Including me!!!

there should be a specific form of seasonal affected disorder for equestrians in the winter! Or some kind of therapy for helping us deal with the trauma of the winter months!

I posted something about winter 2 months ago but I can’t find it now and I’ve namechanged since then 🤣 just a follow up to that thread!

Why does the winter have to be so cold, wet and awful?! It was quite mild here (Scotland) and all of a sudden about 2 weeks ago it’s suddenly freezing. Everything is wet and muddy, my entire wage is being spent on feeds, shavings and rugs and it’s just generally crap. My hands are like ice cubes, my toes are frozen solid, my arse is freezing in the saddle EVERYTHING is wet and muddy. The other day I slipped on my arse in the field and landed in a big pile of cold, wet, squishy mud. I actually burst into tears- winter has ruined me!

but apart from that it’s great! 🤣 I have a thoroughbred so I’ll take any extra thoughts of prayers please! Luckily he’s cute and a nice jumper so he makes up for it 😉

not long until spring- we can do this!!!

BeardyButton totally get what you are saying. They are my go to when life is crap. As my daughter will say, "I need to sniff a pony".

BeardyButton · 22/11/2022 19:03

I ❤️ “I need to sniff a pony”!

MumofHorace · 22/11/2022 20:49

After the hysterical laughter of @ItsRainingCatsAndDogsAgain on p.5 of this thread, I wondered whether my great dream to have A Horse Of My Very Own one day was really a bit mad and if I shouldn’t spend the Horse Fund on something else.

Then I read the rest of the thread and gazed at the photographs and … no. I can’t let go of the dream. It’s like lusting helplessly after a wrong ‘un.

Mollyplop999 · 23/11/2022 06:45

MumofHorace you keep jold of that dream. I was a pony mad child that didn't get near a pony until I was in my 30's. I'm 58 now and still pony mad. I love every minute of it.

KarmaStar · 23/11/2022 21:48

Yanbu....but my dream is to have a horse so I'm actually jealous.🐎

emwithme · 10/12/2022 18:26

This thread has cemented my thoughts that DD (4) will be discouraged from riding. Any time I think "Oooh, it'd be lovely to have a pony" I'll take a bucket, fill it with £50 notes and set fire to it, before dousing myself in water while standing in a freezer.

You forgot while losing your welly in mud while waiting for an out of hours emergency vet visit

Duebug · 10/12/2022 18:45

Or like, don’t have a horse if your going to complain about having a horse? Sure the winters are tough but people are literally unable to feed their families or heat their homes this winter. Honestly one of the most middle class complaints I have heard in my life.

Did you just read the OP and then decide to comment?

Manekinek0 · 16/11/2022 22:53

Sometime I miss having a horse but then I remember I don't like being cold or poor.

Same here.😥

Duebug · 10/12/2022 20:24

That is the generally how one replies to a post yeah. No I haven’t been through all 9 pages of replies, I only read til the 3rd page.
No shame in having horses or hating winter but this seems like a solvable first world problem.

Haha 😂 this is such a great analogy! I absolutely feel like this (we have 2)

honestly why does everything have to be so serious on here? It’s a lighthearted post that everyone else seemed to enjoy 🙄

It’s a joke. Chill out. In fact maybe start horse riding, it might help you relax a bit.

I shuddered reading that, I absolutely hate it when that happens!

not sure what other areas are like but it’s suddenly got very cold over the last week here and it’s officially winter now. Although the only benefit of the sub zero temperatures is the mud is sort of frozen! Hope everyone else is surviving winter so far 🐴👍

In this economy?!?! 😱

Oh go find a pony to sniff. Might help you chill a bit.

Especially in this weather😆

nalabae · 11/12/2022 04:40

It’s a horrible winter. I would prefer a mild summer and mild winter rather than an over hot summer and very cold winter.
Unfortunately I’m not the weather man

Seriously, please stop with the MC stereotype bashing - it really stirs up division that isn’t necessary.

I know a few people that have horses. Their circumstances, financially, are very different.

Some of them get to care for their horses with no worry at all. Others spend their life sacrificing in order to have their horse. For them, their horse is everything.

I get really pissed off that so many on here see that owning a horse immediately labels you as an upperclass idiot. It’s definitely not true.

I actually so much prefer this. Mild usually = wet = hard work and trashed fields. Plus it's important to get a few hard frosts to kill off bacteria in the mud so they don't get mud fever. And also means parasites are less active!!

harrassedmumto3 · 11/12/2022 07:45

You couldn't pay me to do what you ladies do. It amazes me that this is your choice!
I really, really admire your self-discipline though. And although I'm not a horsey person, I'm really enjoying your stories and pics!
Roll on Spring!

Not a very stealthy "I have a horse" boast.
You know some people are struggling to pay rent and buy food, right?
Maybe put your privilege and rich people problems on a lower volume at least for the winter

I didn't realise a gun had been pointed to your head while being forced to scroll and read.

neverbeenskiing · 11/12/2022 08:17

I've really enjoyed reading this thread and seeing pics of all your lovely horses 🙂
But OP, as someone who lives with PTSD, please can I politely ask you not to make comments like this in future?

Or some kind of therapy for helping us deal with the trauma of the winter months!

I know it wasn't intended to be offensive, but my disability isn't a joke.

SmokeyToo · 11/12/2022 08:18

I'm loving this thread! So many hilarious comments, particularly the 100% waterproof green rubber suit - that was brilliant! I feel sorry for those posters who are accusing horse owners of "boasting". What a load of crap! I could never afford a horse (and I feel way too old to be able to do all the work that goes along with them), but I'm having a ball living vicariously through you girls and guys who are lucky enough to own one and remembering my years and years of pining to own a horse when I was much younger.

My brother had a quarter horse years ago in our late teens and although we lived in suburban Sydney, it was at the edge of the urban sprawl and there was a paddock at the end of our street that was available for rent. On the mornings my brother was unable to feed the horse, it fell to me. So, 5.30am, I dragged teenage me out of bed and down to the paddock. Jacob was a beautiful horse (I think he was about 1.5 years old or so), but he was a cheeky sod and always up for a prank or two. In the absolute darkness of his paddock, with the feed and tack shed at the top and a gentle slope down to the other end, I'd get his breakfast ready, my 'terror' escalating with every scoop of grains, molasses, whatever. When I had breakfast done, I'd edge my way out of the shed, knowing what was to come next. "He's out there, but where??" I'd listen for the sound of hoof beats, a gentle neigh, a whicker - anything! Usually, he'd never give himself away, though. So I'd call him, very tentatively...and then it was on! Thundering hooves and in about thirty seconds, the bastard would appear out of the darkness, dead eye on the food bucket, to knock said bucket and me flying if I didn't immediately drop the bucket and hightail it out of his way! He was such a bugger, but I knew he was only playing - the one time he did knock me down, he was much more interested in seeing if I was ok and completely ignored the food bucket until I stood up. And I know he only behaved like this because I didn't stop him from doing it. It was just the early hour and the pitch darkness that messed with my head. If my brother was around, Jacob was "Perfect Horse". My brother is one of those horse-whispery people that all horses adore.

So, enjoy your horses and I know you all consider yourself fortunate to be in such wonderful company. Horses are absolutely some of the most beautiful, sentient and humorous creatures on this planet!

Bunchymcbunchface · 11/12/2022 08:21

And now we have snow! I absolutely hate having horses and snow. It’s just crap absolutely crap.

Astrak · 11/12/2022 08:25

I'm 77 and have had ponies and horses all my life. Currently, I own a tall, opinionated 30 year old Arabian horse.
I have worked hard all my life to keep my animals in safety and comfort. In return, they have given me years of fun, achievement and, inevitably, heartbreak. They are my safe space. My horse is on full livery at a small, specialist yard. He takes up the majority of my work pension, and, occasionally, my State Pension. I don't smoke, drink alcohol, have holidays, new clothes and I drive an antiquated car. I don't begrudge a penny of it. I've had periods of serious (non-horse-related) illness. I've got through it by, metaphorically, hanging on to my horse's mane.
I don't judge other people's life choices. Each to their own.
