To wonder why crinkle cut oven chips exist?

So, my online grocery shop today have given me crinkle cut oven chips as a substitute for normal nice straight cut oven chips. I don’t like crinkle cut chips, I don’t know anyone that does. They always end up half soggy.

Why do shops even sell them? Does anyone actually like them? Do people actually buy them?

my granny always made me crinkle cut chips using the metal cutter and real tatties, loved them.

They are the best 🤷‍♀️the crinkles stop the salt falling off 🤣

Love them too

Because we've had enough of straight white chips running the show.

I prefer them to straight cut. They’re much nicer. Can’t understand how you say they’re soggy.

I read this out to DH and he said "because they're tastier" which puzzled me as we never buy oven chips.
We have a deep-fat fryer and I always cook chips from scratch.

Maybe he has an OW?
🤣🤣🤣

They give me a splitting headache. Not sure why. Normal straight cut chips are fine!

How on earth can the shape of chips give you a headache?

I am baffled and wish to 'scientifically' test (ie, blindfold you and feed you a variety of crinkle cut and non crinkle cut chips, both frozen and home made) to see whats going on there.

I mean I won't.. that would be so many shades of weird, wrong, probably illegal..a nd I would bet you can run away faster than my wheelchair goes but still... I want to.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/11/2022 21:04

They make the best cheesy chips, though...

bellinisurge · 25/11/2022 21:07

They exist because they are delicious. They were the norm in homemade chips when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. They hold more fat and they are tastier because of it Halloween WinkGrin

I air fried the crinkle cut chips and they were very nice😋. I still think they aren't the best oven chips, and straight cut chips are still my favorite. But I concede that that are in fact worth existing.😊

I always wanted them as a kid, but my mum would always buy the cheapest of everything - with chips she peeled potatoes and had a heavy pan with oil in it - that set between uses.

I still buy crinkle sometimes just because I always wanted them. No idea why the shape appealed to me. I still think there is something satisfying about it.

I know someone who feels similarly about the thin crispy french fry chips you can buy. Crazy isn't it?

I used to use our crinkle chip cutter as a musical instrument when I was small. I can’t remember even seeing one for years.

No I know that wasn’t a useful contribution to the thread. 😄
