….to ask how much a new boiler will cost me?

Dita73 · 14/11/2022 21:03

I apologise for posting in AIBU but I’m in a situation where I need advice pretty quickly.
British Gas have come to my house today and shut down my boiler. I’ve got no heat or hot water. I have someone from British Gas coming on Thursday to give me a quote for a new combi boiler but I have absolutely no idea how much this will be.
Does anyone have a rough idea? I live in a 3 bed semi if that’s any guide. I just need a vague idea of how much I’ve got to find.
Thank you

I just did mine a basic one will be 1500-2000 plus vat

GinUnicorn · 14/11/2022 21:04

I think we paid around 3k a few years back if that helps :(

Vonniee7 · 14/11/2022 21:04

I got one in Feb and it was about 2.5k. I'm in Scotland. Got from a local gas engineer.

Rowthe · 14/11/2022 21:05

I got one a couple.of years ago.

We bought the boiler and got a family friend to install it.
Cost about 1200 all in

CaptaNoctem · 14/11/2022 21:05

Mine cost me £5K but it was a big one and needed to be resited. My parents just paid £3K which was also a re-site but a much simpler one

Make sure you get another quote from a different supplier to compare - British Gas can be at the expensive end of the range

DaisyDoDaisyDont · 14/11/2022 21:06

Ours was £2.5k for a straight swap and another £500 if we wanted to relocate it.

Magicmagician · 14/11/2022 21:06

We paid £2500 (inc VAT) a few months ago, decent make, 10 year guarantee and included smart meter etc

hope you aren’t too cold :(

runforthesun · 14/11/2022 21:08

We've just been quoted £1200.00 including fitting, that's North West.

anon2022anon · 14/11/2022 21:08

£2.5-3.5k, for a local fitter, £4.5+ for british gas I would expect.

DarkAndDusty · 14/11/2022 21:08

Around here it's roughly £4k for the boiler itself plus instal

WordtoYoMumma · 14/11/2022 21:09

About three grand

Magicmagician · 14/11/2022 21:10

anon2022anon · 14/11/2022 21:08

£2.5-3.5k, for a local fitter, £4.5+ for british gas I would expect.

Yep that’s a good point - ours was a local independent gas fitter

Intransigentcat · 14/11/2022 21:10

My standard combi was 1900 from Boxt. straight switch. Easy access. 3 bed semi. No major repiping, no moving the flue. Flue straight out through an external wall.

Used to organise boiler switches when I worked in refurb and the price seems fair.

anon2022anon · 14/11/2022 21:11

@runforthesun that's an amazing price. My partner is a gas fitter, and it cost him that to fit an ideal boiler with 5 year guarantee for us (re siting the boiler so more complicated though). Snap that price up.

saveforthat · 14/11/2022 21:11

Try BOXT You do the whole thing on line and they use local fitters. I used them about 4 years ago and the same boiler was more expensive with BG

purpledagger · 14/11/2022 21:13

We paid about £4500 for a combi boiler with British Gas this spring. The costs included a few optional extras. it was more expensive as we previously had a standard boiler with hot water tank, so more work was involved with replacing the boiler.

British Gas offered us interest free finance, so we paid a certain amount as a deposit and the rest with finance.

BobStrangeNameforaGirl · 14/11/2022 21:13

Another vote for BOXT. Excellent service, competitive price.

ZooTropia · 14/11/2022 21:15

British Gas are robbing bastards. They will quote you about £4k and still say it's a bargain. It's not. Go local and get an independent fitter for a third of the price. Do yourself a favour and look online at prices for your current boiler to get a rough idea of the cost...then add a days rate on

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 14/11/2022 21:16

Another one for Boxt.

Mookie81 · 14/11/2022 21:18

I've got one of those old copper tanks in a cupboard, no timer and just a switch on and off. How much if I took that out and put a new boiler?

amicissimma · 14/11/2022 21:22

We paid £5K. The old one was decades old so there was quite a lot to do, including a condensate pump and new flue arrangements, new controls, electrics and Hive. We got several quotes but only British Gas would just do the above, everyone else wanted to resite it in another room, or change the entire system or offered a really small boiler which I thought might leave us chilly if we needed heating and hot water on a cold day. The other quotes were about the same for something that wasn't quite what we wanted.

I was really impressed with BG. They warned us it could take two days, but sent two guys to do most of the work and specialists came in when necessary to doing building work, or electrics as required and they got it done in one long day. they cleared up beautifully afterwards and took away all the junk from the old system. A few days later the installer returned to adjust something he wasn't entirely happy with.

We're nice and warm now, with plenty of hot water. Though that might change as the price of gas goes up ...

Dita73 · 14/11/2022 21:22

Thank you all so much for replying. I’ve been expecting to pay around £5000 but if we can get it cheaper that will be great. I’ve got to wait until they can come out and give a quote and then I can call around. Luckily we’ve got a couple of electric radiators so it’s not too cold but the water is going to be a nightmare! Thank you again x

We got one last week in North West - Medium fancy combi, 2.5k installed including power flush, smart thermostat and magnet filter. Did 25% down and the rest on 4 year interest free at £30 a month. Old boiler was staggeringly ancient and inefficient so hopefully there will be a nice gas bill saving to offset the installments.

mumda · 14/11/2022 21:27

British gas quoted 4500.
Lovely local gas man quoted 2100. And rings to book the service every year.

OhWifey · 14/11/2022 21:27

Another vote for Boxt. You can go through a quote online right now and probably have your boiler in a couple of days. Found the whole process so easy, a really good price and their customer service was excellent.
