To ask what wine drinkers switch to when pregnant?

IMissVino · 21/10/2022 16:24

I am pregnant with a very much wanted baby and over the moon about it.

It feels like a stupid thing to be thinking about, but a large glass of crisp cool white wine was one of the joys of Friday for me. If possible, I’d love to have some sort of substitute.

So, if anyone else is or has been in the same boat, would you please share your non-alcoholic beverages of choice? Nothing sweet, fruity or fizzy, please. Thank you!

Craving a snow ball I made a concoction of ambrosia custard, lime juice and lemonade ... i drank it for those who are adventurous 😂 Nosecco is lovely, as is the alcohol free gin and tonics I've tried. Lamb and Watt do a Hibiscus Tonic water thats nice enough without the gin

Whatever you fancy but avoid alcohol.

@Kellie45

uh yeh I think she knows that!

Is it very sweet? I’ve always thought it might be, but I have zero basis for this belief.

Not that I remember, it's got a kind of pear-drops tartness to it. I had a Mixed Fruits one yesterday and that was like drinking fizzy Ribena so not recommended!

Dailymash · 21/10/2022 18:32

Sainsburys do a lovely alcohol free sparkling wine for around £3 a bottle. I loved that as a treat when I was pregnant! Put a raspberry in and serve in a champagne flute. I tried a few ‘still’ wines but couldn’t get away with them. Too sickly sweet and not a good substitute for a chilled Sauvignon blanc.

Not wine but Heineken 0.0 is proper nice! I still drink it now if I’m out but don’t want a hangover.

By the way, if I could rewind, i wouldn't have started drinking again after pregnancy.

@Vikinga

why?

illiterato · 21/10/2022 19:10

Cawstons Rhubarb is quite sharp so not too cloying/ sweet and I also like the kombucha in the pink can that is in Tesco- think it’s pink lemonade flavour.

illiterato · 21/10/2022 19:14

@Namechanger355 im going to give the crodino a go- love aperol.

dentydown · 21/10/2022 19:18

Sainsburys do a full bodied red grape juice. In the chill section.

bigbeautifulmonster · 21/10/2022 19:19

I had non alcoholic wines.

I didn't like any reds but some whites and rose were really lovely. For me, having something in a wine glass was symbolic and helped me relax.

Squirrelvillage · 21/10/2022 19:20

I still had a nice, small glass of wine from time to time.

That's nteresting to know.
Does it also unblock drains when you pour it away?

I'm 30 weeks pregnant with DD2 and have loved drinking tonic water and ribena. Not too much to make it too sweet but just enough to take the edge off the bitter tonic 😅

Lcb123 · 21/10/2022 19:30

My friend said Oddbird wine is good. And I got her a really nice non alcoholic fizz from the Wine Society. Lyres do non alcoholic versions of a lot of spirits.

NotTodayPal · 21/10/2022 19:32

I’m gonna be that person…

A small glass of wine is absolutely fine…

Helpmeheal · 21/10/2022 19:33

I didn't switch to anything, just had a small glass

AgapanthusandAcers · 21/10/2022 19:35

I didn't bother but I agree that alcohol free options are better than I was pregnant 11 years ago.

Bizzyone · 21/10/2022 19:40

Third trimester here and still missing my Friday night wine 😅🙈

Have just tried ALL the non alcoholic drinks and fancy soft drinks I can find in the hope my brain will still see it as a treat lol... So maybe go crazy in the posher sections of drinks aisles?!

But rocking and counting down the days also works too 😅🍷

lightisnotwhite · 21/10/2022 19:45

Yes unfortunately nothing really to replace wine. Becks Blue is the best of the larger I think.
I also hate sickly carbonated drinks and juices. I did however tried a sea breeze zero this summer on holiday and it was nice enough to recreate at home ( I just did cranberry, grapefruit and crushed ice).

Fiddledeedeeee · 21/10/2022 19:47

I’ve found all the non alcoholic versions of wine/ Prosecco etc are horrible.

However the zero alcohol koppaberg ciders are really nice (I don’t drink cider usually)

Also Mr Fitzpatricks gooseberry and elderflower cordial (randomly found in the co op) with sparkling water is gorgeous!

PurBal · 21/10/2022 19:48

Sheppys alcohol free cider is the best non alcoholic substitute. There are one or two good beers: nanny state is one and I can’t remember the other (sorry). Wine doesn’t exist, it’s just disappointing. M&S mulled punch is a good mulled wine alternative at Christmas though.

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 21/10/2022 19:51

Marks do quite a good range of alcohol free wines and nosecco etc

toomuchlaundry · 21/10/2022 19:51

Going off wine was one of my first signs that I was pregnant!

VestaTilley · 21/10/2022 19:52

You may just find you don’t fancy alcohol - I was so ill, I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do less!

I drank squash, water, a couple of mugs of tea a day and occasionally a Coca Cola. My DH is a big fan of alcohol free lager, but I’ve not tried that. I did try ‘Nosecco’ but thought it was horrid, and I don’t like that Seedlip alcohol free fake gin either.

LondonQueen · 21/10/2022 19:52

Appetiser, I still drink it today if I'm driving!
