To still have the a babysitter come round if the kids are ill?

DH has been ill, I am currently ill, kids likely to be ill by the weekend. Cold/flu type virus.

I have booked a babysitter for myself and DH to get some much needed time to ourselves on Saturday night.

AIBU to still go ahead even if the kids are poorly?

If kids are poorly you are very unreasonable.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 23/11/2022 17:46

Of course you are U. It’s not fair to expose a babysitter to germs just because you want social time.

bitfit · 23/11/2022 17:46

No of course you shouldn't. That WBVVU

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 23/11/2022 17:48

YABU it's a babysitter not a children's nurse. How much money do you think they will lose if they get ill and can't work?

itsjustnotok · 23/11/2022 17:48

Please tell me this isn’t a serious question?

Ramble0n · 23/11/2022 17:49

Why would you do that?

Cornettoninja · 23/11/2022 17:49

Before even thinking about spreading the germs around how miserable for your dc. Sorry, but I wouldn’t leave a sick dc with anyone else because that’s probably the no. 1 parent job.

Hopefully they dodge it and you don’t need to think about it. When’s the latest you can cancel?

Munchyseeds2 · 23/11/2022 17:50

You would really do this??

JustLyra · 23/11/2022 17:50

Have you asked them if they’re ok with it or are you just planning to expose the babysitter to ill children without any warning?

This was one of the things that my DD (who babysat 3/4 nights a week in her teens) instantly dropped families. It’s horrifically bad manners.

It is a serious question DH and I have no family support with the children and have finally decided to spend some precious resource on ourselves for once. I was so looking forward to it and having never had childcare before didn't know if I was OK to still go ahead or not. 🤞They don't actually get poorly.

You would be very unreasonable and extremely selfish to ask a baby sitter to (a) come to your house to be exposed to the symptoms of an illness you are fully aware you all have and (b) expect the baby sitter to look after your sick children.

Plumbear2 · 23/11/2022 17:51

I. I used to babysit. I would have refused to go if the kids or parents where this sick. If they are teenagers they could miss school, if working they could miss work if they catch it.

steppingcarefully · 23/11/2022 17:52

I'm a babysitter and would not be happy to be left with children who are unwell. Why do you want to leave them if they're feeling poorly anyway? They need their parents when they're not well.

CraneBoysMysteries · 23/11/2022 17:53

Think of it this way. If you assume they will probably be unwell (and you and DH perhaps still recovering) then cancelling now won't cost you anything and you can rebook and spend the money

But if you chance it and the kids are ill, the babysitter may very well refuse to stay and still charge you so you'll be out of pocket and without having the much needed time you want

ElmoNeedsThePotty · 23/11/2022 17:53

Are people really this selfish?

Moveoverdarlin · 23/11/2022 17:53

A) selfish to put that responsibility on a babysitter (I mean if we’re talking about a 17 year old girl who babysits for 25 quid, is it her job to dish out calpol? Take Temps? Mop up sick?)

B)When kids are ill, they want their parents. That’s you.

StarlingC · 23/11/2022 17:54

If they're still actively ill the day before then you should cancel.

Or you could speak to the babysitter to see how they feel about it and possibly offer them an extra ££.

How would you feel if the babysitter had to cancel on you last minute because another family didn’t bother to tell them about an illness running through their house?

I get that you are disappointed but there will be another chance soon
Just get a takeaway and have a bottle of wine at home

Alloftheboys · 23/11/2022 17:55

God you are selfish! As long as you get your “adult time” then stuff the poor babysitter.

ElmoNeedsThePotty · 23/11/2022 17:55

Fufumcgoo · 23/11/2022 17:54

Clearly

It was a rhetorical question 🙄

I am, I'm one of the worst kinds of people. I also like pineapple on my pizza.
