To still have the a babysitter come round if the kids are ill?

Fufumcgoo · 23/11/2022 17:44

DH has been ill, I am currently ill, kids likely to be ill by the weekend. Cold/flu type virus.

I have booked a babysitter for myself and DH to get some much needed time to ourselves on Saturday night.

AIBU to still go ahead even if the kids are poorly?

It makes me laugh that the truth is you posted on here to get reassure that the shit move you are going to make is actually OK.
It's not OK on your poor kids. Jesus. It's not OK on the babysitter.

If karma exists your babysitter will turn up in the early stages of a highly infectious disease. This will pass to your poorly children who's immune systems are low due to their current state and then you and your hubby eventually catch it of your kids. Imagine.
Be sad for your kids, but u don't seem to care so.....!

JazzHandsYeah · 23/11/2022 19:00

I get that it’s frustrating. We don’t have any family near by or friends to ask to babysit either,
but no, you really can’t expect a ‘paid professional’, or any other babysitter to be ok with looking after your poorly kids.

nokidshere · 23/11/2022 19:00

Good lord there's some drama on this thread. I've worked with children for over 40yrs now and have looked after many many sick ones without coming to any harm. Sick children are in school/nursery every day. We are talking about some probably non specific virus stuff here not a life threatening disease.

Because we all know the true intentions of an anonymous stranger on the Internet 🙄

YABU it's a babysitter not a children's nurse. How much money do you think they will lose if they get ill and can't work?

This!

So SELFISH you are OP to even consider this.

Oh givover. I'm a highly qualified, very experienced childcare professional. I've babysit for hundreds of people, I've picked friends sick children up from school because they couldn't, I've looked after properly poorly children when their parents couldn't. I've worked in hospitals, schools, nurseries and from home. In every one of those places there are children who are sick. If every parent had to stay home every time a child is under the weather with a childhood illness peoples lives would be severely impacted.

Most children with colds, temps, conjunctivitis, HF&M etc etc might not be well enough for school but are certainly well enough to be on my sofa under a blanket with a bit of tlc.

Can you imagine ringing your boss and saying I have a cold but I can't come to work just in case my children catch it? Or in case Jane on the next desk catches it and passes it on to her children? People are being ridiculous.

The OP is trying to think ahead but there's really no need to. The children aren't sick and they might not catch what their parents have. If they are poorly on Friday she can let the sitter decide

You sound selfish and entitled

Think about the poor babysitter and have some decency

It is a serious question DH and I have no family support with the children and have finally decided to spend some precious resource on ourselves for once. I was so looking forward to it and having never had childcare before didn't know if I was OK to still go ahead or not. 🤞They don't actually get poorly.

Totally selfish… you’d happily leave your poorly kids with someone they’ve never been with before plus expose them to said kids germs? Honestly wtf is wrong with people!!

The main difference is these parents you’re talking about it seems CANT look after their kids… OP wants a night out! It isn’t a necessity!

But her children aren't ill 🤷🏼‍♀️ she's just worrying that they might catch whatever thing she has. They might not. And if they do she can tell the sitter then.

Oh and the parents I'm talking about CAN look after their children, they just wouldn't get paid or have to take days off to do so. What's the point in that when they have some mild childhood virus?

Hate to break it to you, but a babysitter IS NOT a "highly qualified childcare professional". Children in school can babysit. It really isn't a profession by any stretch of the imagination.

Cornettoninja · 23/11/2022 19:47

but a babysitter IS NOT a "highly qualified childcare professional"

They generally are through agencies.

nokidshere · 23/11/2022 19:48

She's using an agency where most of the sitters are qualified and experienced with children.

You are confused. Whether a parent locates a babysitter on Facebook, word of mouth or via an agency, there are no qualifications that can be undertaken for role of "babysitting". Its a job that needs no qualifications of experience, hence children often performing the job.

Look at the definition of profession and explain how that fits with babysitting....FYI it doesn't.

Staggeringly selfish
