….to ask how much a new boiler will cost me?

Dita73 · 14/11/2022 21:03

I apologise for posting in AIBU but I’m in a situation where I need advice pretty quickly.
British Gas have come to my house today and shut down my boiler. I’ve got no heat or hot water. I have someone from British Gas coming on Thursday to give me a quote for a new combi boiler but I have absolutely no idea how much this will be.
Does anyone have a rough idea? I live in a 3 bed semi if that’s any guide. I just need a vague idea of how much I’ve got to find.
Thank you

We used British Gas and it was so expensive but we paid on 0% finance . If you have the money go local and shop
around . Far cheaper than BG

Merryoldgoat · 14/11/2022 22:05

Do you have a combi now? If so there’s no way it will be £5k - you can get £1500-£2000 for sure.

I have a full change from gravity to combi with some tricky pipe stuff and it was £3.5k a couple of years ago.

Merryoldgoat · 14/11/2022 22:06

Get a recommended local plumber - BG are way too expensive.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 14/11/2022 22:06

We paid £1,600 last year in the NW but a family member did it so charged a bit less for labour. Would have been closer to £2k if not.

ohidoliketobe · 14/11/2022 22:09

Baxi combi. Straightforward swap (same location, no new pipework etc). May 22. North West.
BG quote £4.7k. Local fitter who had serviced old boiler for 8 years and always managed to eek out another year for us £1.8k (5 year warranty).
No interest free credit duration with BG was worth that price jump.

supertedious · 14/11/2022 22:15

We had ours done three years ago by local fitter £2.5K included moving boiler and additional pipe work. It was replacing a 30 year old boiler Shock
A large National company quoted £4K

Snoooozzze · 14/11/2022 22:15

Another happy Boxt customer here!

We paid £2300 Including smart home set up (google nest) installation and annual service subscription in March 2021 and honestly, the service has been brilliant! We ordered on 15th and it was installed and fully set up on 24th (only chose that date due to work location prior to that)

Rainbowcat99 · 14/11/2022 21:52

My £2600 quote was E-on who I'm with for energy. (Worcester boiler)
The £2300 lower one is a local plumber for a Baxi boiler.
Haven't had mine fitted yet though.

@Rainbowcat99 I'd spend the extra & get the Worcester. Their care plan is a good one too!

Rainbowcat99 · 14/11/2022 22:19

@SkylightSkylight would you?
I almost posted on here earlier asking for advice about my own boiler themed dilemma so that's interesting. Thanks!

TheTeddyBears · 14/11/2022 22:19

We got new one 6years ago and we didn't get any quotes under £2K. Central Scotland. We were looking for mid range with gd warranty. Think it was either £2100 or £2200 and it had a 7 year warranty.

@Rainbowcat99 absolutely. Mine is 8 years old now, only intermittently serviced due to covid worry (I know, I know) serviced recently all good. Apparently. But it wasn't working well so they let me sign up to the card plan £17.95 a month covers loads & includes the yearly service, which is more extensive than the local gas safe did.

Worcester is a good brand.

SkylightSkylight · 14/11/2022 22:28

People aren't comparing apples with apples.

brand
quality of parts
warranty- what it covers & for how long.

size of the boiler

LolaO · 14/11/2022 22:30

We got one 2 years ago from Heatable, Wooster Bosch (and filter etc), old one removed new one fitted about £2k all in (fixed price and they did 2 years interest free credit),

twocatsandtwokids · 14/11/2022 22:33

Try Boxt! We had one fitted last week for £3000, quite large 4 bed house.

Hibernationsetting · 14/11/2022 22:39

£4k for an outdoor external oil combi, and reciting the pipe work etc.
Local fitter and superb service.

Dita73 · 15/11/2022 01:32

We already have a combi so there shouldn’t be too much work involved. Thanks again everyone for all your replies and advice. I’m very grateful as I’m completely clueless with this stuff

I got 2 local plumbers quotes 3.6K and other 4.2K (this is to convert regular to combi boiler though). Waiting on British Gas...if similar i am tempted to go with them as they have 5 years interest free finance.

BMW6 · 15/11/2022 22:15

Replaced ours in 2014 supplied and fitted by local company who have been trading over 20 years.

Cost 2.4k, Worcester combi, 25 year guarantee IF serviced annually, which the same company does for £7.99pm.

BG are overpriced and their service charges and service are piss poor (sister has them).

StripyHorse · 15/11/2022 22:44

Dita73 · 14/11/2022 21:49

@Rainbowcat99 @Tiani4 @StripyHorse can I ask who fitted yours? Did you go with British Gas or someone else?

We went with a local plumber who has previously serviced our old boiler / done other work for us. Wanted to stay with him if possible as we know he is trustworthy and does a good job.

DH has corrected me that it was £2800 not £3k.

Ladyofthepeonies · 15/11/2022 22:49

Boxt are great but we ended up using Heatable as they had a bigger selection and the boiler we wanted with 2 years 0%

justasking111 · 15/11/2022 22:52

North Wales last month £2350 Inc fitting for 3 bedroom semi-detached

FangsForTheMemory · 15/11/2022 23:00

Honestly, don’t go to British Gas. They wanted to redo all the pipes and charge me double what I eventually paid. The guy gave me a really hard sell too. I had to listen to him for three hours although I’d told him at the start I was getting several quotes. Get on your local Facebook group and ask for recommendations.

MyBuggyIsOutToGetMe · 15/11/2022 23:06

Definitely get local plumber quotes. I’ve replaced two boilers in different properties - the first I had British Gas quote and they wanted about 50% more than a local plumber.

We paid just over £4K in early 2020 to replace a boiler with a hot water tank with a new combi, but also replaced most of the radiators. 3 bed semi in SE England.
