I get the message behind it but I hated it. Not at all Christmassy, hated the song, hated the aesthetic, just don’t know what they were thinking?

Not seen it. When was it on? What's it about?

a guy learning to skateboard as they’re fostering a child who likes skateboarding.
it’s to support children in the care system. Which is a lovely cause, but the message could have been portrayed with a christmas story surely?

Watched it earlier. Agree with the music, definitely not a catchy tune

I don't like it either, i like the jolly adverts, I liked the Monty penguin best

I love the holly ones too…Asda’s buddy the elf is my winner so far this year!
I don’t mind a bit of sentimental, but it has to feel festive!

Gonna have a gander now. Thanks @Peashoots Smile

PurpleButterflyWings · 10/11/2022 21:14

@Peashoots I agree the ELF one is ace!

redredwineub40 · 10/11/2022 21:15

I guess they're thinking a lot of people can't face Christmas this year - I liked it.
Sometimes it's ok to scale things back.

Catagonia · 10/11/2022 21:15

The song can fuck off. Imagine doing that to All the Small Things.

But I liked the advert apart from that. Fostering is an issue close to my heart.

TortusMaximus · 10/11/2022 21:16

Disagree. Moving kids into care at Christmas time is bittersweet - I’ve done it myself as a social worker. This is a real thing happening to real children, children who are often not represented. This advert is about making a family however you can, and that’s what Christmas is about. I thought it was beautiful and moving.

PurpleButterflyWings · 10/11/2022 21:17

Meh, don't love it, don't hate it. It's all right. 😕

Facecream · 10/11/2022 21:17

It is festive!! It’s clearly about Christmas and people sharing that together for the first time..?

Dreikanter · 10/11/2022 21:20

I liked it. No over the top schmaltz for a change. No conspicuous consumption. And highlights the need for more people willing to think about being foster parents.

MrPoppysParka · 10/11/2022 21:20

I don’t get the Asda love. It’s just scenes from the existing film pasted into an Asda!

AthenaPopodopolous · 10/11/2022 21:25

I think it’s wonderful and makes me think of the people out there who take foster children into their homes at at time of year which can be really difficult for many. U think it’s really lovely actually. Good for John Lewis.

Clymene · 10/11/2022 21:26

I really like it. It's what Christmas should be about

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 10/11/2022 21:32

I think it's inappropriate, as though JL are saying 'look at how much we give to charity'! And using that to promote their business.

Loopyloooooo · 10/11/2022 21:34

It's what Christmas should be about. Lovely and so good to see children in the care system shown realistically and not in a "little orphan Annie or Tracey Beaker" way. I think the problem is people like to forget that this is reality for so many kids and their families. Kids at your kids school, kids down the road etc...real life.

UnstableCarHouse · 10/11/2022 21:35

I really like it and I do like that version of the song.

QuizzlyBears · 10/11/2022 21:35

I like it. I think the message is important and I think we can all do with a reminder now and then about how the small things matter.

DontSpeakLatinInFrontOfTheBooks · 10/11/2022 21:36

The music was a bit… wtf. Wasn’t expecting that at all.

The advert was lovely though, IMO. I was a little bit teary eyed at the “story”, it was simple and no, it’s not Christmassy in the traditional sense but I think it’s one of their better ones.

FilthyforFirth · 10/11/2022 21:36

I loved it. Have watched it 3 times and cried each time. But its great. Better than the monster under the bed or the dog on the trampoline.

Completely agree, I don’t get why people love it so much? It seems really lazy to me.

Agreed. It's an important message. My uncle grew up in care through no fault of his own.

Jimmini · 10/11/2022 21:38

For me the song worked when puddles first did it, as the character offset the tone and added relief, in the context of the ad it is too
