I get the message behind it but I hated it. Not at all Christmassy, hated the song, hated the aesthetic, just don’t know what they were thinking?

dour…
autocorrect didn’t like and missed a word

Ilikewinter · 10/11/2022 21:39

Nope not for me, didnt tug on my heart strings.
Its Kevin the carrot all the way for me!

VollywoodHampires · 10/11/2022 21:41

Bloody awful

Drifting · 10/11/2022 21:42

It simplifies fostering when in reality it is often very difficult for both the children and the foster carers involved, so I don’t like it for that reason.

Lidl bear is cute and Aldi’s is funny, 2 supermarkets I never shop at though.

RoseGoldEagle · 10/11/2022 21:43

I really liked it!

Stationsofthecross · 10/11/2022 21:43

I thought it was amazing 👏🏻😭 - not fussed about the song and how they changed it - but overall one of their better ones.

BadNomad · 10/11/2022 21:44

If it was by a charity, I might like it. But, it's just manipulation by a large retail chain who will make money off people's emotions.

AloysiusBear · 10/11/2022 21:45

This is a real thing happening to real children, children who are often not represented. This advert is about making a family however you can, and that’s what Christmas is about. I thought it was beautiful and moving.

This. It made me cry. It wasnt about consumption. It was about welcoming people in and being there for family at this time of year. I thought it was great.

golddustwomen · 10/11/2022 21:47

@Catagonia my thoughts exactly! The bastards!

I agree, sounds like a lot of people are missing the point

The song can fuck off. Imagine doing that to All the Small Things.

But I liked the advert apart from that. Fostering is an issue close to my heart.

Agreed

Oysterbabe · 10/11/2022 21:51

I like it.

Byelaws · 10/11/2022 21:51

Love it. Definitely made me cry and think.

They’ve nailed it. Christmas isn’t perfect but it is positive.

I think it's inappropriate, as though JL are saying 'look at how much we give to charity'! And using that to promote their business.

Yes they are a big company from whom there is huge expectations around their Xmas advert. So surely it's a good thing that they've chosen to do it this way? Especially this year.

AloysiusBear · 10/11/2022 21:52

It encouraged me to go and donate to Action for Children too, so that's no bad thing.

user1471530109 · 10/11/2022 21:52

Bloody hell. Some of you have a heart of stone!

I'm currently dealing with a similar situation at work and shed many tears at home after a tough day. This advert has properly made me well up. This poor kids living this reality. Christmas is a big deal. The young girl I'm working with repeatedly mentions what Christmas will be like this year.

Well done John Lewis.

WhatTheFlap · 10/11/2022 21:36

Completely agree, I don’t get why people love it so much? It seems really lazy to me.

The best bit about it is all the numpties who think that it’s new footage and doesn’t realise it’s just old clips from the film pasted together

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 10/11/2022 21:55

Didn't like the song but I thought the advert was really good
Its like JL have made up for that tone deaf Elton John Christmas ad,

My favourite JL Christmas ads are The Hare & Bear & The Penguin & Boy one both still make me well up

I don’t think anyone actually thinks that.

Disagree. Moving kids into care at Christmas time is bittersweet - I’ve done it myself as a social worker. This is a real thing happening to real children, children who are often not represented. This advert is about making a family however you can, and that’s what Christmas is about. I thought it was beautiful and moving.

As someone who has experience of the Care system, it made me cry. I am delighted that such an annually anticipated advert has raised the issue of care and fostering.

I hope it massively boosts John Lewis’ profits - so much so that other stores/companies follow suit next year.

Peashoots · 10/11/2022 21:58

I’m not against the message at all, obviously!!
I just didn’t like the advert, found it boring, agree with some PPs it simplifies the situation and feel there were better ways to portray the message.
and no, it didn’t feel very Christmassy.

I agree with some PPs though that if it encourages people to foster or donate to charity then that’s brilliant.

I don’t get the Asda love. It’s just scenes from the existing film pasted into an Asda!

This x 100

Meant to say I agreed with the quoted post…

MaybeNotThisYear · 10/11/2022 21:59

I liked it, I thought it was sweet and it made me think more about the point of Christmas, it actually didn't feel manipulative (any more than any advertising does), it was a story and a sentiment anyone could relate to (if they wanted to) - You don't have to shop at John Lewis to get it.

Doesn't beat Justino though, my favourite Christmas advert!
