Something they want

something they need

something to wear

something to read

I mean - how bloody joyless is that bloody thing?

OP posts:
Lottapianos · 19/11/2022 18:49

Sounds thoughtful and practical to me. I don't want to give, or be given, a load of tat that I won't use

NatalieIsFreezing · 19/11/2022 18:49

Ugh yes giving children something they want is awful! How can they live with themselves?

NatalieIsFreezing · 19/11/2022 18:51

And don't get me started on reading. Zero fun in that. Books! Stories and fantasy! Escapism! What a shit idea!

PortiasBiscuit · 19/11/2022 18:51

I’ve just purchased a pink honk hot water bottle from B&M.
What category is that?

GrazingSheep · 19/11/2022 18:51

@Lottapianos
Are you a child??

MaraScottie · 19/11/2022 18:52

I think that sounds practical and not wasteful, the planet is fecked and you want to just keep buying tat?

stargirl1701 · 19/11/2022 18:53

It's worked for me for more than a decade now. Love it.

Pumperthepumper · 19/11/2022 18:53

I agree with you! Surely Christmas is that one day to be a little bit spoiled, ‘something they need’ is so joyless.

Ramble0n · 19/11/2022 18:54

It is miserable.

oldbrownjug · 19/11/2022 18:54

Absolutely OP I got a load of stuff I neither wanted nor needed, couldn't read, wear or eat. Still all in the cupboard - Best Christmas ever!

Suzi888 · 19/11/2022 18:54

Yup the planet is fucked, but we’ll still tap it. Let’s see how much shit people can buy and throw away 😏

NatalieIsFreezing · 19/11/2022 18:54

The alternative - giving them something they don't want or need - is far better, I agree. puts poop emoji plushy in Amazon basket haha! A poop emoji! Loooool

I don’t see how following this rule is saving the planet though? You can still buy tat under those headings.

DaveClifton · 19/11/2022 18:55

Something they need?! I'd have to be a total arsehole to get them that. What's the world coming to?

Ramble0n · 19/11/2022 18:56

What if something they want is plastic tat though?

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 19/11/2022 18:56

But if the alternative is stuff they want pius stuff you think they want, but it turns out you're wrong, it's disappointing, wasteful and equally joyless. Also, somewhat depends on if it's kids or adults....I can't afford a number of things I need so I would be bloody delighted to get them as gifts instead of a set of cosmetics or a scarf or something.

StridTheKiller · 19/11/2022 18:57

YANBU OP.

OhmygodDont · 19/11/2022 18:57

Under that rules for my teenager

need - trainers
want - air rifle
wear - hoody
read - damn it he won’t read 😅

GrazingSheep · 19/11/2022 18:57

The ‘something to wear’ inevitably seems to be pants or socks

NatalieIsFreezing · 19/11/2022 18:59

I think "giving children things they need is a bad thing" has GOT to be peak MN Grin

FleecyBlanketPerson · 19/11/2022 19:00

Christmas is the one time I'm not allowed to be the miserable bitch that I am. So I have to let my kids have a smidgen of joy even if it's plastic (oh how I hate plastic).

What category is that?

Something eccentric?

It's in the new Mumsnet categories:

Something they want

Something more they want to shut them up

Some right old fucking tat

Something utterly grotesque that only the buyer thinks is a good idea

Something eccentric
