AIBU to think that people who put Christmas decorations up super early are just attention seekers?

My neighbour has had her house decorated fully for Christmas now for almost two weeks- they started going up on Oct 31st. Fully lit tree in the window, outdoor lights, Christmas wreath on the door- the works.

She’s done this since she moved next door to me five years ago and I assume she did it before that too.

Since I’ve known her, she’s also posted on Insta and her WhatsApp status each year on either Christmas Day or the 26th to show her decorations coming down and a general “I can’t spend another minute looking at them” message.

If she put them up at Christmas and not at Halloween, she wouldn’t be looking at them for all that long.

She’s one of these “I’m daft me” types.

I know there are some exceptions where decorations are put up for different reasons like someone with a terminal illness, a family celebrating early before someone emigrates etc. but those are rare so I’m not factoring then into my thoughts around this.

Am I being unreasonable for thinking that someone who put Christmas decorations up at the end of Oct/early Nov is attention-seeking?

I don't put my decorations up early but I quite like it when other people do. It's so dark and dreary at this time of year, it's nice to see twinkling lights as you walk down the road.

I think some people just like the cheer during these dark nights, so it doesn't bother me

I am a bit sniffy about people who rip it all down on Boxing Day though - no idea why it just irks me!

Me too. 12th night mateys. It's not hard

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 11/11/2022 17:31

My friend puts hers up straight after Halloween, she's not a show off or attention seeker, her son is severely disabled and partially sighted and it brings him great joy

starpatch · 11/11/2022 17:33

Sorry I think you are being a bit harsh. In some communities it’s a bit ‘ everyone has to behave the same and if you don’t you are criticised’ I don’t like it I think people should be allowed to do their own thing.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/11/2022 17:35

Nothing wrong with that.
I'm looking forward to the Easter Eggs, they should be out soon.

Travis1 · 11/11/2022 17:38

I took my decorations out the loft today and will start putting them up probably on Sunday. It will be staggered over the next week or so. No I’m not attention seeking. I give no fucks whether anyone else likes it or not. For me there is nothing better than chilling on the couch with my blanket, the tree lights lit and all my tea lights. It brings my joy and I take all the joy I can get it because otherwise I spend my time in a depressive bubble doing nothing

Mentalpiece · 11/11/2022 17:44

My neighbour put hers up on the 1st November. Christmas tree up, fairy lights all over the windows etc.
Which makes me laugh because she's still got her Halloween decorations up outside, complete with pumpkins on her doorstep.
She can't seem to make her mind up what occasion she should be decorating for.

hopeishere · 11/11/2022 17:49

I agree about delayed gratification. Also all the influencers who have to decorate so they can seek you stuff!!

For me too early spoils Christmas.

Sux2buthen · 11/11/2022 17:49

I put them up early because I like them and my children like them. They make us happy

No, I don't think people who use outdoor Christmas lights are being snobs. They are just enjoying Christmas, and why should they stop just because some people can't afford them? These arguments are just another way for mumsnetters to get on their judgemental high horse. We've already had similar threads with people claiming that no one should wear designer clothes or pandora bracelets to work because it rubs it in the faces of people who can't afford it. Maybe was should stop going on holidays abroad because people can't afford it? Or stop going out to theatres/cinemas/pubs because some people can't afford it.

I wasn’t clear in my post. I don’t think people who have their Xmas decorations out early snobs. I’m calling the people who think it is tacky and attention seeking snobbish. People can do what they want but it’s judgement of people that doesn’t sit right with me. If it makes people happy good but if it makes people who are struggling feel bad then that doesn’t sit right. I love Christmas decs. Again I wasn’t clear in my post. Just hate judgement of people doing something innocent.

Feysriana · 11/11/2022 17:51

I love the twinkly fairy lights in people’s trees, they can keep them there all year long!!

Not loving the giant inflatable reindeer / giant santa wiggling his ass on the side of a wall. Whether October or December I will sneer a little at that.

I don’t really judge people putting them up early, I assume they’re just super excited about Christmas and its nice to look forward to it.

Ladameauchapeaujaune · 11/11/2022 17:51

I love Christmas and love the build up, my decorations are up now and I've already put on a couple of my favourite xmas songs. It makes me and my husband happy and neither of us get sick of it. Last year we left them up until the end of January, now that was a bit much I do admit 😂

Sparklesocks · 11/11/2022 17:52

I love Christmas but I get festive fatigue and can’t put up any decs/do anything xmassy before 1st Dec because I don’t want to get sick of it before it even starts. It feels ‘wrong’ to have the tree up any sooner. But if it makes others happier then they should go for it.

User2145738790 · 11/11/2022 15:25

If she didn't put her decorations up early what would you find to be a snob about?

This.

Why does it matter? Its pretty attention seeking to be posting about it, isn't it?

palygold · 11/11/2022 17:55

I think they're just extremely childish, can't wait and want instant gratification.

They'll have them up in November and down on Boxing Day as they're bored, having had them up for two months, and they're covered in dust (probably).

mathanxiety · 11/11/2022 18:10

I just think these people must have really empty lives. Its really sad how excited people get about it.

I think it's really sad how exercised some people get about the perfectly innocuous choices others make.

RampantIvy · 11/11/2022 18:13

I agree @mathanxiety. It doesn't affect anyone else. It isn't for me, but I can't get worked up about this harmless activity.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 11/11/2022 18:14

StrokeAllDogsandCats · 11/11/2022 16:34

That’s a good point. I think most people would use this as an excuse to be snobs. It is rubbing how comfortable you are in peoples faces. Horrible all round. Maybe more subtle Xmas decorations or ones that do not use electricity.

Absolute nonsense
I've costed it up and running a few strings of leds will cost pennies quite frankly
I'll be putting mine out as usual with no agenda at all except to be festive.

I tend to think most people are capable of any kind of arseholery, but even I would not ascribe such a motive to a few (or even a lot of) outdoor Christmas lights.

My neighbours across the road put up a big inflatable Father Christmas a few years ago which kept bobbing up and down behind a handy shrub in the wind. It was the most unintentionally hilarious Christmas decoration ever and gave our whole family endless joy all season. 😂

pumpkinelvis · 11/11/2022 18:20

I'm not attention seeking but I love Xmas and have the house all lit up. I will put it up the last weekend in November. Nobody really sees my house (it's set back from the road) so it's for mine and dc enjoyment :-)

Mommabear20 · 11/11/2022 18:21

Nope! We just love Christmas! We'll be putting ours up in the next week or so! DC love the bright lights and baubles 🥰

Twinkling lights in trees is one thing, and I could tolerate those all year round. Giant Christmas inflatables sound horrific! Not even at a safe distance across the road!

Fattoushi · 11/11/2022 16:35

I just think these people must have really empty lives. Its really sad how excited people get about it. And decorating so early takes all the specialness out of the Xmas season, its like a guest that has long overstayed their welcome.

So its "sad" to be excited about Christmas?
You sound nice. Confused

Normally I would agree with you. I would never have one myself but it was just so funny we totally forgave them.

Some people just want to make the Christmas period last as long as possible. I've already started watching Xmas music and watching Xmas films.

Grumpy old women at Christmas comes out every end of October I love it.
