To ask what wine drinkers switch to when pregnant?

I am pregnant with a very much wanted baby and over the moon about it.

It feels like a stupid thing to be thinking about, but a large glass of crisp cool white wine was one of the joys of Friday for me. If possible, I’d love to have some sort of substitute.

So, if anyone else is or has been in the same boat, would you please share your non-alcoholic beverages of choice? Nothing sweet, fruity or fizzy, please. Thank you!

Alcohol free Martini is surprisingly nice when mixed with lemonade or tonic.

Mamma80 · 21/10/2022 16:29

Willpower and rocking silently did it for me....

On a more serious note... non alcholic versions have moved on in the last 7 years. Aldi Nosecco is very good. I also had fruit ciders this summer which you wouldnt actually tell were non alcoholic.

Good luck! Xx

I allowed myself wine but found I didn’t have the taste for it, so o e or two sips left me satisfied.

My drink of choice varied by trimester: homemade lemonade, fresh orange juice, ‘proper’ chocolate milkshake , and finally Dr Pepper(pre ingredients change).

queenofthewild · 21/10/2022 16:34

I was quite fond of a glass of Bottlegreen sparking ginger and lemongrass.

Nothing like wine, but cool and refreshing.

Needhelp101 · 21/10/2022 16:34

The Koppaberg non-alcoholic pear cider is very good.

lennylion · 21/10/2022 16:35

Anything elderflower is a good substitute

toastofthetown · 21/10/2022 16:37

If you are open to fizzy, which from a
comment you might be, then a rock shandy is one of my favourite non alcoholic drinks. Equal parts soda water and lemonade (or tweak to your preference) with a few dashes angostura bitters. Not overly sweet and very refreshing. There’s trace alcohol from the bitters, but not enough for me to be concerned about.

The only thing I can of which isn’t sweet, fizzy or fruity (other than tea or coffee!) is a no-groni. I don’t have any recommendations for recipes or brands to buy at home, but it’s cold and not sweet so might be worth pursuing m.

Whiskey ;)

I felt so sick most of the time that even as a committed white wine drinker pre and post pregnancy, I wasn’t even vaguely tempted by wine or any of the non alcoholic substitutes until near my due date. Later in pregnancy I occasionally had a non-alcoholic beer - Becks Blue, Brooklyn Lager “Special Effects” and Brew Dog Nanny State were the best. Most alcohol free white and rosé are too cloying and fruity for me - they taste like what they are, sour grape juice.

I don’t really like any of those things. ☹️

Thanks for the suggestions, though. Also, my tastebuds are apparently going to go haywire over the next few months (according to everyone), so who knows? I might be gagging for a Dr Pepper by December!

Agree with this, it’s the only non alcoholic alternative that I enjoyed. I tended to drink it neat over ice.

The fever tree tonics and soda waters are also nice, I would add some garnishes to them and could almost imagine I was drinking a G&T.

Ooh, seen that, but never had it. Will definitely give it a go!

Is it very sweet? I’ve always thought it might be, but I have zero basis for this belief.

Freixient alcohol free fizz is surprisingly good. I happily drink it if I'm at parties and driving.

Alcohol free beers are pretty good on the whole now if you don't mind a beer.

Fizzy isn’t my usual wheelhouse, but these flavours sound right. Thank you.

I find a lot of non-alcoholic drinks just too sweet, but Schweppes Tonic with a dash of lime juice isn't bad.

Lemon barley.

In the winter - warm lemon barley.

Yes this is lovely. The red one. Think it's called Vibrante

greenhousegal · 21/10/2022 16:46

I'm not preggers but I don't drink. Someone made me a Lyre's Italian Spritz (non alcohol) during the Summer, with sparkling water, ice and orange slices in a big big wine glass. God it was gorgeous!

I currently feel great, but I’ve been assured that this won’t last. ☹️

Agree on the non-alcoholic wines. I’m sure there must be some lovely ones, but I’ve never had one that wasn’t quite unpleasant.
