To wonder why crinkle cut oven chips exist?

So, my online grocery shop today have given me crinkle cut oven chips as a substitute for normal nice straight cut oven chips. I don’t like crinkle cut chips, I don’t know anyone that does. They always end up half soggy.

Why do shops even sell them? Does anyone actually like them? Do people actually buy them?

They’re horrible in an oven but amazing in an air frier as they go lovely and crispy.

justthecat · 25/11/2022 15:26

Apologies it’s actually called chip spice

@SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth

DM had a similar cutter to make our chips from potatoes in a stovetop deep fat fryer when I was a child.

As far as stereotypes go, you will be pleased to learn that I grew up in 1970s Yorkshire in a very working class manual worker DF/SAHM DM household.

But any time your frozen potato products aren't crispy, you need to cook them for longer than the packet says. They aren't allowed to tell you to cook them properly, because of acrylamide increasing the risk of cancer (it probably isn't something to worry about because it's making a small risk slightly less small).

Crinklies in a warm pitta 🤤🤤🤤

InconvenientPeg · 25/11/2022 15:45

Elite level chips.

Dodgy takeaway in the mid nineties used to sell them deep fried, they were so good.

Now I just make do with the air fried version, but still way nicer than straight cut.

That made me laugh. I have a mental image of you - stereotypes abound and I am probably way foo!

You are from a relatively affluent Southern area
You are fairly young, born sometime in the 1990s or later
You have never made chips, your mum / nan never had a chip pan or a chip cutter.
Your total experience of chips at home has been oven chips.

I still have my nanas chip cutter. It must be about 80 years old, maybe older !

Oh god the excitement of a crinkle chip cutter! I remember it well!

We didn't have chips often as my Mum didn't like using the chip pan so rarely cooked them. They were a treat when Dad was in charge though and far ahead of his time he used to do shaped chips, before the days of frozen alphabites and suchlike. He should have patented the idea, we could have been rich! 🤣

Brendabigbaps · 25/11/2022 15:52

Straight cut are the devils work!!

there used to be a fish & chip shop in Whitby that served crinkle cut chips, they were the best chips ever

Rayna37 · 25/11/2022 15:55

I can't be the only child of the 80's scarred by the food hygiene poster of a crinkle cut chip with a fly on it then a detailed description of what the fly does to the chip when he lands on it?!

MsRinky · 25/11/2022 15:55

I love my crinkle cutter. When I'm not using it for chips, I use it on halloumi so that you still get the griddle lines on it when you do it in a normal pan.

MrsJaniceBing · 25/11/2022 15:56

Crinkle cut are my favourite.

BiscuitLover3678 · 25/11/2022 15:56

Crinkle are so much nicer and crispier!

ILOVECHEESE79 · 25/11/2022 15:56

I bloody love them!

I live in Hull. It's all about the chip spice here!

RambamThankyouMam · 25/11/2022 16:02

I love a crinkle cut chip. They somehow taste better.

I like them. More surface area for lots of salt and vinegar 👍

This! Crispy, vinegary saltiness is the best!

DWMoosmum · 25/11/2022 16:07

I actually prefer them. My nan used to make them with an old fashioned crinkle cutter and a chip pan, best chips ever in the history of wo(man)!

TheHateIsNotGood · 25/11/2022 16:08

I'm a recent convert to crinkle cut chips - I've never been a big chip fan with a lifelong dislike of deepfat fryers - but ds has oven chips and I bought a bag of crinkle cut which he didn't like, so needs must.

A vast improvement to any oven chip is to cook them through but not finish off. And later shallow fry in hot oil - sort of a double cook chip. This also saves on oven time - as you can put more in than you're going to use and quick fry in batches over the next day or two.

CheeseAndNutellaSandwich · 25/11/2022 16:23

They’re horrid and, you’re right, they always end up half cooked. Best ones are the McCains sweet potato ones, closely followed by the regular McCains ones. McCains is one of the few brands I absolutely won’t compromise on as I haven’t found any other chips I like.

jonnyjannoo · 25/11/2022 16:28

I never liked oven chips, straight or crinkle cut. But I'm now tempted to buy something that will let me crinkle cut spuds to see if they make better chips!

diddl · 25/11/2022 16:35

Also prefer crinkle cut.

The only straight cut chips here are the very thin ones.

Goingfortheblue · 25/11/2022 16:38

Agree about the vinegar - is it because of the greater surface area? They definitely take vinegar well.

I like steak cut chips and curly fries and lattice fries as well.... I'm starving (only 3 hours till dinner)

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 25/11/2022 16:39

Improved mayonnaise adhesion.

Sugaspunsista · 25/11/2022 14:59

I love them

I prefer them. The shape means they never stick to the oven tray.

Stressedmum2017 · 25/11/2022 16:41

Ooooh I love crinkle cut chips!! Drowning in salt and vinegar with mayo preferably.

MajorCarolDanvers · 25/11/2022 16:42

They are fabulous. I always buy them.
