To ask what wine drinkers switch to when pregnant?

IMissVino · 21/10/2022 16:24

I am pregnant with a very much wanted baby and over the moon about it.

It feels like a stupid thing to be thinking about, but a large glass of crisp cool white wine was one of the joys of Friday for me. If possible, I’d love to have some sort of substitute.

So, if anyone else is or has been in the same boat, would you please share your non-alcoholic beverages of choice? Nothing sweet, fruity or fizzy, please. Thank you!

I drank water. Then discovered the joys of tomato juice with lemon juice, tabasco, ice and a celery stick. Drank and ate nothing else 6-12 weeks. And soy. Now a go to drink when driving/taking a break.

DC is now a tomato cocktail addict.

Good luck.

Seedlip non-alcoholic gin is lovely.

wishuponastar1988 · 21/10/2022 20:15

Aldi or m&s nosecco is very good. I actually did a bottomless brunch on nosecco when pregnant and polished a bottle off Grin

Youdoyoutoday · 21/10/2022 20:18

Soda water and fresh lime is my go to when pregnant or not drinking for lent, sober October, dry January or generally trying to convince myself I'm not an alcoholic 😃 It's free in pubs and not full of unnecessary calories.

Just recently discovered dash water, those are lovely.

showmethegin · 21/10/2022 20:21

Nothing came close for me! I drank mainly non alcoholic craft beer when pregnant.

I will say though if you get Nosecco or similar, add a dash of tonic water, takes the sweetness away and gives it a little bite

Palmtree9 · 21/10/2022 20:25

Personally I found Tesco's own non alcoholic white and rose nice, but the red was awful.

I used to have fruit flavoured fizzy waters...but I know you said no fizz!

The 0% koppabergs are actually surprisingly nice

ParadiseLaundry · 21/10/2022 20:44

When I was pregnant I had a non alcoholic ginger beer cocktail in a bar and it tasted so amazing and like it had actually alcohol in I checked 3 times at the bar that it was actually alcohol free! I found it good as it was strong and spicy and the sugar gives you a bit of a kick!

Snugglemonkey · 21/10/2022 20:57

I have tried lots of non alcoholic wines and found them all vile tbh. However, there are lots of good non alcoholic gins.

Snugglemonkey · 21/10/2022 20:59

Or if you are going fir beer, I think the alcohol free peroni is my favourite.

Badnewsoracle · 21/10/2022 21:36

Water. All the substitutes were really disappointing so I just saved my money!

And occasionally, I'd have half a small glass of red wine.

I’m teetotal, have been for a few years, and the #1 question my drinking friends ask me when trying to cut back is ‘can you recommend a good non alcoholic wine?’ Sadly my answer is no! I’ve never found one worth drinking and I don’t bother with any of them. Non-alcoholic fizz is ok when you need to pop a cork to celebrate something, everything else is bleurgh though.

I really second the recommendation for non-alcoholic bitters though! I haven’t tried the one recommended upthread (but I will
now), but I can recommend San Pelligrino Sanbitter which you can get from Ocado.

And you really really don’t have to worry about the alcohol content of non-alcoholic beer. There are dull labelling reasons why a lot of them have to be labelled 0.5% but most of them actually contain far less than that. And your body basically processes the alcohol faster than you can drink it. As someone else said, there’s about the same amount of alcohol in orange juice!

Craving a snow ball I made a concoction of ambrosia custard, lime juice and lemonade ... i drank it for those who are adventurous 😂 Nosecco is lovely, as is the alcohol free gin and tonics I've tried. Lamb and Watt do a Hibiscus Tonic water thats nice enough without the gin

Wait wait I need to know more about this non-alcoholic snowball experiment. Did it work?! I miss snowballs at Christmas!

Trace amounts of alcohol aren't an issue - something that's 0.5% ABV is about as alcoholic as fresh orange juice.

I'm a big fan of a nothing and tonic (plenty of ice, grapefruit/lime/lemon etc), or you can add bitters to them for a bit more pizzazz. I find a lot of the joy of alcohol is in the rituals (as long as the drink itself is nice once you drink it) so the more ritualistic the making of it is, the more it gives you that end of the week feeling. So for me that's the picking out of a really nice glass that I know I enjoy drinking from, the cracking of the ice cube tray, picking a couple of nice garnishes, maybe rosemary and grapefruit, or pink peppercorns and some frozen raspberries or whatever, followed by the crack of the can and sitting down to enjoy it.

That's good to know. I bought sainsburys non alcoholic Prosecco and just noticed its 0.05% so didn't know if I could drink it pregnant?

londonrach · 21/10/2022 21:59

I put water in the fridge so crisp and cool and then roses lime juice and the cool water and ice cubes....tbh though didn't really want wine. Think I also had alot of sloyers (that grown up fizzy drink...sorry can't spell it... elderflower etc)

IMissVino · 21/10/2022 22:07

Update, in case anyone’s interested!

I tried a non alcoholic beer - Big Drop Uptime Craft Lager. It tasted very beery and I didn’t hate it.

I tried a Gordon’s 0% alcohol with some Fevertree. It’s rather lovely.

Wait wait I need to know more about this non-alcoholic snowball experiment. Did it work?! I miss snowballs at Christmas!

In the US they are big on non-alcoholic eggnog, so I am planning to purchase some from Amazon, to mix with lemonade for a Christmas snowball. Haven’t tried it yet though, and now wondering if custard would be just as good…

Florin · 22/10/2022 06:11

Ginger cordial with tonic is lovely in a big gin glass with lots of ice. The spice in ginger gives it that kick like gin would.

BlindMedusa · 22/10/2022 08:06

@FirewomanSam It worked, it hit the spot and filled the void of a Snowball. It got me thinking of using sprite instead of lime juice (as it's already lemon and lime flavoured) and lemonade or trying cream soda instead of the lemonade but I used what was at hand 😂

ginandoreos · 22/10/2022 08:12

Just had my second baby and really enjoyed this:

www.bolledrinks.com

Really refreshing but no weird after taste. Have not like any other non-alcoholic 'wines'.

Also enjoyed using my soda stream with a variety of cordials and fresh fruit to pretend I was drinking cocktails!

Good luck with everything xxx

Greengagesnfennel · 22/10/2022 20:28

No alcohol leffe is nice. So is citra ipa by brew drop co. 0%. And belvoir ginger cordial with tonic water is lovely and spicy and bitter (but is fizzy). Also like hot water with ginger & lemon slices and honey

JonahAndTheSnail · 22/10/2022 22:31

McGuigans zero is the nicest AF wine I've found, it's not overally sweet and has that slight dry quality that stops it tasting like fruit juice.
