AIBU?
Multi millionaire son of an admiral
Cosmos123 · 17/10/2022 13:32
Is Jeremy Hunt.
He has not the slightest comprehension of how hard ordinary people's lives are.
We need to get rid of them.QUICK
Am I being unreasonable?

You don't have to have personal experience of something to be good at your job.

Exactly my point.
Pretty sure my anaesthetist had never had an epidural...
Cosmos123 · 17/10/2022 13:42
It is about privilege with unimaginable wealth telling ordinary people we have to tighten our belts again and again.
There is no more to give.
We are broken and poor.
It has to stop.
Cosmos123 · 17/10/2022 13:44
The ones who have experienced hardship usually have more empathy towards those who don't have.

Speak for yourself. Not everyone is broken

I disagree with this actually.
Some that have experienced hardship may have the opinion that 'if I can get myself out of a bad situation, they can too'.
You're over generalising and sound very immature.
CaptainThe95thRifles · 17/10/2022 13:46
I'm not sure being the son of an admiral is a particular indicator of his unsuitability for the job.
I mean, he is unsuitable, I'm just not sure why you're leading with that, instead of his track history of incompetence and moral bankruptcy.

How do you know he hasn't.
My grandfather in law was a high ranking naval officer. For much of his career the pay was low and the impact on family life huge. He was moved around load, naval family accommodation wasn't that plush and it wasn't all roses.
You don't start out as an admiral.
Dotjones · 17/10/2022 13:50
Well you wouldn't want Labour in then, Sir Kier is worth several million.
DottieGinger · 17/10/2022 14:09
I’d rather the tories were out but he’s actually an okay choice has less extreme right wing views than the rest of the cabinet. Although right wing views nonetheless.
Byfleet · 17/10/2022 14:18
I am a socialist (not just a Labour voter) and I disagree with you OP. In fact I think your reasoning is very shallow and unsophisticated and as others have pointed out, quite immature.
Inequality is the number one problem this country urgently has to deal with and I would guess that a large number of people on MN, especially those around my age have no idea how unequal our society has become in recent years, especially in comparison to other countries. BUT this is a systemic problem, it is not the fault of individuals. I always think this in relation to the late Queen Elizabeth. Despite what she represented she was a decent person as an individual (as Tony Ben-the aristocrat socialist also used to point out).
Hate the system, not the individual.
HRTQueen · 17/10/2022 14:25
How old are you op?
There are many reasons I do not want Hunt in a position of power coming from a privileged background isn’t one of them.
did you also complain about Corbyn’s privileged childhood ?
pompomdaisy · 17/10/2022 14:49
I'm a Labour voter but even I recognise that you are talking bollocks op!

Well you wouldn't want Labour in then, Sir Kier is worth several million.
Nor indeed Jeremy Corbyn who is worth £3 million pounds and who was brought up Yew Tree Manor, a (17th manor house in Shropshire.
CredibilityProblem · 17/10/2022 15:38
There's a lot wrong with Jeremy Hunt, but the fact that he's from a family of landed gentry doesn't even make the top ten.
OneDayAtATimePlease · 17/10/2022 15:47
I can't believe I'm defending Jeremy Hunt...but here we go.
Judge people on their actions/deeds rather than who their parents were and the opportunities they were given.
I think Jeremy Hunt is a class A dick head because his actions as an MP have given me that impression, not because he was raised by a wealthy family.
As chancellor he hasn't fucked up yet. He's been handled a chalice so poisonous that just touching it is a political death...this might be the one thing he can do well - the markets both internal and international will decide that. He's made less terrible decisions than his predecessor in the same time frame.
Frankly, what happens to the average person has never been a Tory concern so short of a general election that was never going to change.
mumda · 17/10/2022 15:55
The energy support scheme stopping in April is going to need some serious work on it to make it not hurt badly for the majority of people.
It was completely and utterly insane to do AND to not do it was equally insane.
We need energy. We have to take control of energy production. Perhaps by inventing a company for Britain to produce energy and get it into the grid.
We need to reduce reliance on gas. But we need to do so many things to achieve this it's not going to be cheap. Sensible insulation across the board would be a start. Energy efficient devices. Educating the public about how to use less energy.
Inflation has not been kept under control by the Bank of England. That should have been a huge red flag to the rest of the planet - lowest interest rates ever for a prolonged length of time was also insane.
It's very much a radioactive toxic poisoned chalice at the moment.
RIPQueen · 17/10/2022 16:06
I thought he gave a pretty good account of himself on the interview I watched yesterday. Seems to have realised they need to be focusing more on those in need.
certainly can’t be worse than Clusterfuck Lizz Truss.
Asperia · 17/10/2022 16:10
He may be brilliant or rubbish at his job but that won't depend on either of the factors you state here.
