To not give out sweets when it isn't Halloween?

I posted this exact post on 'breastfeeding yummy mummies' so interesting to see if the MN response differs generally...

I had a woman knock at 7pm tonight with her DD and two DS's.

I answered and the children said 'trick or treat Smile'

I said that's lovely! (And in my head thought I got the date wrong!) but I then said sorry, no sweets tonight. Nothing in

They all went 'owwll Sad' at the same time. The mum turned her eyebrow up at me! I said I really am sorry

She said 'I've taken them tonight because im working Monday. Not everyone can do it on the exact day! It's nice to be inclusive'

She then told the kids to leave me to it, and she knocked next door

AIBU to think it's bonkers to trick or treat on a different day?! I know she's working but that's just tough....

“It’s nice to be inclusive”

Translation: pander to my way of doing things or you’re A BIG BAD MEANIE.

She’s a loon, OP.

Castaspell · 28/10/2022 19:50

Thats unusual isn't it. Around here, children know to only go to houses with Halloween decorations out, and only on Halloween. I wouldn't have anything ready either.

1dontunderstand · 28/10/2022 19:50

Some people are bonkers! Who goes trick or treating when it’s not Halloween?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 28/10/2022 19:51

I 100% agree with you.

She is absurd.

Hoppinggreen · 28/10/2022 19:51

It’s between the hours of 5 (when I light the pumpkins) and 8 here on 31st and that’s it
I have only had to turn people away twice but I will again if necessary

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 28/10/2022 19:51

Daft mare!

chancerane · 28/10/2022 19:52

Thank you Smile

The Facebook group was a different response - most people saying I could've just been kind and telling me to 'act with kindness' Halloween Grin

Crazy. I wouldn't of even answered the door.

Pootles34 · 28/10/2022 19:52

Fruit loop. She shouldn't be knocking if you haven't got a pumpkin out either!

YANBU.....its one of the reasons some people really start to resent Halloween. People knocking for a few nights before the actual even "just because" (there's always an excuse)!

If they genuinely couldn't go out on Monday then it's the parents responsibility to reach out to neighbours or friends and ask if they'd mind a knock at x time on y date because of z reason and then you call round those few houses who are expecting you.

Alternatively you unfortunately miss trick or treating this year.

Whinge · 28/10/2022 19:53

I have sweets in ready and still wouldn't have given them anything.

Halloween is the 31st October. I'm sorry she's working but surely someone is looking after the children on the 31st, and they can take them out trick or treating.

StoneofDestiny · 28/10/2022 19:54

She is rude and inconsiderate. I detest the way Halloween has become (so American). I hope this year people only go to those with lit pumpkins outside - too many elderly and night shift workers are disturbed by roaming parents and kids knocking doors all night, or indeed people who just don't want to be disturbed all night by other peoples offspring.
Im sure if they tried parents could organise a local Halloween Party for all the kids and parents who want one.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 28/10/2022 19:55

You can hardly ‘act with kindness’ if you don’t have any sweets in.

Are you going to hand out OXO cubes instead?

FionnulaTheCooler · 28/10/2022 19:57

I've just had a guiser at the door, had to run and get the sweets from the garage where I'd stashed them. I don't mind wee ones doing it tonight or tomorrow so it's not a school night, I had the sweets in ready so didn't have the heart to turn her away.

I do actually have some sweets in to be fair Grin

Hmm I think if you have a pumpkin out it's fair game! I'll be picking our pumpkins tomorrow and getting them out hopefully as I'm thinking younger kids may be coming Sat and Sun. We'll be out on Monday.

Yes the chancer don't feel bad 😞 there's some wandering round here but all out lights are off and will be tomorrow until Monday night

I like this idea.

Round our way people have had decorations up for weeks. That doesn't mean people have been trick or treating for the last 2 weeks. It's like Christmas, people often decorate before the day but it's still only Christmas day on the 25th. Smile

Derbee · 28/10/2022 20:04

I’d have told her she made a great witch 😂

AmyandPhilipfan · 28/10/2022 20:08

I remember last year someone asked in a local FB group if they could take kids trick or treating on the day before Halloween. They did get a few 'yeah take them when's convenient for you hun' answers but the majority told them they were being daft even thinking about it. I'm not that keen on Trick or Treating at the best of times but I think most people can tolerate it for one night - it's madness to do it on multiple dates!

ClocksGoingBackwards · 28/10/2022 20:09

She’s crazy to expect complete strangers to participate in ToT on the wrong date. It’s like having your Turkey on Christmas Eve Eve and then complaining that the King’s Christmas message isn’t on telly.

Wannabegreenfingers · 28/10/2022 20:10

She was being ridiculous. Halloween is the 31st. No other day.

Barbie222 · 28/10/2022 20:10

That's crackers. Lots of people won't have their sweets in yet. She'll only do that once!
