To not give out sweets when it isn't Halloween?

I posted this exact post on 'breastfeeding yummy mummies' so interesting to see if the MN response differs generally...

I had a woman knock at 7pm tonight with her DD and two DS's.

I answered and the children said 'trick or treat Smile'

I said that's lovely! (And in my head thought I got the date wrong!) but I then said sorry, no sweets tonight. Nothing in

They all went 'owwll Sad' at the same time. The mum turned her eyebrow up at me! I said I really am sorry

She said 'I've taken them tonight because im working Monday. Not everyone can do it on the exact day! It's nice to be inclusive'

She then told the kids to leave me to it, and she knocked next door

AIBU to think it's bonkers to trick or treat on a different day?! I know she's working but that's just tough....

If I didn't have any sweets in the house then they would have been out of luck by being early - but if I did then they could have them. What does it actually matter?

BibiBlocksberg · 28/10/2022 20:57

‘Workzilla’ at it again? :) :)

Well its a one night only thing isnt it how can you be inclusive with no stuff in ,we had this once i do normslly join in and give out sweets on halloween but one boy turned up the day before i told him to come back the next day

I saw four children out in costume before it even got dark this evening. Nope, Hallowe'en is Monday. Same as Christmas is 25 December.

If that applies to Halloween why not say the same about Christmas?

You have the presents in the house before Christmas day, so what does it actually matter if you give them out early. Grin

This didn't happen and I could have told you that as soon and OP mentioned the breastfeeding yummy mummies facebook group. Yawn. Try harder.

I wouldn't give out sweets either. Has to be the day, can't be a random day just because. One evening a year of being disturbed and handing out sweets, but no more than that. Yanbu

We had this a while ago a mum knocked with her little one and the only thing I had in the house was the last chocolate digestive biscuit. I was mortified. We have sweets in early since then. I wouldn't be expecting anyone until Halloween night but I also wouldn't turn a child away empty handed if I knew I had sweets in the house either.

If you're a part of the group, look at recent posts! It's there

Youdoyoutoday · 28/10/2022 21:37

I'd expect it tomorrow but not tonight.

OzziePopPop · 28/10/2022 21:39

Honestly I was half expecting one or two tonight. Certainly expecting some tomorrow night… I have pumpkins out (well the kids do!) and sweets will be available now until Monday night 9pm. That’s late enough. I can understand doing it a day or two early so it’s not a school night but did think tonight was a bit soon!

still, inclusive is surely… going to the end of your gravel driveway so the kid on crutches or with a wheelchair doesn’t miss out? Not doing whatever anyone fancies?!?

Namechanger965 · 28/10/2022 21:42

YANBU. It’s still a good few days away yet! Although we are going on Sunday as otherwise I’d have to be out in the evening with a 5, 2 and 1 year old on my own as DH is working. But we’re only going to families houses so a bit different.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 28/10/2022 21:49

Nope. Only on actual Halloween day. No other day at all. Doesn't matter if its a school night, parents working, any other CF excuse they come up, trick or treating is a one day event.

OneBiscuitAtATime · 28/10/2022 21:54

YANBU unless you are in Kilmarnock in Ayrshire. They go guising on the last Friday in October, but the rest of Scotland thinks they are a bit weird.

bewarethetides · 28/10/2022 22:24

Halloween is the 31st. That is the only day I'm handing out sweets or letting my own children go out trick or treating. If I couldn't take them when they were younger, I would have arranged for them to go with someone else.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 28/10/2022 22:37

That’s so odd! In my area TorT happens in the late afternoon/ evening on Halloween OR some cities have designated hours the weekend before Halloween OR some neighborhoods have TorT on their own day if they don’t like the city hours or don’t want it on a weekday.

The key is that it’s advertised and announced. I did find it odd when I first moved to the area, but as an adult I kind of appreciate it. I would have hated having designated times (not on Halloween night) as a kid.

It sounds more confusing than it actually is. I do feel bad for the kids that come around during the city times, not knowing that the neighborhood has had theirs the day before. It’s maybe 1 or 2 kids. I always keep extra candy just in case. But yeah if some random kids just show up at any other time I won’t have anything for you, and would link your parent nuts for expecting me to.

RedSoloCup · 28/10/2022 22:53

There was a post on our village fb group last year as halloween was a Sunday about doing the Saturday night instead and it was a resounding no!,

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 28/10/2022 22:55

YANBU. I'm in NI where Halloween is apparently much bigger than in England (source: English friends who have moved over), and here we don't tend to have kids out before Halloween, but if we do they understand they may not get sweets!
