I'm sure you could go into places like Asda and see shirts, flags and other accessories for the football.

Didn't notice anything last time either or for the Women's game?
Wonder why no displays or anything?

no buzz about this tournament at all, its so tainted, due to where it is. Even if England win, I couldn't get excited. People have died to build the football pitches. That isn't sport

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 17/11/2022 21:02

Because its being held in a medieval country and its too close to Xmas.

The stores can make more money out if Xmas stock than they can England flags. People won't be having bbq's and parties in the garden like normal world cups.

2manycats · 17/11/2022 21:02

Several reasons:

  1. the World Cup is a summer thing. It is the run up to Christmas for the shops now.
  2. they don’t want to be seen to be promoting a controversial tournament when they’ve not long had rainbow logos and Qatar is very un-rainbow.
  3. Qatar’s general human rights record.

probably mostly number 1 though.

changingroom · 17/11/2022 21:03

There was some stuff in Sainsbury's today but I agree. I think it is because it's in winter not summer like usual so people aren't in the mood for it. Also it's in Qatar (because they bought it) which has an atrocious human rights record, this has sullied people's feelings towards it.

KenCoff · 17/11/2022 21:05

It's too near Christmas. The shops, and everyone else, is focusing on other things

MabelMoo23 · 17/11/2022 21:06

It will be because it’s winter - Christmas stock has more commercial value and no one is having BBQs and drinking tonnes of beer, plus the current economic climate

also you can’t really have a rainbow logo one month and then support a medieval country the next

Grumpybutfunny · 17/11/2022 21:07

Im very much pro it being in a Muslim country for the first time but it's the wrong time of year would have been better January or February

Hbh17 · 17/11/2022 21:09

Because everyone is embarrassed that it's in Qatar - total sportwashing.

User38899953 · 17/11/2022 21:09

As others have said, it's just the wrong time of year.

Too many things going on in the lead up to Xmas to have World Cup parties.
It's freezing cold, no bbqs/gatherings.

ohidoliketobe · 17/11/2022 21:11

Big display in my local Asda, but it was all Christmas themed! England bunting with snowflakes on, England Christmas jumpers. All very odd.

Oysterbabe · 17/11/2022 21:13

They've got a display in Lidl but it just feels a bit wrong. Football tournaments should involve sunshine and cold beer and shorts. It's cold and raining.

FrippEnos · 17/11/2022 21:21

We are facing a heating crisis and the team is having to change when they train due to it being too hot.

My heart fucking bleeds for these overpaid, two faced fuckers that have gone to a place with such a poor human rights record whilst taking the knee pretending to give a shit.

I don't remember it when the Euros where on either or the Women's football in the Summer?

Agree.

I'm not watching any of it. And I'm glad there's no buzz about it.

cinnabongene · 17/11/2022 21:28

This World Cup has disaster written all over it. England should have set a prescient and boycotted it.

BlusteryLake · 17/11/2022 21:31

Such a stupid time of year to have it and so disruptive to the Northern hemisphere football season (and the vast majority of the best teams in the world are from the Northern hemisphere). Qatar is inappropriately small and hot to be hosting and that's before we even start with the human rights and homophobia. FIFA must be one of the most corrupt organisations in the world.

Vile post. Like you'd turn down the chance to earn money you can only dream off.

WaddleAway · 17/11/2022 21:33

There was loads of stuff in Asda today. Can’t imagine anyone buying it though, people are focussed on Christmas now.

Sorry but what has that to do with why you don't seem to see flags and shirts in the shops anymore?

I think it'd be ugly as sin and wouldn't buy one but am I wrong to hope that based on what you've mentioned seeing, someone brings out a Christmas jumper featuring santa with a (insert preferred country's) Jersey on?

90yomakeuproom · 17/11/2022 21:36

Because they have trafficked human beings to build the stadiums on absolute pittance, taking away their passports so they can't leave. It's immoral

The stores are reading the room. Nobody wants to be the shop that get pounced on for cashing in.

Vile is putting money in to the hands of a government with such a poor human rights record.

Womencanlift · 17/11/2022 21:38

There was plenty of merchandise out for the Euro’s and for the Lionesses

Not so much this time quite rightly. So many reasons that this World Cup shouldn’t be happening and I am glad there is little build up.
