To not give out sweets when it isn't Halloween?

I posted this exact post on 'breastfeeding yummy mummies' so interesting to see if the MN response differs generally...

I had a woman knock at 7pm tonight with her DD and two DS's.

I answered and the children said 'trick or treat Smile'

I said that's lovely! (And in my head thought I got the date wrong!) but I then said sorry, no sweets tonight. Nothing in

They all went 'owwll Sad' at the same time. The mum turned her eyebrow up at me! I said I really am sorry

She said 'I've taken them tonight because im working Monday. Not everyone can do it on the exact day! It's nice to be inclusive'

She then told the kids to leave me to it, and she knocked next door

AIBU to think it's bonkers to trick or treat on a different day?! I know she's working but that's just tough....

You can hardly ‘act with kindness’ if you don’t have any sweets in.

Are you going to hand out OXO cubes instead?

It would have been tempting to give oxo cubes out or a carrot or whatever else you had lurking round!!

RaininSummer · 28/10/2022 20:14

4 days early is very odd. Sunday might just about be ok.

Annabananna1 · 28/10/2022 20:15

31st only !! And from dark till 7.30 / 8.

Favouritefruits · 28/10/2022 20:15

Most people won’t have bought sweeties or chocolates yet, I understand her kids would be disappointed they shouldn’t go tick or treating days before hand.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 28/10/2022 20:16

That's ridiculous. I wouldn't have had anything to give kids, I was planning on picking sweets up this weekend 🤷🏻‍♀️ It sucks if she's working but that's the way it is, can't expect random people to get sweets in earlier on the off chance of strangers knocking at their door for them.

Favouritefruits · 28/10/2022 20:17

@Annabananna1 7.30/8 is a bit late, lots of young children are asleep by then I and I wouldn’t want to wake them up, it’s 5.30- 6.00 around here.

Hugasauras · 28/10/2022 20:18

I haven't bought ours yet so anyone knocking tonight would be lucky to get a satsuma!

Floralnomad · 28/10/2022 20:19

Trick or treating night is the 31st , whether people have decorated before is irrelevant , it’s no different to decorating before Christmas - you still don’t do the presents until the actual day(s) .

Hmm I think if you have a pumpkin out it's fair game! I'll be picking our pumpkins tomorrow and getting them out hopefully as I'm thinking younger kids may be coming Sat and Sun. We'll be out on Monday.

It's not fair game to knock on the wrong day, that just daft. Halloween is a one date only event for the trick or treating. People decorate their house for days beforhand but no one thinks that means you can knock for sweets 😂

woodhill · 28/10/2022 20:20

Yanbu

How rude of her

I like this idea.

It's brilliant

Annabananna1 · 28/10/2022 20:21

Yes we start about 5.30 but I am happy to open the door till 8. Mine will be as high as kites on sugar anyway Grin

VestaTilley · 28/10/2022 20:21

What a CF!! You’re politer than me, OP. I’d have shut the door on her.

A580Hojas · 28/10/2022 20:24

Didn't really happen did it OP?

JLQ1020 · 28/10/2022 20:24

This happened me a few years ago I had nothing in and gave an apple and was forever known as the house that gives fruit so ppl didn't come anymore.
Gutted as I buy in loads of sweets now each year so I'm not caught out but end up eating them all.

peoniesarejustperfect · 28/10/2022 20:26

Sorry to chime against the grain but I don’t think it’s a problem - either for her to knock or you not to have anything. We’re ready, had a couple of callers tonight. We’re going out tomorrow with some friends from our town. It suits us better than Monday night. We’ve planned ahead with our neighbours and will prob only knock if people have a pumpkin out. Not everyone’s lives fit into 31/10 boxes.

I've had it hapoen before! When I pointed out they were a whole week early, the little girl said "I'm at my dad's next weekend" as if she was actually doing me a favour.....

Rude. I've never once posted on Twitter and I don't have an account. What do you mean?

SpookyPanda · 28/10/2022 20:38

Oysterbabe · 28/10/2022 20:02

I like this idea.

That's pretty much what we do but with out the rude sign.

My thoughts exactly.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 28/10/2022 20:43

I got my arse handed to me on here as a young mum, asking if it was ok to take the DC out before Halloween, as, like now, it didn't fall on half term and I didn't want them having a late night.

The answer was a definitive NO!! 😆

OneFrenchEgg · 28/10/2022 20:43

Having seen our local Facebook groups I'm going to get dc to make a sign saying 'small spooky creatures welcome on Monday' and laminate it for outside

LoveLarry · 28/10/2022 20:44

chancerane · 28/10/2022 19:52

Thank you Smile

The Facebook group was a different response - most people saying I could've just been kind and telling me to 'act with kindness' Halloween Grin

If the Facebook group is really called "breast feeding yummy mummies" then I wouldn't give their responses any credence

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 28/10/2022 20:52

What a CF! I’d have given fruit 😁
