To feel sorry for people with horses?

Including me!!!

there should be a specific form of seasonal affected disorder for equestrians in the winter! Or some kind of therapy for helping us deal with the trauma of the winter months!

I posted something about winter 2 months ago but I can’t find it now and I’ve namechanged since then 🤣 just a follow up to that thread!

Why does the winter have to be so cold, wet and awful?! It was quite mild here (Scotland) and all of a sudden about 2 weeks ago it’s suddenly freezing. Everything is wet and muddy, my entire wage is being spent on feeds, shavings and rugs and it’s just generally crap. My hands are like ice cubes, my toes are frozen solid, my arse is freezing in the saddle EVERYTHING is wet and muddy. The other day I slipped on my arse in the field and landed in a big pile of cold, wet, squishy mud. I actually burst into tears- winter has ruined me!

but apart from that it’s great! 🤣 I have a thoroughbred so I’ll take any extra thoughts of prayers please! Luckily he’s cute and a nice jumper so he makes up for it 😉

not long until spring- we can do this!!!

Thanks for all the lovely horse pictures, they are all truly beautiful. 😅 at the shitland (agree with pp that we need to see him though). I may need more to truly feel sorry for you all though!

Heaven forbid people moan about anything else 🙄

XelaM · 17/11/2022 09:12

To be fair, some people might not be able to afford to heat their homes/pay the mortgage BECAUSE they own horses 🫠

No, they are the people who agree with you. Don’t post in AIBU if you don’t want truthful responses. Isn’t there a horse topic?

GuyFawkesDay · 17/11/2022 09:15

Oh god I had a Welshite (also not a typo) that despite the M&M easy doer idea got dreadful mudfever despite all best efforts and basically was a huge wimp. He didn't help himself as he liked to destroy rugs.

I remember finding yet another tattered rug in the boggy bottom of the hill end of the field in February in the bitter cold, half frozen mud.

I do NOT miss that. Or tipping over bins full of freezing water with soaked haynets in.

I can dal with winter dog walks but I think unless I could afford at least half livery I wouldn't be getting a horse again!!

k1233 · 17/11/2022 09:15

Some picture tax... pic is of my first horse. I lost him in a bad paddock accident 7years ago 🙁 He was stunning. Spooky as all get out, but stunning.

Yeah exactly that’s my point, so those 76 other people agree with me

The beauty of a website like this is that there is no obligation to read or post on something you’re clearly not happy about

Full sympathies to everyone who has posted pictures of their ridiculously large, beautiful creatures! I’m sat in bed with a coffee, reading mumsnet and feeling very sorry for you. Funny how Riders and Kiss & Tell don’t really go on about the mud and rain.

Agreeing with you is very different to ‘telling it was all tongue in cheek and a bit of fun’. Did you just want to boast on a busy forum about your horses to other horse owners? In which case, that’s what the horse topic is for.

The other interesting feature of this website is that if you post on the busiest forum asking whether you are being unreasonable, you’ll get responses. Not all of which you will like.

PPop · 17/11/2022 09:25

My giant heavy boy who thinks he is a TB is a nightmare this winter so far, he was ill most of the summer, lost weight drastically (he always drops very fast) so I have gone in with a horse that I try to put slightly over slightly under where I want him to be.
He's a dang expensive boy. For the love of a horse right?! Luckily my others are safely at their loaners doing a good job on stud duties!

k1233 · 17/11/2022 09:26

As I say to my mum (who by the way deftly ignored my xmas requests for a pony from when I was 3 yo, meaning I had to buy my first horse by myself when I turned 30...) it's cheaper to have a horse than have kids 🙂 life choices and all that...

I think the most important thing is those of us with horses do find a lot to moan about
Winter is too wet, cold, icy and snowy. Never mind it will soon be Spring

Spring takes too long to arrive. The grass isn’t growing then the grass is growing too fast and my horse is a lunatic or getting laminitis. Competitions are cancelled due to muddy ground It is still wet and cold. Never mind it will soon be Summer

Summer Good it will warm up. It is far too hot My grass has all gone The ground is too hard. It rains and competitions are cancelled due to muddy ground or hard ground The flies are dreadful Never mind it will soon be Autumn

Autumn The grass has a mad growth spurt back to stupid horses and laminitis. Too much or not enough rain. Competitions cancelled. Fed up of grey days and fog and having horse hair everywhere as the moult and you have to clip. Never mind it will soon be Winter

i still have no idea what I would do with my life without the horses

buckingmad · 17/11/2022 06:01

the only thing worse than winter with a horse is winter with a horse on an intensive rehab plan. Send me your prayers

I sympathise. My pony had an itch (which turned out to be terminal cancer) and pushed a fence rail off once, which my horse then trod on and nearly ended up dying from the subsequent foot trauma. It was January and I was trying to keep the pony's tumour site clean and the horse's foot poulticed and wrapped whilst surrounded in eyeball deep mud. Horse is still with us, and we compete at top level now so he came through his rehab ok, despite the mud!

FuckTheCisTerm · 17/11/2022 09:53

Damn it I was just about to post to say someone will be along in a minute to tell you YABU to post about horses as don't you know there is a COL crisis etc etc, but I see they have beaten me to it! FFS Hmm

This is MN. People can talk about whatever the fuck they want without having to worry about being shut down because someone has it worse, in some awful race to the bottom top trumps.

And I don't come a million miles near being able to afford a horse (sadly) I can just about afford my cats Smile I still think people should be able to express annoyance about their pets. Where does it stop - shut up moaning about your cats as I can't afford a gerbil. Or go post on The Litter Tray as you're upsetting people who can't have a cat.

God I'd love a horse. I enjoy hearing about them and seeing the pictures. Ironically it's a distraction from worrying about my bills!

Well I for one am glad that this was posted in aibu because I never look at the horse board and I’ve found this thread thoroughly entertaining.

Not everything has to be about the cost of living crisis. Things are bleak for many at the moment but people are still allowed to discuss other things.

Stickytreacle · 17/11/2022 10:23

I once made the decision to purchase what was cleverly marketed as a Rainbeater Suit. I was determined that that particular winter I would remain dry and warm, and simply hose off any surplus mud.
The suit duly arrived, and I ignored my misgivings that I looked like a giant green condom in it and set off to bring the horses in in torrential rain. It was like wearing a cycle inner tube it was so rubbery.
I set off to the twenty acre field, that also has a huge hill across it with my feed bucket in hand.
Unfortunately the ungrateful beasts heard my squeaking suit, lifted their heads in surprise, and when they saw the giant condom approaching turned into snorting dragons, tails aloft and legged it to the bottom of the hill.
I set off in squeaky pursuit, muttering obscenities. At this point the steam was building up in the suit due to all the exertion.
I made it to the bottom of the hill, for the buggers to then decide this was a cause of great excitement and pretend terror, and race back to the top...... So off I went again.

After several mammoth efforts up and down the hillI, I came to the sad conclusion that I was never going to catch them in my suit, stripped the bloody thing off in the middle of the field and caught the horses. I have never been so wet exhausted and muddy in my life.
Lesson learned that if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is, and if horses can make a fool of you they probably will.

Does every AIBU thread have to be serious, dramatic, doom and gloom? I like it when a lighthearted thread pops up.

Trot on!

Me too. I will never be able to own a horse, but I love hearing about them and seeing them. Just as I enjoy watching Grand Designs, even though I will never be able to embark on such a venture.

Not everything has to be a misery fest on MN. There's enough to be miserable about out in the real world.
