I get the message behind it but I hated it. Not at all Christmassy, hated the song, hated the aesthetic, just don’t know what they were thinking?

Asda advert is pants, don’t see the hype at all and I do enjoy Elf. I really like the Sainsbury’s advert- I think it’s the medieval Teenage Dirtbag rendition that gets me.
John Lewis advert is sweet, but not what I was expecting given previous years. McDonalds advert made me tear up this year. Ultimate winner may be the Disney advert this year though! (Can you tell I’m a complete Christmas advert lover loser) 😂

I’m not against the message at all, obviously!!
I just didn’t like the advert, found it boring, agree with some PPs it simplifies the situation and feel there were better ways to portray the message.
and no, it didn’t feel very Christmassy.

I agree with some PPs though that if it encourages people to foster or donate to charity then that’s brilliant.

it didn’t feel very Christmassy

Which Christmas are you? Past, present or future?

I know which one I am.

happyfishcoco · 10/11/2022 22:02

I agree, the JL ad is not Christmassy,
but the song is ok.
and the message behind is quite warm.
so I won't hate it.

asda is not aesthetic at all, but it is very Christmassy.

JL Ad got 1.2M views in 13 hours,

have you seen the boots ad? 66% dislike tho.
maybe it is something you like?

I liked Sainsburys too!

I think it's lovely and really moving. The music is not really grabbing me but that doesn't matter, it's the visuals that matter.

As someone who has experience of the Care system, it made me cry. I am delighted that such an annually anticipated advert has raised the issue of care and fostering.

I hope it massively boosts John Lewis’ profits - so much so that other stores/companies follow suit next year.

This.

Hadnt seen the boots one and just watched now. I do like it actually 😂 not my favourite though.

I think the best JL advert was the man in the moon. Had me crying buckets each time I watched, though.

It's my favourite yet! Love it

LindseyHoyleSpeaks · 10/11/2022 22:08

I liked it. Won’t inspire me to shop at JL though as their customer service has gone to shit!

justasking111 · 10/11/2022 22:08

I like ads to be about caring so it's good in that sense.

Having trawled through a few this evening I like this one

ghostyslovesheets · 10/11/2022 22:10

I like it - I like the song just because my ex used to call DD1 'my little windmill' when she was a baby and used to wave her arms around

and it's nice to see care experienced kids and young people acknowledged - JL may be blowing their own trumpet but it's a good trumpet - and ALL adverts are promoting the company - that's the point.

pappajonessecretchild · 10/11/2022 22:11

I like it. This year is not about how much food you can get on the table or how big your tree is. I have friends who work in fostering, anything that promotes awareness gets my vote. But also I do feel it is about christmas. it reminds me the inn keeper saying yes when there was no room at the inn. Alot of families this year are struggling. I dont need to see advert after advert of laden tables of food, people have taken in families from ukraine this year, the christmas story is about mary and joseph struggling to find someone taking them in when they are in a diffent town, this advert is about a family taking in a child. I see the link.

Peashoots · 10/11/2022 21:56

I don’t think anyone actually thinks that.
why name call? No need really is there.

Anyone who thinks it’s new footage is a numpty and I stand by it. Hardly name calling, not like I dropped the C-bomb.

NerrSnerr · 10/11/2022 22:12

I don't see how it isn't Christmassy? Surely the whole point of the nativity is about the kindness of the innkeeper taking Mary and Joseph in?

I also don't think that it suggests that someone learning a bit of skateboarding would make the fostering of a teenager a rosy experience. I think it shows that the foster parents know it's going to be tough so are trying to do anything to make a connection.

Hullabalooza · 10/11/2022 22:12

I don’t see anything wrong with a company using their platform to raise awareness of an issue in society, and the amount of children and young people in need of a safe place to live through care and fostering is a very big issue at the moment.

I think it’s a bit entitled to say that you don’t like the advert because it’s not Christmassy enough for your tastes, we are living in difficult times and good on John Lewis for raising the profile of this particular issue.

Yes they are a big company from whom there is huge expectations around their Xmas advert. So surely it's a good thing that they've chosen to do it this way? Especially this year.

yes!! this is very lovely. I hope more big big companies do this way.
rather than promote their product in Xmas ads.

I agree, sounds like a lot of people are missing the point

I thought it was thought provoking and very moving.

Im not familiar with the sing though.

But I’m sure anybody who’s seen the film DOESNT think it’s new footage? Nobody I know IRL thinks this.

JL are saying 'look at how much we give to charity'! And using that to promote their business.

A win-win, as it should be.

Just watched it. I agree with you @Peashoots This isn't a "Christmas" ad for me. I didn't like the song and the advert is a bit "meh"

Yes there's a lovely point about fostering in there and building relationships and of course that's important. But the JL Christmas ads for me are about watching a cute penguin and his boy go on a journey. I don't want a heavy message rammed down my throat

Appreciate some will think this sounds heartless and it absolutely isn't. I just don't think JL Xmas ads are the place for this type of message when people need a bit of lightheartedness (and look forward to it).
