Including me!!!

there should be a specific form of seasonal affected disorder for equestrians in the winter! Or some kind of therapy for helping us deal with the trauma of the winter months!

I posted something about winter 2 months ago but I can’t find it now and I’ve namechanged since then 🤣 just a follow up to that thread!

Why does the winter have to be so cold, wet and awful?! It was quite mild here (Scotland) and all of a sudden about 2 weeks ago it’s suddenly freezing. Everything is wet and muddy, my entire wage is being spent on feeds, shavings and rugs and it’s just generally crap. My hands are like ice cubes, my toes are frozen solid, my arse is freezing in the saddle EVERYTHING is wet and muddy. The other day I slipped on my arse in the field and landed in a big pile of cold, wet, squishy mud. I actually burst into tears- winter has ruined me!

but apart from that it’s great! 🤣 I have a thoroughbred so I’ll take any extra thoughts of prayers please! Luckily he’s cute and a nice jumper so he makes up for it 😉

not long until spring- we can do this!!!

One of my colleagues has a horse. She does not like winter mornings. Can't say I blame her!

XelaM · 16/11/2022 22:44

We have two 😭

This is your old thread btw 😃www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4649810-horsey-people-and-non-horsey-people

6 here, kill me now Confused

Pegsmum · 16/11/2022 22:45

When I’m battling horse flies and the blazing sun and wondering ‘is it too hot for a fly rug?’ I long for the winter 🤣.

Bluelightbaby · 16/11/2022 22:46

Roll on spring and 24/7 turn out lol

karmalama · 16/11/2022 22:48

And my little cob came in today looking like this, it took me an hour and a half to get them out 😢

Yep and it's not even Winter yet!

Manekinek0 · 16/11/2022 22:53

Sometime I miss having a horse but then I remember I don't like being cold or poor.

karmalama · 16/11/2022 22:53

@ahstop
It was close !
Was tempted to get clippers out and hog the little bog monster
Have left feathers for tomorrow, only about ten burrs on each leg 😢

WinterWitchy · 16/11/2022 22:57

I lost my marbles when I bought my second thoroughbred in the summer 🤦‍♀️ The shitland and the highland look after themselves in winter but OMG a spit of rain and the thoroughbreds are at the gate in hysterics. They have a beautiful winter field and have bales of hay in with them but no, they stand at the gate from 1pm and if I dare walk past I’m given the guilt trip. I’m incredibly fortunate that mine are at my house but I hate the mud and the cold. I hate to break this to you OP but we’re not into the worst of the winter yet, wait until the snow comes…😂

My 8 year old rides and is always going on about having a horse one day, I'm going to show her this to put her off because she has no hope of us buying her one!

I sat through a lesson yesterday evening and I was freezing!!

You know you want to…. Our Shetland is 29 and the highland is 31, both were my daughters ponies although horses are hard work and take a lot of commitment unless you have them in full/part or working livery with no mucking out.

exactly the same situation as me! My thoroughbred is still fairly new and I had forgotten how realistic their poordoer reputation is 🤣

I’m in denial about the worst of winter, I keep telling myself it’s just a few more weeks of everything being wet, muddy and freezing and suddenly it will be spring again lol. we’re not even over the peak or the worst of winter yet! 😫

Honestly this!! Turning the horses out in the summer is one of my favourite things to do but it's such a mission in the winter😩.
Fields have mud up to knees etc.. my German shepherds absolutely love winter as they roll in mud which makes it even worse - I'm just glad they live outside as I wouldn't be able to cope with constantly cleaning them after they roll around up the fields.

I really do lose my motivation though over winter, forever looking forward to spring😅

CrotchetyQuaver · 16/11/2022 23:10

It's horrible. Every year I try and do something to make my life easier in winter, some really good, some not so much. Definitely better though than when I took the yard on 11 years ago. Always a work in progress though!

Trying to do some preparations in the summer is well worth trying though.

malificent7 · 16/11/2022 23:15

Yanbu...I could not be a horse owner. My cat is bad enough and I can barely look after myself!

ClaudineClare · 16/11/2022 23:16

I will only feel sorry for people with horses if they post pictures of their horses.

Ha, sounds like me!

The sensible thing is to have a friend with horses - you get the joy of seeing and interacting with them, but none of the work in various weathers.

foxlover47 · 16/11/2022 23:18

I've just moved from
DIY livery to paddocks with my two and I'm loving the no mucking out of the stable so far ...
But the dark , poo picking in the dark , trying to find decent battery lights as I have no electric , walking to the other end of the field for water and it's not even freezing yet !
Also keep seeing glamorous women all around me and thinking if I didn't have horses I'd prob look more "presentable "

Also works for kids, puppies, swimming pools, victorian Manor houses..

ClaudineClare · 16/11/2022 23:19

The shitland

Is that a typo @WinterWitchy ??

Spambod · 16/11/2022 23:26

My theory is that thoroughbreds should be indoor only pets in winter
