · 26/11/2022 18:54

“We don’t know what the substance is, we have done some initial inquiries, we know it’s low risk … anyone directly in contact with the body should seek medical advice if they feel unwell but there’s no wider risk to anyone else.”

Blueeyedgirl21 · 26/11/2022 18:55

They will have been asked to stay in so they don’t contaminate anything

honestly you’ve very little to worry about it’s probably drug / gang related

DuchessDandelion · 26/11/2022 18:56

Askign you to stay indoors is probably a precaution or said to avoid bystanders getting in the way of police doing their job and to avoid the potential of a mass panic/rumour/lynch mob/whatever.

It's very shocking when something so horrific happens so close to home but recognise that you're safe, you're following advice and doing all you can.

TunaSpaghettiSub · 26/11/2022 18:57

thanks all, obv being unreasonable. im not worried about being murdered! more my general anxiety is awful because of this. obviously most other people would just see it as a targeted attack and get on with their lives

Hbh17 · 26/11/2022 18:58

You will be fine. Unfortunately, these sort of things happen quite often but only have significance for the unlucky victim.

DohaDragon · 26/11/2022 19:02

Does make you wonder what on Earth the substance is.

thats it i think
as ive said i dont actually think im at personal risk of anything, it is just very unsettling

OP posts:
NanaBobo · 26/11/2022 19:11

I understand you feeling unnerved by it being so close to home. Even if you don't fear for your personal safety it's still worrying to think that there are people capable of doing such things on your doorstep.

ofwarren · 26/11/2022 19:14

One of the papers today said that they were performing a "home office post mortem"
Is that different to a normal post mortem then?
It's all very strange OP.
