I'm sure you could go into places like Asda and see shirts, flags and other accessories for the football.

Didn't notice anything last time either or for the Women's game?
Wonder why no displays or anything?

I was just thinking "oh that's a good point" and then I realised it's because I live in Scotland and in the world cup we play as separate nations 😂
it's been a very long week

I think it's awful that it's held in Qatar and it is the wrong time of year. My team didn't qualify so I'm not even that fussed but just as an observer it is all a little off. Waving the flag of "oh well they have poor human rights records" is bit disingenuous. This government cannot talk- we practically are in bed with the Saudis. There are many British and American firms with blood on their hands who operate in Qatar. Half of bloody London are owned by the Qatari's- Don't see people boycotting Claridge's and Harrods and Heathrow The Shard and many others. What about the Russians? The Chinese? The Saudi's? What do we actually own here? Where do we draw the line?

Give the people their tournament, show the Qataris that we want them to do better, that we are listening rather than boycott because it's ridiculous. Besides, what about all the hard work that went into it? that was put in by the very people we are supposedly advocating for? Will that go in vain?

People were in uproar over taking the knee in football, and fighting racism- saying politics should not be mixed with sport and we took it on, and now we're making football political.

I found it shocking that the BBC relegated the Opening Ceremony to online, so we could not even watch the whole thing.

That aside, I think it's mostly to do with Christmas being more lucrative and as a PP said, the world cup is synonymous with the summer for us

The few football fans I know are refusing to have anything to do with it.

The England and Wales teams should be utterly ashamed that they are there. Refusing to go would have been a powerful statement.

Good to hear that it is very low profile in the shops. I can't imagine any business wanting to be associated with it.

Im very much pro it being in a Muslim country for the first time but it's the wrong time of year would have been better January or February

Why's that? What does it being in a Muslim country bring to the table?

As for the Womens football. I'm sorry to say I struggled to find a single person genuinely really interested. I know SOME people were, and I respect them for how well they did, but I just can't garner any excitement for womens football. As good as they are, they have a LONG way to go before they get the same excitement and furore of mens football. Half a century probably! if ever.

There are plenty of fans of women's football around and it has huge growth potential if it's invested in properly. Arsenal vs Man U had over 40,000 at the game on Saturday at the Emirates (and it was a cracking game). Regular access to bigger, easily accessible venues is going to be vital to growth.

Odd, as, IME football fans were all watching, and a whole heap of families and women in particular who aren't big football families, were all watching too.

I think its mostly the time of year. I noticed in Tesco and B and M theres only tiny displays of England flags etc for sale. I've only noticed 2 houses with England flags up too, but a lot more than that with Christmas lights up.

SleeplessInEngland · 21/11/2022 15:01

Because it would clash with wall-to-wall christmas marketing.
