To wonder why you don't see anything for the World Cup anymore?

I'm sure you could go into places like Asda and see shirts, flags and other accessories for the football.

Didn't notice anything last time either or for the Women's game?
Wonder why no displays or anything?

I’m a season ticket holding football fan and I am far from excited about this World Cup. Everything about it is wrong, and has always been wrong. It shouldn’t be held in winter. It shouldn’t be splitting the domestic & European seasons in two. And, most of all, it shouldn’t be taking place in bloody Qatar. That’s the biggest reason why there is no hype about the tournament. Everyone knows that the process which allocated the WC to a country which doesn’t even have a professional league was totally corrupt, and the stench lingers.

I will probably change my tune if we get to the QFs, but for now, meh.

The stores are reading the room. Nobody wants to be the shop that get pounced on for cashing in.

This

Strange time of the year to be having it ,its only a few weeks of xmas, normally the world cup is in our summertime lots of people gathering in pubs or watching it on big screens outside not quite e the same in December

Sunshineandrainbow · 18/11/2022 00:15

I have seen free world cup metal cup in Lidl with bud beer.
T shirts in Asda and today saw a display of flags in tesco express. So there are bits about.

Egarag · 18/11/2022 00:15

Timing.

Retailer reluctance to be associated with Qatar.

General lack of excitement amongst the public - I love football and I’m finding it hard to give a shit.

DrManhattan · 18/11/2022 00:36

Just not feeling it

Im very much pro it being in a Muslim country for the first time but it's the wrong time of year would have been better January or February

Pro Muslim country I can accept... pro Qatar I can't.

Dollydea · 18/11/2022 00:55

My dream was always to go to an England World Cup match.
I remember them all growing up, I used to love buying the unofficial merch, painting my face half white and half red for every match, even getting white and blue elastics on my braces.

I remember the 2002 World Cup England v Brazil quarter final, I was in Y6 and the school let us watch it in the hall before lessons, I puked orange squash all over the table when it was over due to pure devastation! 😂

I actually live in the Middle East now, we could easily afford to travel there & it would be just a 2 hour flight.
I refuse to on principle though,

Have you seen the videos on social media of the apparent "England fans" Greedy FIFA have messed up massively.
I'm not even watching it this year.

Snugglemonkey · 18/11/2022 00:58

I am totally ignoring it this year. It is not very fun to me any year Ireland di not qualify, but this year is just a mess. The hosts, the timing, it is just all wrong. I could not bring myself to watch even if Ireland were in it.

England players earn a good living working for their clubs. They always give their international fees to charity.
That said the FA should have taken a stand and boycotted this World Cup.

I agree - and I'm a massive football fan.

Lincslady53 · 18/11/2022 03:46

There us usually one supermarket that buys the rights to sell official merchandise. Perhaps you don't shop in that supermarket. I am more concerned about my teams players getting injured than by who wins the cup. Mind you, once the tournament starts i will get into it. This is our first WC since we retired and we always intended to go to Spain for a month and follow it in bars there - the atmosphere is much better when England get knocked out - but a minor health issue requires frequent visits to hospital/doctor so we shall watch from home.

Plus, if it's so easy to become an overpaid lazy footballer - why isn't everyone doing it? Err.. because it's bloody hard/near-impossible to make it to that level and requires A LOT of hard work and talent.

Where did I say that it was easy to become a footballer?
and where did I call them lazy?

If you are going to make shit up about what has been posted then maybe you shouldn't quote.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 18/11/2022 07:59

@Bintymcbintface of course you can decide not to show up. No one's forcing them to go? Gareth Southgate was lauded for his players taking the knee in previous competitions but his interviews on Qatar have all been full of mealy mouthed excuses.

Multi millionaire footballers are in a position of great power. The poor sods dying to build the football stadia - well, not so much.

HeraldicBlazoning · 18/11/2022 08:04

2greenroses · 17/11/2022 21:02

no buzz about this tournament at all, its so tainted, due to where it is. Even if England win, I couldn't get excited. People have died to build the football pitches. That isn't sport

It's partly this, agreed. But also the timing. Usually the World Cup is June/July when there isn't a big event that the supermarkets are trying to flog tat for, so they fill up with football tat. This time of year there is ample Christmas tat to stock the shelves with, which has a wider appeal than football tat. Everyone (or nearly everyone) does Christmas, not everyone does football.

IntrovertedPenguin · 18/11/2022 08:05

Because it's winter. Because it's in a severely oppressive country. Because they've decided to ban alcohol at the stadiums a week before. Because people died building the stadium.

Take your pick. This won't be a normal World Cup. It should never of been hosted there.

Theluggage15 · 18/11/2022 08:09

I’m very into football but I have no interest in this World Cup. Everything about it is wrong. Most people that I know seem to feel like this including my footie mad son and his mates. The sight of countries trying to outdo each other in making lame gestures is quite sickening, they shouldn’t be there at all.

Bintymcbintface · 18/11/2022 08:09

OK you could decide to not show up but you probably wouldn't be employed much longer

Players are employed by their clubs who would be delighted if they hadn’t gone.

Watch Kickback on Amazon Prime, brilliant viewing and we should all be boycotting the whole damn thing.

Completely agree with this.

We should stop using anything made in China as well. It is a totalitarian regime with a gross human rights record.

I would absolutely love it if this happened.

This. But somehow I doubt too many people are going to concern themselves with that as they fill their shopping baskets full of presents for Christmas.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 18/11/2022 08:44

@Theluggage15 yeah, like they'd sack all their biggest money making machines.

It was Italia 1990 and that was a cracking year for Irish football. I was devastated when they went out!

You don't appear to understand how employment of footballers actually works.
